OLBYWATCH GUIDE: Presenting the many faces of Keith Olbermann, in his own words:
OLBY, THE INVESTIGATIVE SLEUTH:
Something smells funny to me about this Newsweek apology, then retraction.
OLBY, THE IMPARTIAL REPORTER:
Newsweek quotes a government source on this, as you mentioned, then gets blasted by the White House. Newsweek apologies but won't retract. Then Scott McClellan makes himself available to the networks for interviews--a rare occurence--in which he blasts Newsweek even further. And then late this afternoon Newsweek retracts. Are these events interrelated, or am I a victim of my own favorite logical fallacy here?
OLBY, THE RELENTLESS FACT-CHECKER
How do you feel if you're Gen Meyers tonight, or if you're Gen Eikenberry in Jalalabad, and you said the Afghan riots were not caused by the Newsweek story and today the White House said yes they were...
Note: KO repeatedly brings up these early assessments that didn't connect the riots to the Newsweek story, but ignores more recent reports:
Thousands of Muslims gathered in Pakistan's main cities yesterday after sermons in mosques denouncing the desecration..."The Holy Koran was defiled by the dirtiest of hands, by American hands," a protester shouted as others burnt American and Israeli flags.
OLBY, THE NON-PARTISAN INTERVIEWER:
[talking to Rep Jane Slaughter about charges that intel was "fixed" to support the Iraq War...]
Two devil's advocate questions...the second devil's advocate question...
When was the last time KO ever apologized for a question to a Republican or conservative by going out his way to note that he was being a "devil's advocate"?
Johnny,
I admit I've missed some episodes of Countdown, but when has its guest list included a Republican and/or a conservative ALONE who has there to defend the administration or Republicans in general against some charge by Democrats or liberals?
Generally, any conservative defending the administration or defending conservatism is balanced by someone with an opposing view. UNLESS that Repubican/conservative is voicing some criticism of the party, administration policy, or other conservatives.
Democrats, on the other hand, are free to appear and make charges, without a Republican added for balance.
But I don't strain my brain anymore wondering how Keith can complain and insult Fox News and call it a conservative vehicle and then make snide remarks about Bush and other conservatives, run the most unflattering still photographs of Bush it can find, and air any leftwing blog conspiracy theory it comes across.
This sort of cognitive dissonance comes from the sort of elitism that most of his collegues have had to abandon in order to compete with Fox and alternative voices in the new media.
I'll never forget Olbermann saying that rightwing critism of he and his show came from an intolerant folks who wanted to control him and the show's content. As though conservatives were demanding he post the Ten Commandments on his set and have only conservatives as guests.
The truth is, there is NO Fox News show that is as routinely biased and one-sided as Countdown.
Here, here.
Fox is horrid.
The whole network is like one big pile of right-wing propaganda.
If I had a nickel for everytime they lied and or spun crap in Bush's favor, I'd be rich enough to get a Bush tax cut.
But, if they are making fun of Bush, good. Somehow, I doubt they are because on the very, very rare occasions I've seen them, they sound like the rabid wingnuts they always have.
