If MSNBC execs were hoping the animosity among Christian conservatives and their sympathizers towards Olbermann might simmer down anytime soon, it doesn't appear Olby's allies will facilitate it. Under the header, Keith Olbermann, you go girl!, Washington Blade News Editor Ken Sain posted in that paper's blog on Monday a blurb complementing Olby, saying that he "has been doing the gay community a great favor." (unlike the "favor" he's doing for his bosses at MSNBC, I would venture.) WashingtonBlade.com describes itself as the "weekly news source for Washington's large and visible Gay community."
Excerpting a portion of one of Olby's blog posts that helped ignite the backlash, Sain copied:
More importantly, at some point, some of these people are going to wake up to find that the great secular assault they see on their children was, in fact, a bogeyman created to hide their own bad parenting. If they can't convince their own kids of the appropriateness of their religion and values, then the religion, the values, or the convincing, must not have been very good. Ask my folks if I was an easy sell---yet most of my tenets turn out to have been their tenets---not my teachers', not television's, not the secular world's.
Keith, if pretentiousness and haughty conceit were among the tenets of your parents, then perhaps it was a much easier "sell" than you think! What if the shoe were on the other foot, Keith? What if Christian conservatives had covertly (i.e. without informing you) used popular cartoon characters to instill in YOUR children a belief in Christ and abstinence from premarital sex?! And then when you complained that your children adopted the Christian lifestyle against your wishes, you were told that you're creating a "bogeyman" in order to "hide your own bad parenting", and that "if you can't convince your own kids of the appropriateness of your secular philosophy and values, then the philosophy, the values, or the convincing, must not have been very good." (i.e. it couldn't overcome the counter programming from the mainstream Christian media).
MSNBC execs might have read with envy Sain's closing line:
It's always nice to watch a cat fight when you're not actually in the middle of it.
As if to make this week even harder to bear for the aforementioned gray suits, Olby's tin-foil hat supporters weighed in Monday night with this entry by Justin Raimondo on AntiWar.com.
Reading this post reminds one of the Seinfeld episode (#86 "The Opposite") in which George succeeds by doing the opposite of what is normally approved and accepted. That is the only way to make sense when reading this post. Consider it the opposite of what Johnny Dollar wrote in his Countdown Guide on Monday. For example, Raimondo considered it a virtue(!) that Olby reported a rumor that people in Tikrit who refrained from voting will be penalized by the government. Also consider his 'opposite' take---from that of David Frum and Steve Emerson---on the successful election and what it portends for Iraqis. And of course, Raimondo applauded KO's ridiculing of the Christian conservative complaint emails. It's doubtful rumor-monger Keith bothered to verify that the email he read on air was genuine, and did not come from pranksters on the political left.
After exclaiming, "Go, Keith, go!" after seeing Keith advance all the agenda items of this far left wing nut, Raimondo ended his post by wondering---ironically---the same thing Olbermannwatch is wondering about the gray suits at MSNBC:
"Hmmmm... I wonder how long they'll let him get away with it.
