COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN" (8:00-9:00 P.M. ET)
Host: Keith Olbermann
Topics/Guests:
POLITICS AND SCANDALS: Craig Crawford, Congressional Weekly
SCANDAL WATCH: Ken Silverstein, Harper's Magazine
"Numb3rs Game"
We all use math every day: to forecast the weather, to tell time. But the infamous, deplorable Keith Olbermann uses numbers in a more sinister fashion. Wait, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Tuesday's Countdown began with KO trumpeting a huge story--Rupert Murdoch raising money for Hillary Clinton:
A prospect no less unexpected than a warm and fuzzy friendship between Sen Clinton's husband and the first President Bush...
This comes as Big News to Olby, despite the fact that Murdoch contributed $50,000 to an Al Gore fundraiser in 2000, and also gave money to John Kerry and Ted Kennedy. But if a "journalist" doesn't even know who is in the President's cabinet, how can we expect him to be knowledgeable about anything else? Apropos of nothing all, Krazy Keith tossed in another stinkbomb:
Far easier to imagine, parallels between the current Bush Presidency and that of Richard Nixon.
This was to introduce guest Craig Crawford, and Olbermann's Brain was chuckling before the first words came out of his mouth. They discussed new (bad) poll numbers, which Brain said "reminds me of Jimmy Carter's meltdown". He went on to describe the Murdoch news as "weird", calling it "political cross-dressing" (a phrase that Pat Buchanan once used and was all but crucified for doing so). There was also talk of Kathryn Harris in Florida: KO said she is in "desperate housewives mode".
Then it was time for the (Republican) Scandal Watch: Duke Cunningham, Dusty Foggo, and, by insinuation, Porter Goss. After we hammered Keith for crediting a story to "Harper's Magazine" when it was actually from a blog by one of their writers, tonight he at least didn't use that trick. He had the blogger on, Ken Silverstein, to chat up the "deep ties" between all these people. Foggo has "links" to Wilkes, who has "links" to "Nine Fingers", and so on. Silverstein, master of the unsubstantiated rumor, did the Guilt by Association bit to concoct a "link" between Goss and the Duke Cunningham investigation, using libel protection phrases like "they're hearing", "apparently", "I think", and "there have been suggestions".
Ethics was the #4 story. Is this when we learn about Rep Mollohan (D), raking in big money from dubious sources and being investigated by the feds? Silly rabbit! It's Rick Santorum (R), who rode a plane owned by Bell South and later reimbursed them. A recycled NBC report followed, which dealt with Sen Allen (R), who also took corporate plane rides and reimbursed them for first-class airfare. Guess what? It's all entirely legal! Why bother with Rep Jefferson (D), who stands accused of taking bribes, when you can focus in on Allen and five other Republicans (with a brief mention of Harry Reid) for not breaking the law?
After oddball, KO got to his much-hyped segment on Bill O'Reilly. Yes, it's O'Reilly Attack #86, as Keith slammed Bill for saying his ratings were up over the same month last year on the nights he anchored The Factor. "You can't just count the nights you're on", sneered Olby. And on and on he went, making oh-so-hip comments, claiming that O'Reilly was "not doing well" in the ratings (at over 2 million viewers). The Laughing Stagehand cackled at references to loofahs, and then came another Olbermann fiction:
The audience for the competition--that would be us--was up by a third from last April.
It's time for another Olbermann Reality Check. Here's the truth:
Coundtown (April 2006): 419,000Countdown (April 2005): 339,000
If the 2006 audience were up "by a third", it would have reached 452,000 viewers: Olby invented 33,000 nonexistent viewers out of whole cloth! (Using the true numbers, at this rate KO will reach O'Reilly's 2,000,000 viewers some time around April of 2030.) This kind of deception is what you can expect when a so-called "journalist" loathes the people he is "reporting" on--everything he says is suspect when it is funnelled through the biases of pathological hate.
After this smear, Olby swerved The Hour of Spin into its nightly sleaze and fluff: strip tease clubs, American Idol, Brittney Spears, UFOs, and Cruise News! All the better to avoid General McCaffrey's report, or those witnesses the Libby defense team has announced.
The "worst person" was Alfonso Jackson (R), for cancelling a contract "because of a bidder's personal political belief" (he didn't like Bush). This story exploded on all the blue blogs, and naturally Krazy Keith picked it up. But he didn't mention any details on the bidder, the nature of the contact, or anything else. This may just be because, according to the Washington Post, Mr Jackson explained that the "story" was just that: a hypothetical story told to illustrate the nature of cut-throat politics. Needless to say, KO left that part out. Like we said: every sentence, phrase, and word fragment that Olby regurgitates is immediately suspect.
And that's The Hour of Spin for this, the 81st day of the Keith Olbermann CoverUp.
I realize O'Reilly doesn't want to give publicity to Olbermann, but do you think O'Reilly should do at least a segment on him?
NO!!!!!!!!!
The fact that O'Reilly responded once or twice to Olbermann's attacks (Johnny Dollar can give us the exact count) has now enabled the print media to categorize this conflict as a "feud".
Most of O'Reilly's viewers have probably never even heard of KO, and would rather O'Reilly keep after the child predators, corrupt politicians and other societal miscreants than to engage in this petty spat. And "petty" is the correct word for KO's actions.
This lie that Murdoch is a "conservative" simply because he owns Fox News needs to die. He owns a lot of other things as well. He contributes to Democrats frequently. Fox is conservative because Murdoch is smart and knows that conservatives wanted their own news channel, feeling alienated from the other major networks. It's called "capitalism."
Actually, Alphonso keeps changing his story as the heat is turned up.
From Think Progress
In other words, his spokesman claims that Jackson fabricated a long and detailed exchange (excerpt: He said, I have a problem with your president. I said, What do you mean?He said, I dont like President Bush.) with a CEO that doesnt actually exist, about a process he isnt actually involved with.
Two points:
1) That excuse isnt just difficult to swallow it also contradicts the spokespersons first response in which she indicated Jackson was referring to a real contract: On May 3, Tucker told the Business Journal that the contract Jackson was referring to in Dallas was an advertising contract with a minority publication, though she could not provide the contracts value. It looks like Jackson is changing his story as criticism builds.
2) Bidding for a government contract isnt asking for money. Its not Alphonso Jacksons money to give away to his buddies. It is the taxpayers money. It should go to whoever can do the best job, regardless of their political views.
1. No, Jackson said in his remarks that it was an advertising contract. When asked for comment, Tucker said there was no record of it, and that's why she couldn't provide the contract's value.
2. Absolutely agree on this point.
3. Overlooked in an effort to distract attention from the subject of this site, the infamous Keith Olbermann, is the fact that Keith only reported HALF the story, and left out the other half, to make it sound as EEEEVIL as possible. That's shoddy journalism, if it can be called journalism at all.
Olbermann discussed UFO's. There's nothing needed to be said about this clown anymore!
Olbermann discussed UFO's. There's nothing needed to be said about this clown anymore!
Will the last one leaving the building at Fox news, please turn out the lights?
Your complaint of KO rounding off numbers seems pretty petty to me. Precisely the thing you accuse KO of doing.
Anywho, it looks like Fox is hemorrhaging viewers in the 25-54 age range and the old farts who are their base will eventually die off so KO will eventually be correct.

FNC's 25-54 Prime "Downward Spiral"
April '05 marks "the sixth consecutive month where FNC declined versus prior month in M-F, primetime P25-54 (every month since Nov '04)," CNN's press release says. The 25-54 demo is coveted by advertisers. One insider called it a "downward spiral." FNC still has more demo viewers than CNN, though (443k vs. 304k in April). Here are FNC's month-by-month weekday primetime averages in the 25-54 demographic:
Oct. 04: 1,074,000 / Nov. 04: 891,000 / Dec. 04: 568,000 / Jan. 05: 564,000 / Feb. 05: 520,000 / March 05: 498,000 / April 05: 445,000
> Also: In April 2005, FNC's weekday primetime demo average decreased 25% compared to the year-ago, while CNN increased 27%.

1)I don't like either of them but would someone tell me why being obviously #1 in any way one looks at the ratings O.R. would even mention ratings. If he did then Olberman would have had another 5 minutes to fill with alien stories.
2) I predict NBC will force Olberman to quit the fake "special report".It will happen before Olberman is cancelled or simultaneously
Maybe the reason the show is called countdown is because Keith Olbermann is waiting to get an exclusive Alien interview!
What do "we" care about ratings? None of us work for Fox News or MSNBC. I enjoy Olbermann and would even if I were the only one watching. And if O'Reilly had more viewers than "The Day After", I still wouldn't love his show.
I find KO's attacks on O'Reilly gratuitous and funny. I like that he's punching above his class.
"I like that he's punching above his class."
In every sense...
"Punching" is such an appropriate term. Olbermann is assaulting people for his own pathological reasons, and "Anonymous" is a big enough jerk to like it. Transplant these Olby fans to Iran and they are stoning people in the town square.
Olbermann was LAST in the ratings for an entire week, and ended with 309,000 viewers. That is horrible. The odds of walking into a house in the USA and seeing Olby on the TV are 1:1000. The odds of dying in a fire over a lifetime are 1:1000 (http://www.livescience.com/forcesofnature/050106_odds_of_dying.html). The odds that a lifetime viewer of Olby will set himself on fire are 1:10
I think it's a legitimate quesiton to ask if Opie is the most disgraceful journalist to ever be employed by NBC news - and he is certainly making tyhe credibility of all others at NBC suspect. Opie has a crystal clear and concise agenda, propoganda - which is fine except he and NBC are portraying his act under the guise of journalism. I mean - if his program passes the smell test at NBC News - you have you have to wonder what other ethical lines they deem fit to defy and compromise. His propoganda must be OK'd and condoned by the higher ups - the news execs -and that is troubling. So much for Brokaw's credibility
The GE stockholders are mad as hell
Meltdown's in last and the ads won't sell
NBC's a big joke
For employing a bloke
Whose ethics emit a bad smell
WASHINGTON -- On Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. Capitol, Distinguished Service Awards will be bestowed upon Vice President Dick Cheney and former CIA Director Porter Goss, two former House members selected by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL).

kind of like giving the three losers who screwed the pooch in Iraq the medal of freedom: Franks, Tenet, and Bremer.
The network is called NBC
It’s run by the goons at GE
If the propaganda it spews
Is called Nightly News
Then Countdown defines insanity

I'm a JERK because I enjoy one giant well-paid ego going after another one?
He's picking on Bill O'Reilly not an orphan, for crying out loud. Get a grip.
Anonymous, try a fake name on for size for God's sake.
As for Olby, he "punches" anyone and everyone. He attacked Lloyd Grove's young assistant and an innocent family that runs a "natural" burial service for example, not to mention his attacks on various other nobodies with no ability to fight back. Of course he also "punches" anyone with an (R) after his or her name. All the jerk does is attack people. That you enjoy that proves you are an a--hole.
Yo, Olby-hating nutjobs. Countdown is one of MSNBC`s hit shows. Get it? Olbermann is one of their stars. His ratings are going up. As opposed to O`Reilly`s ratings, which are going down.
You can rant and rave all you want about KO`s `low` ratings in comparison to OR`s, but you are clueless about how the industry actually works and why MSNBC is thrilled about Countdown. To be a successful show, with profitable ad revenues, KO doesn`t have to beat BO, or even do one fourth of his ratings.
And blah blah blah about how it`s not a news snow ... that it`s biased ... that KO hates BO ... that KO hates Bush. All useless yammering. The 65% who oppose Bush have come to realize the truth that Bush is a liar, and they`ve realized that the truth ain`t at Fox, it`s at Countdown. The show`s a success, and Keith`s a huge success. Bill`s on the way out, same as the crooks in the White House, same as the republican majority, same as the incompetants who cooked up Iraq and sold it to you morons like soap flakes -- they`ve all become the laughing stock they deserve to be, and that`s just how you all will be remembered.
"All the jerk does is attack people. That you enjoy that proves you are an a--hole."
So, I take it you don't watch Bill O'Reilly, either. I'm with you, pal. Let's petition to have James Lipton replace both men.
"To be a successful show, with profitable ad revenues, KO doesn`t have to beat BO, or even do one fourth of his ratings."
It looks like KO fans have settled for 2nd place, or first loser.
Actually, it's like 4th placee, or third loser.
I stand corrected.
"Yo, Olby-hating nutjobs. Countdown is one of MSNBC`s hit shows. Get it? Olbermann is one of their stars"
I don't hate Opie at all. I watch just to see the desperation - kind of like a reality TV. He is to journalism what Tonya Harding was to figure skating and OJ was to Hertz. Tonya had her fans too. It's just NBC talks out of one side of their mouth about "journalisitc integrity" then Opie comes flowing out the other side. It's all one mouth- with Russert in there, Brokaw a part of the "family" and Opie. If NBC lets him cackle - then they must approve of what he does, if they approve of what he does then .....well then they're Tonya Harding like
`I watch just to see the desperation`
`desperation` -- that`s a laugh. `having the time of his life` is more like it.
and why not? what better way to enjoy life than to be at the top of your game and help expose the devious liars and crooks the residents of OW so ignorantly support. that`s why your boyish, moron puppet has a thirty-something approval rating, numbskull. because the truth of his lies and incompetance, corruption and cronyism, is finally sinking in for the American public.
`Time`s glory is to ... unmask falsehood and bring truth to light ... To wrong the wronger till he render right.` - Shakespeare
Olbermann talks about UFO's. Nuff said!
I think that Olbecmonblowme secretly has the hots for O'Reilly. Why else would he do some many stories on him? I'm sure that Michael Musta must be getting very jealous by now.
Duke Cunningham writes:
`Time`s glory is to ... unmask falsehood and bring truth to light ... To wrong the wronger till he render right.` - Shakespeare
I like this quote. Too bad it has nothing to do with what your Orange Boy Olby ("OBO")stands for. To expose falsehoods and bring truth to light, you have to present all sides of the story and be willing to have your own views challenged to show that these views can withstand scrutiny. Does OBO do this? Well, even you know that answer to that one, Duke.
This quote is more apropos of the clear thinkers who post on this site (not the moonbats and you know who you are). Special mention goes out to Johnny Dollar and his tireless efforts to report on each MeltDown show and "bring truth to light" regarding the lies, distortions and overall creepiness of Orange Boy's train wreck of a show.
Spewing his bile quite freely
Watching Olby was making me sleepy
He's last in his slot
'Cause his content is rot
And often I find it quite creepy
I think there's no point in dicussing this nut anymore.
He talks about UFO's! That says it all!
Meltdown’s in the eight o’clock slot
Intelligent writing it’s not
Sophomoric at best
More strip clubs, more chest!
Does a child run Keith’s looney lot?
I think it's quite revealing our boy, Mr. SprayCanTanMan's pathological obsession with both Tom Cruise and Bill O
Perhaps all these years SprayCanTanMan has played for the same team?
Joseph Goebbels would be proud
`This quote is more apropos of the clear thinkers who post on this site`
Ha! yeah, right. the resident `clear thinkers` here at WatchOlbermann are the same clear thinkers who brought you WMDs, Iraq, rendition, Abu Ghraib, torture, 20000 military casualties, FEMA, warrantless spying, Abramoff, Cunningham, Diebold, and the largest federal deficit in history, shit-for-brains.
These are the truths brought to light on Countdown. You just don`t like the truth it illuminates.
Well I'm not sure when I brought anyone WNDs, but I do admit to being a clear thinker. At least I don't take a 22% increase, and claim that proves my ratings are "up a third". Us clear thinkers have a technical term for that: it's a lie.
For as much time as Olberman spends bashing O'Reilly, he may as well establish a permanent segment on his show that is devoted to it. I'm not a big O'Reilly fan either. I used to watch the Factor a lot in the past, but I think the format has gotten tired and he seems to cover the same topics repeatedly. The show has probably run its course, but it will be around for a while because it still commands high ratings. I don't see Countdown ever taking off, because it too has very little refreshing content to offer. Both shows make the mistake of devoting too much time to stories that are mostly media driven and have little to no impact on our daily lives. Examples: the Duke rape case, Natalie Holloway, Lacey Peterson, and general entertainment fluff (most recently Tom Cruise related stories).
Olberman may fashion himself as a refreshing alternative to O'Reilly but what does he really offer? If he's just a left wing/younger/hipper answer to O'Reilly then thats hardly a paradigm shift; rather, its simply a recycled spinoff. Its also an interesting paradox that he seems to regard O'Reilly as a laughable amateur (a la Ted Baxter), yet he devotes so much time and attention to him. If the guy is that much of a joke why bother scrutinizing every word he says? Its like a salesman who's trying to convince me that his product is better by constantly bashing his competitor's products, yet never demonstrating why his product is superior. A show like "60 Minutes" for instance, is probably vastly superior to both the Factor and Countdown. They seem to be a lot more concerned with putting together a quality program than bashing other news outlets.

I watch Keith every nite and have never heard him tell a guest to SHUP UP!!! unlike BOR who does and says he doesn't.
Factory Queen, why on earth would you tell someone who you're in lockstep ideologically ( all of Krazy Keith's guests ) with those whom you have on your pathetic show. Good God woman, think before you post!
It seems I didn't take my own advice and pulled a factoryqueen myself. Here it goes. The more people Bill O'Reilly has on his show that disagree with him, the better the chances are that a leftist who is getting destroyed by Bill will attempt to talk over him, aka filibuster. Such people deserve to be slapped around with a well timed " shut up." Don't you haveto have some opposing person on your show to actually say shut up? And Keith telling David Shuster in the MSNBC locker room group shower to shut up after he says that he's got the best show on cable tv doesn't count.
Easy there Porter Goss, there's no reason to fly off and call people Olbermann for brains. Let's show some class.
You think are so goddamn smart, right- winger jackasses, the avarage age of you guys is 74.5 years. Ours got raised to 30.5 years. It means you have no balls like we do! Keith is a resl journalist unlike your precious O' Reilly who sells lies and praises Bush and his band of freaks! Go to hell, righties!
Another future commencement speaker at the New School!
Doesn't Sara's post mean that for every 35 year old like me their is a 114 year old out there? Damn that's a lot.
BTW Sara, if the average age of a liberal is 30.5 that means about half of you can't vote. If you mean the average age of KO watchers, the age according to KO himself is more like 59.9.
