Wednesday night's Countdown was almost totally devoted to the story that got such short shrift the tonight before: the coal miners. Olbermann covered the latest developments, areas of possible wrongdoing, and the role of the media (for a different perspective on this last, one of Olby's growing number of nemeses has some thoughts). The upside to all this was that Keith acted like something resembling a journalist. No oddball videos, no puppets, no mug shots, no worst people.
There was one segment to cover all the other news. This included the latest on Jack Abramoff, where Olby, eager to inflate what is already a major story to even greater heights, stated:
The Wall Street Journal reporting today that the Republican lobbyist has information that could implicate 60 lawmakers.
In fact, the WSJ did not report that Abramoff had such information, only that he claims to have it. A small but meaningful distinction, reminding us that, even when KO tries to behave, the spin never really comes to a complete stop.
Excuse me, but Abramoff struck a plea deal. The government at least thinks he has information or they never would have let him agreed to name names now would they? So how is that an error on Olbermann's part exactly?
According to the government there are 20 persons potentially under investigation. Abramoff himself claims he can implicate 60 people, but there is a difference between saying he HAS information against 60 people, versus he CLAIMS TO HAVE information against 60 people.
Oh Johnny,
There you go again with your word play. Whether he leaves out a little or a lot of a story, Keith never intends to mislead. He may get fifty percent of the story wrong and distort the rest, but that's part of the business (just ask Mary Mapes and Gunga Dan).
I can't believe Keith allowed his entire show to focus on the mine disaster. Tonight will be a HUGE must-miss TV session as the bells and whistles come out of the boxes!
By the way, I'm sure 24 hour cable news shows were not the primary cause of confusion during the mine disaster as they continiuously broadcast live from the site with lights and cameras on hyperdrive, talking to anyone with a pie-hole. I know if I'm in a crisis situation I want Rita Cosby, Anderson Cooper and Geraldo running around like mental patients with microphones strapped to their heads. That's the only way the truth will be told!
So let's recap recent journalistic triumphs via cable news:
KATRINA: What the networks said: "Everone is being killed, drowned and raped in the Superdome, 10,000 dead, minorities killed in excess, Convention Center filled with injured, dead and raped"
The truth: about 1000 dead, almost all were sick and old people, Convention Center and Superdome crimes a myth.
MINE DISASTER: What the networks said: "Everybody is alive -- Hurray!"
The truth: Everybody is dead
How much more obvious does it have to be? Idiots with cameras and microphones are not reliable sources of information. Idiots with pencils and paper are bad too, but it takes them longer to misinform.
Question: Why didn't these miners have a way of communicating with the surface? Do you mean to tell me that the companies are too cheap or stupid to give these guys a decent communication system in the mine? I know it is underground, but so the F what? Wires can be run underground.
Something tells me (maybe it's the Olby in me constructing reality from internal stimuli) that mining in West Virginia hasn't changed much since the 1950's.
A quick search of other coal mining operations yields:

Excerpt:
SAFETY ASPECTS
On a personal level, all underground miners are equipped with oxygen self-rescuers and each operator can be contacted in case of emergency through a receiver connected to the caplamp battery.
Hmm...just found the site...and OMG, Johnny Dollar moonlights on here. how pathetic is that. Is JD fair and balanced like his beloved FNC? I think NOT!!!
You can always tell the character of a person by their enemies.
Johnny, you're grade A.
