Not to be outdone by a story in the Times and a poll on AOL, TVGuide offers readers a story AND a poll. In just the latest example of the MSM lining up to spread the OlbyLove, TV Guide praises Olbermann's "sardonic wit" which drives the "successful and frequently hysterical" Countdown with Keith Olbermann and lumps Olby with the actually funny Jon Stewart.
What's useful about following this trip through the liberal media ecosystem is how you can follow the trail from TVNewser's constant proclamations about KO "growing" and "beating CNN" and "catching O'Reilly briefly" to stories like The Times piece claiming KO is a "great growth story" to TVGuide labelling the show as "successful". Now we can all debate the importance of the demo or how you measure growth. I might even be willing to entertain a discussion on whether Dan Abrams faith in Keith Olbermann is likely to ever be rewarded. But the claim today in TVGuide that Countdown is a "successful" show is just plain ludicrous.

What can we expect next as the MSM rallies behind Olbermann? A sitdown with Charlie Rose? A 60 Minutes profile? The cover of Time or Rolling Stone? Rest assured, you have not seen the last of MSM OlbyLove this summer. There is just one problem. As has been shown time and time again, no matter what they hype, at the end of the day KO disappoints. If anyone tuning into Countdown is really expecting some version of The Daily Show or the Colbert Report they are going to be quickly disabused of this notion and tune out which explains why these periodic fits of OlbyLove are necessary in the first place - KO can't build and sustain an audience.
This TV guide piece is wrong for so many reasons.
Anyway, I am enjoying the media blitz. It will result in a ratings blip followed by a return to awful numbers, and the MSLSD cronies will all scratch their heads in disbelief.
Oh, but I wish I could be a fly on the wall as Dan and company get excited at the gains in ratings after non-stop hype. The memos, the press releases, the notes to clients telling them to advertise on the KO juggernaut. Shortly thereafter the ratings will decline again, and the board room will grow sullen. KO's loyal leftist audience will be all that remains, and prime time will remain a dead zone. The only thing that would make this scenario better is if Karmabites throws a few blockbuster e-mails out there in the middle of Keith's triumphant publicity tour.
Please fix the words outdown and proclomations before someone thinks we are illiterate. Then erase this post. Thanks, Jim
Jim,
Because Movable Type sucks, I generally write the post, publish it, read it on the web site and then fix all the typos and screwing fonts that show up. I was in the midst of doing that when you read the post. So, while I appreciate your sincere effort to improve OlbermannWatch, I think I will pass on your suggestion that I erase the post.
I think he meant his own post BC
You are correct sir!!
The lead story tonight on Olby ( okay, the #5 story ) just has to be the Bush job approval ratings for the past week - - 43, 43, 43, 43, and 44% consecutively for the past 5 days. This is real news!!
Jim said "This is real news."
Which is why it won't be on CD. No, the number 5 story will be "the great leak case," this time noticibly absent will be NBC analyst/former CIA spokesman Bill Harlow. Wouldn't do to be speculating on the potential legal troubles an NBC employee might have. Better to speculate on what Novak might reveal tonight on Fox, more on whether or not Armitage is the primary source, and how we can spin this to hurt the Bush administration some more.
No, rising poll numbers do not fit the CD agenda. They make KO queasy.

That's debatable.
Said in jest, of course. But it is becoming more and more interesting to see how Olby can keep pushing the leak case day after day, as the story continues to fall apart. The case never should have been brought at all.
It's only a matter of time before Olby shoots himself in the foot again, or fires off a few more rounds at his fellow employees.See, he has a long history of wreckage in his wake at every single network he's ever worked for, including MSNBC which should have known better than to hire him again after their last go-round with him.
They can dress a pig any way they want. But a PIG isa PIG.

well, only for you guys. fans of the show are not disappointed.

big if.

shows get promoted, same as it ever was. this one's no different, except for you guys.
- KO can't build and sustain an audience.
against all evidence to the contrary, as the show is being kept and promoted as a centerpiece.
The memos, the press releases, the notes to clients telling them to advertise on the KO juggernaut.
shows get promoted, same as it ever was. and yes, virginia, trade publications collaborate and coordinate efforts. call it a MSM conspiracy if you like.
Shortly thereafter the ratings will decline again
perhaps. have you got a crystal ball? everything waxes and wanes. no big surprise there.
KO's loyal leftist audience will be all that remains
which seems sufficient to not only keep the show admidst the latest shakeup, but to promote it anew, and as a centerpiece. i know you think the campaign a sign of desperation, but that's both a bit biased and fairly counter-intuitive, and not really supported by the evidence at hand.
I guess you have to give the folks at MSNBC some credit for the recent wave of good PR for KO. Think about it...he's in last place with marginal improvement in the demo category (in fairness, how much worse can it be?) and they have parlayed that into a wind of good publicity and a public perception that KO is on the way up and BOR is on the way out.
I'm no O'Reilly fan, but anyone who does a little checking will see that his ratings dwarf Olbermann's. There's no feud, but just a media favorite yelling loudly in a nearly empty theater.
Yet, KO is the media darling for the moment. But when the moment ends, he'll likely be back where in he started: McEnroeratingsland.
And that will happen for one simple reason: Countdown is awful and no one is watching.

Since when does an established, growing by leaps and bounds, tv show need this type of constant promotion?
He's the host that's obnoxious and loud
Cindy Sheehan is part of his crowd
Keith defines moonbat
He's wearing an ass hat
His mother has got to be proud
If I can quote Orwell inappropriately once again......
I'll wrestle anyone on this board who mocks Keith. I did a little wrestling back in the day, you know.
Are you "as good once as you ever was"?
Jim, now you know that good old fashioned patriotic country music is beyond the understanding of those America-hating liberals out there. And more's the pity, they don't know what they are missing.
This PR stunt by MSNBC is reminiscent of the Nixonian era attempts to harness the press in its favor. It's almost Orwellian in its magnitude and the baseless claims of success by Countdown are McCarthyite in its disingenousness.
And Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter are evil f***s.
SMG
At least when Olbermann uses the Nixonian or Orwellian refrences they're in context. But hey, if you want to compare MSNBC to the Executive Branch of the United States Government go right ahead.
Glenn Beck again beat Olby on Tuesday in the ever so coveted "demo" group. Nary a mention from Brian again on this oft ( always ) overlooked stat.
Whoops, I mean Beck beats Hardball.
At least when Olbermann uses the Nixonian or Orwellian refrences they're in context.
Context? He uses one of them on nearly every show. Some proportion.
If anyone seriously believes that America circa 2006 in any way resembles the totalitarian society described in 1984, they've either never read Orwell, are journalistic hacks or are desperate to appeal to a liberal audience to get ratings for a failed show.

Just because a neophyte station manager decides to make Olbermann his clean up hitter does not mean it is a good idea. His audience may "seem sufficient" to you or Abrams, but to the rest of the universe, it seems completely inadequate.
It is your right to love Olbermann. It is your right to watch him. However, you are not allowed to redefine success. You cannot call last place success, and you cannot claim that support by incompetent managers is an indication of worthiness. Sorry, but Danny Abrams was a failed host, and he is in over his head as a manager. What makes anyone think Abrams knows how to create or pick out a hit show when he couldn't produce a hit show himself?
Here are the latest Olbermann Numbers:

Jim, now you know that good old fashioned patriotic country music is beyond the understanding of those America-hating liberals out there.
As a liberal and a country music fan, I'm amazed that I haven't exploded from the internal contradiction. (Personally, I prefer Trace Adkins' "Arlington". Very soulful, that.)
None of my Orwell references are in context.
Roger Miller is, and always will be, the best country music singer of all time.
Hey Nonfactor, what about us?
I don't listen to the Dixie Chicks, but anyone who doesn't listen to them because they said they are ashamed of the President needs to re-learn the meaning of music.
Non
have you forgotten "The Man In Black"?
I'm a huge fanny of Johnny Cash, but when it comes to flat out country music it has to be Roger Miller with Cash right behind.
Nonfactor wrote:

You know, that may be the first true thing you've said on this site.
fanny is Yorkshire slang for fan
Great, so you are a leftist European wasting everyone's time on this site? Figures
fanny

"Great, so you are a leftist European wasting everyone's time on this site? Figures"
Great another idiot wasting everyone's time
My teeth are bleeding!
Brush them
Sorry, I'm a crook.
This falls under the "even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while" category.
NYT writer and Olby ass kisser Bill Carter did a puff piece on Orange Boy on July 11 and included the typical hype about KK supposedly making his move upward into the "coveted" demo (which has been of course throroughly debunked elsewhere on this site). Carter did write this bit towards the very end of his piece addressing the political (!) nature of Orange Boy's show:
"That a rabid audience can be built for a political discussion show from the left, as it has so effectively been done on talk radio and on some of Fox’s programs from the right, has not been demonstrated before, unless you count the fake news shows on Comedy Central."
Hold the phone!!! You mean, the NYT, the premiere authority on liberalism is telling us that that the "political discussion" on Meltdown comes "from the LEFT"????? Wait, Wait, that can't be true. Orange Boy himself told us it wasn't true.
Why, in an April 6, 2006 interview with San Bernardino County Sun reporter David Kronke, Orange Boy refuted the very idea that he was political. He said he had no more interest in political outcomes than a baseball game he might be announcing. Could it be that Orange Boy might not be telling the truth about the level of his political partisanship?
