Jeff Jarvis posted this question: If you had a network...:
I'd be interested to hear what you have to say. Here's my take:
Jeff has a good point and a bad point...
Making MSNBC the anti-Fox News Channel is silly. Whatever propaganda Media Matters for America is putting out, the reality is that most large news organizations are sympathetic to the lib/dem point of view. There is no pent-up demand for a cable news network that is as liberal as Fox is conservative. If there were Rupert Murdoch would have created a liberal version of FNC.
How about putting the MS back in MSNBC?
Skip politics and focus on being the "WIRED" news network. Jeff is old enough to remember that as originally conceived (or at least promoted), MSNBC anticipated the connected, broadband world we now live in (at least in the US). Now that we actually live in that world why not go back to the original game plan and make MSNBC the most wired of the cable news shows.
They could start by streaming the show on the web 24/7. They ought to be able to figure out a way to compensate cable and satellite providers for offering their programming through the web.
On the web site the screen could take up a corner of the screen (with a button to expand to full screen) and the rest of the home page would be synchronized to the content in the newscast. Those scrolling tickers would be clickable on the web...as a newsstory aired the site could serve up links to related stories on the web including blog posts that link to the MSNBC.com version of the story. Every segment on every story could be packaged as a video podcast and displayed on a page with the MSNBC.com text version of the story. Those video podcasts could be distributed over segmented ("tagged") RSS feeds. A real effort should be made to promote all of this by not only making the site blog-friendly but doing segments/interviews of the people making news or generating buzz in the blogosphere (note: not having noted bloggers as pundits as was tried).
The newscast on cable/satellite should move towards the Bloomerg News Channel format with lots of information wrapped around the box except when showing video/images that are of particular interest. There is little value to providing full screen video of Chris Matthews talking to John Murtha. Why not show an interview like that with lots of information about Murtha, his critics, a scrolling set of viewer comments...make the newscast more like pop-up videos on MTV. Maybe limit the viewer comments in some way to cut down on the clap-trap...registered "super-users", a team of 1,000 selected bloggers, whatever...just not any idiot with a modem. During time slots when MSNBC is running taped material like Headliners and Legends give web viewers the option to watch alternative programming - maybe have someone who has developed a following like Monica Novatny or the guy with the headphones on Tucker Carlson or even some of the analysts like Jack Jacobs do their own little mini-shows, interviews, etc. I'm sure they have lots of people working there who would be thilled to have their own "show" on MSNBC.com. Maybe these shows become something like a farm system for the MSNBC cable channel.
I have loads of other ideas along these lines but to put it simply, if I were running MSNBC I'd be looking at how best to leverage my online strength to become a meaningful media outlet - that would mean sublimating the cable channel to MSNBC.com and making the shows more blog-like (in other words, more like Countdown with Keith Olbermann which mixes and matches repurposed newsreports, youtube-type videos, commentary and stories generating buzz on the blogs.)
MSNBC has become the dumping ground for the network. IF you have to move someone out of the NBC area, you drop them into the freezer that is msnbc.
No one is in control to take your letter. Every show is completely on its own.
Has anyone every come up with the offical number of appearances Joe wilson pulled, on Olbermann, and the network total?
The best dudes they had were Pat Cadell and the "Lando Calrisian' dude-Jeffers, Jeffries? Any help?
Keith you're right. I wonder if MSNBC will be smart enough to do it.
I think MSNBC needs to somehow demonstrate its status as an independent network. Show some autononmy from NBC. More people watch the Today show everyday than MSNBC's entire primetime lineup (probably an exageration, but not much of one). Why do they feel the need to constantly re-run Today show clips all day long?
MSNBC named Norah O'Donnell Chief Washington Correspondent over a year ago. But they continually use Andrea Mitchell all day and all night long. If Norah isn't capable of handling the job, let her go. Don't keep her on as dead-weight. Otherwise, let her do her job.
Which leads me to another issue. Apparently, Kaplan had a tendency to keep people on the payroll for no apparent reason. Monica Crowley is still talking about when Kaplan is going to put her back on the air. If you cancel a show, jetison the host or else put them back on the air.
I have heard the MS told NBC they are done, and NBC had announced a name change to be coming. Has there been a reversal on this, or could firing Kaplan have been a precursor to major changes all around after losing a partner? Anyone know?
Jeff Jarvis is really Scott McLelean. Just kidding. Jarvis is a much better public speaker than McLelean. So MSNBC is the anti-Fox network or it wants to be. Yeah, O.K. and your point is????? Fox should be the only news network? Sounds communist to me.
Who is this Jeff Jarvis? He seems to be quite dumb.
#1. MSNBC is ALREADY the anti-Fox network -- that is why it is failing. The last thing the majority of people want is a preachy liberal media outlet. As a result, MSNBC gets crappy ratings.
The mistake all the MSM-types make is to pretend that Fox is conservative rather than recognize that the MSM outlets are incredibly liberal.
MSNBC should turn into a legitimate source of news. If they became credible, they would get viewers. Instead of making crap up and spewing talking points, they should take a step back and say, "what is the news." Seems all these outlets have forgotten that the "who, what, why, where, when and how" is important.
On TV there's no bigger fool
For years he's been Kaplan's tool
Now Kaplan's out
Keith's still a lout
And Meltdown is now in the dead pool

chapter 3
A formal note from Iraq arrives at the White House:
“Consider please this, our most sincere offer, in full settlement of our conflict:
For those who through reason would care to choose peace instead of
resorting to warfare,
With utmost respect and provision for feelings and mindful of past indiscretions,
We humbly request your most close attention to matters of mutual profit,
A chance to amend our poor past relations and build toward a more stable future.
We wish to arrange a small meeting in secret, only those present who matter,
To offer appropriate measures, fair payment, for some goods and services rendered,
Build peace between nations, once close friends, but engaged now in near-combat,
A moment to place swords in scabbards, step back, stand down our gathering armies,
With honor a part of the overall planning, and always with hearts filled with caring,
Our offer includes countless valuable riches, and honor beyond all computing.
Mistakes have been made, we freely admit it, and humbly apologize for them,
Our misguided effort to blow up your father exhibits poor judgment, it’s certain,
And if it were under our province to undo such unkind behavior, believe us
We’d make it our duty to do so, and promptly, without even wasting a moment.
What’s done is done, though, that’s the painful truth, not even Allah can change it,
Our most current effort is geared to repayment, in fashion designed to your liking.
Our land is old land, the famed fertile crescent where mankind received his first blessings,
Resources have limits, we have lots of sand and some date palms of rather fine features,
The camels still range between scattered oasis and carpets are loomed in some cities.
In short we are simple and quite undemanding, a people accustomed to desert,
Hard working, quite honest and not prone to lying, we note we can make one concession:
Oil sits all below us, the fuel of the world, and it’s yours at a rather steep discount.
In short, we beseech, we request and entreat you to give peace a chance and consider
A fair and quite generous offer of black gold, delivered direct to your country.
And based on your background and that of your comrades whose own jobs included
some drilling,
We know you appreciate valuable assets, especially those that are liquid.
Please give us reply at your early convenience, since time, as you say, is the essence,
We remain at the ready to convene this discussion, with fondest regards, S. Hussein.”
The ashen face of George says all. Sweat
Gathers on his upper lip, dry tongue licks his lips,
His nostrils flare and he looks as if to speak
But only silence and rasping breath escape.
Stopped short and lacking words,
He must remind himself to breathe.
At last, composure brought to bear, he speaks,
But in a whisper, barely audible. “This
Is some kind of trick, and I’m not fooled.
No way Saddam wants to negotiate. Besides,
After all the time and money we’ve put into our plan,
We can’t afford the loss.”
Like a small child caught in a big lie,
He looks around searching for support.
His eyes dart from face to face, but finds
Uncertainty from those around him. “Oil is the prize,
And now it’s on the table, a deal might make
More money in the end,” says Condi Rice.
Despite rumors of the curse of Condoleezza,
Others listen when she forecasts the future.
Investing power in her passionate pronouncements.
Her female wiles keep the room of white men
Nervous about the future as they attempt
To possess Saddam’s deep pools of oil.
Foul Rumsfeld turns from Condi’s low-cut blouse
(It’s been a while since he’s felt a woman’s warmth),
And, shifting his seat he starts to speak. “I
Sincerely disagree, though I value Condi’s opinion,
Sly Saddam is a master of the masquerade, besides
I’ve planned to test some cool new weapons.”
“Our weapon sales bring us many billions,
And nothing helps as much as live demonstrations
Before an enthralled world.” he leans back
Grinning widely, as heads nod in agreement.
Meanwhile George, eyes closed,
Looks like he’s listening, but he’s not.
Inside his head Simple George has
A rockabilly tune that’s stuck. Something about
“Loving her so much it hurts, but it feels good.”
His tapping on the table draws attention and
Heads turn towards him sensing his deep thought.
The room is silent. He looks up.
He makes desperate attempt to push away the song,
But one phrase escapes and leaves his lips,
“There’s gonna be just one of us left standing in the end,”
No steel guitar accompanies the line. All
Bow their heads in solemn acquiescence,
A resolute decision has been made.
They stand in deference to their valued leader.
A wise decision has been made. In keeping
With tradition in these halls of power,
Their leader has shown trademark determination,
(This despite the underestimation of his critics
Who label him lightweight with Attention Deficit Disorder.)
Simple George is confused though pleased,
Thinking, “This governing thing's not so hard
As long as I surround myself with loyal, informed staff.”
It’s twenty-five to twelve; I’ve made a big decision.
I’ll work out now, then scarf a taco salad.
Is it cool the be the free world’s leader, or what?”
The Bushiad and The Idyossey -
And that is why "The Bushiad and The Idyossey" goes down into the stack of MYTHOLOGY just like The Odyssey because not one single thought in your cleverly articulated spew had a single shred of truth to it. Just another left-wing Kool-Aid drinking kook that thinks the war is about oil...that the existence of WMD's is the only justifiable reason for us to be there (no WMD's means we shouldn't be there)...Bush lied...blah blah blah (insert your favorite Michael Moore talking point here).
Hey! How about buying a clue??? If the war was REALLY about oil don't you think we would have attacked a country that SUPPLIES a great deal of our oil (Canada comes to mind...). For that matter, how about someone in our OWN BACK YARD like Mexico, Venezuala, or Canada? The only part oil plays in this equation is our attempt to stabilize (in the long term) the middle east by setting up some beacons of democracy.
Why is it that the lunatic left hates Christianity so much because they are "fanatics" but thinks it's OK that the majority of the middle east is run by people who want to cut your head off simply because you are "progressive" or "atheist" or anything else except their brand of Islam. You'd think you guys would be happy that by spreading democracy these countries will ultimately become more open and liberal and free-thinking. Nah...you'd rather waste your time hating Bush and chanting your zombielike mantra's..."no WMD's...Bush lied..."
