"COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN" (8:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. ET)
Host: Keith Olbermann
Bad news from Iraq is always welcome at The Hour of Spin, so the lead story tonight wasn't Mel Gibson (though that was certainly teased in the opening spiel) but rather the war. Excerpts from today's testimony were shown: questions by Hillary Clinton (D), Carl Levin (D), but no (R)s. The Wolffe Man said it's all a "pivotal moment", and the administration is "running out of excuses". He said Clinton's adversarial approach reflects changing political tides, and mention was made of how Tom DeLay could "make a political comeback". Nonpartisan Olbermann's reaction: "Good grief!"
The topic shifted to the Middle East, courtesy of a pre-taped report from Martin Fletcher. Coverage on this amounted to under three minutes, complete with KO again giving "great thanks" to the machine that played the prerecorded report.
After a second tease for Attack #104, we got a "global warming" expose: an internet video critical of Al Gore was actually assembled by someone "linked" to the oil industry. Scandal! Outrage! What, do these people think they have free speech or something? A regurgitated NBC report recycled what "most scientists" say, and buttressed that frame by not using clips from any of those "other scientists".
After teasers for Elvis Presley's teddy bear and (you guessed it) Mel Gibson, "oddball" presented the usual flotsam and jetsam (a mad dog, grainy security video), followed by another #104 teaser. The #3 segment had actual news: recently released NORAD tapes from 9/11. KO said they show "chaos" in the response of the military and maybe even (drumroll!) a "coverup"! Posner said the NORAD reactions were examples of "keystone kops" ineptitude, and that the Pentagon tried to spin to make NORAD look better.
That cursed war interrupted with "breaking news" of Beirut bombings (reported by Fox several minutes earlier), but it did add another 1.5 minutes to Countdown's coverage of the Middle East (all of four minutes--five with a last minute update at the end of the hour). Then more teases for #104 and for (surprise!) Mel Gibson. Followed by yet another tease for the latest O'Reilly attack. (Class, that makes how many? If you guessed five, you win the Olbsession Award.)
The #2 story was another example of "Factor Fiction" where the "lies" of Bill O'Reilly would be exposed. KO opened with Krazy Keith stretching the truth about Bill O'Reilly:
He's attacked me and this network again...
Actually, he never mentioned Olbermann or MSNBC.
Gee, if all he needed was "provocation", he'd have attacked you about 103 times by now. Of course the "provocation" bit was a "joke" (you can tell, because The Laughing Stagehand was cackling again), and Olby went on to talk about this interview:
Bill-O went off again, somehow meandering from a defense of Mel Gibson...
Olbermann lie: O'Reilly did not defend Mel Gibson.
The infamous, deplorable Keith Olbermann launched into another of his famous "dramatic readings" of the transcript, interspersing snarky, too-hip-for-my-shirt asides that had The Laughing Stagehand in convulsions. Then all of a sudden, it was over. It just stopped. Color us disappointed. Where was the "fiction" Olby promised to expose? What were the "lies" that Mr Bill spoke? Um, well, you see, there weren't any. Those two promises from The Schmuck were--all together now--more Olbermann lies.
The rest of Countdown was Madonna, Brittney Spears, Kevin Federline, and Mel Gibson: Day VIII.
In the "nonpartisan" Media Matters Minute, a Republican Congressman was a runner-up, and "comedian Rush Limbaugh" was "worst". Video of Olby's Rush Attack will appear on the Soros site within the next 24 hours or Keith will sulk under his desk.
