I sent an e-mail up to Marist College today and got an e-mail back...
This is the statement President Dennis Murray made on the Olbermann-O'Reilly feud:
Tim Massie
Chief Public Affairs Officer
Marist College
Poughkeepsie, NY
Sounds like Keith Olbermann was splitting hairs to make a point that is factually incorrect. Mike Malet, a member of the football staff in 1970, confirmed that Bill O'Reilly did indeed win the national punting title for his division in his senior year. Mr. Olbermann is making a trivial distinction to detract from a record that any athlete would be proud to list among his accomplishments.
Dennis J. Murray
President
Marist College
Which DIVISION was it? What conference? Who else was in the division? Who was the coach?
C'mon... If the school didn't play varsity football until 1978, and O'Reilly played in 1971, what league, conference or division did O'Reilly play in?
And do you think that little Marist College would send out a press release that would contradict O'Reilly, who is probably one of the more affluent alumni donors?
Grow up. O'Reilly lied at worst, and exaggerated at best.
J,
As an OlbyLoon I don't expect YOU are interest in truth, accuracy or even reality. But for others reading this post here is a little dose of reality.
For J...if you look at the post directly below the one where you commented you can get your answer - in spades.
It's a long post with lots of documentation but the short version is that O'Reilly played for Marist which was a member of the National Club Football Association. The NCFA was a national college football organization. 125 colleges from all over the United States were members of the NCFA. I could not find a detailed history of the NCFA on the web but there is no doubt that O'Reilly was a punter and kicker for Marist, that the NCFA was a real college football league and that O'Reilly was a top punter in the NCFA.
The fact is that both Olbermann and O'Reilly are wrong BY KEITH'S DEFINITION.
There were NO "divisions" in college football like there are today because the NCAA did not even create Divsion I, II and III until 1973 - two years after O'Reilly graduated from Marist. O'Reilly is not wrong if you accept the dictionary definition of "division" as it refers to competitive sports. The NCFA was a "division" of college football in that it had certain requirements regarding level of financial support, scholarships, etc. Many of the same standards that applied to the NCFA apply today to NCAA Divsion III football.
As far as Marist issuing a press release, you are piling assumption onto assumption - that O'Reilly is a donor to the school, that he is a big donor, that the president of Marist is a liar and so on. Now I understand your affection for Keith Olbermann. Why deal in facts when you can deal in biased assumptions and conspiracy theories.
Olbermann himself cites the Marist Football Media Guide which refers to the NCFA as a "national" organization. Olbermann admits Keith was the top punter with a 41.4 average.
This is not about football. It is about Keith's anger and envy. You can read all about it the long post.
