OK. The Boston Phoenix is a liberal alternative paper and Jeff Cohen is a noted liberal activist-cum-media critic so it's not exactly the REAL MSM but you get the idea. For those who have not read the book (I have, Eric Deggans gave me a copy a couple weeks ago), Cohen was on Crossfire back in the good old bad days, then on Fox Newswatch. He left to produce Phil Donahue's MSNBC show before the network took it off their air in the run up to the Iraq War.
Dan Kennedy interviews Cohen about his new book Cable News Confidential and we get this gem of an exchange:
Q. GE still owns MSNBC, but its new golden boy seems to be Keith Olbermann, a liberal. Doesn't this suggest that TV executives will go with whatever works?
A. I wish. Do I wish. I'd still be there. I'd be rich and powerful. And famous. I like Keith. I liked him years and years ago. I've never met the guy. I like his persona. Obviously others do, too. I like his smarts, I like his whimsy, and lately, obviously, he's pandering to my political sensibilities as well as the next guy's.
Got that? He "likes Keith" but ""He's never met Keith". That seems to be common theme - people who "like" Keith have never met him. If I had to guess, Cohen is EXACTLY the kind of guest KO will jump to book and sucking up to KO is as good a way as any to get the John Dean treatment as any.
Truer words have never been spoken. "people who like Keith have never met him."
"he's pandering to my political sensibilities" ---KO would NEVER pander would he????
But the people who have supposedly met KO usually don't have much in the way of positive words about him.
Sometimes I wonder where these people come from.
"I wish. Do I wish. I'd still be there. I'd be rich and powerful. And famous."
I don't know about the rich part, but powerful and famous? To be famous, wouldn't people have to know who you are? Powerful? Whatever. I suppose some people thought the Yugo was powerful, too.
"I like his persona. Obviously others do, too."
Alrighty. Here's your glass of Kool-Aid, Mr. Cohen.
"I like his smarts, I like his whimsy, and lately, obviously, he's pandering to my political sensibilities as well as the next guy's."
Define smarts.
I wonder what it means if I first read "whimsy" as "whiny"?
And "pandering to my political sensibilities"? More like pandering for book sales and e-mail pen-pals.
"That seems to be common theme - people who 'like' Keith have never met him."
Do you stalk Keith or something so you know all the people he knows? Do you ask all those people if they like Keith? It's statements like those that make you look obsessed and pathetic. It's one thing to attack his views or what he says in public. But to attack him because you claim to know everyone he knows somehow is creepy.
How timely!!!
I listened to an interview with this guy on my local NPR station this week (NPR provides me with my daily laugh jag...could Leftists be more dumb?)
Amyway, Cohen stated that he believes KO doesn't have long to go on MSNBC, particularly after the shameful 9-11 rant, which Cohen loved .
Cohen stated the higher ups at GE are "plotting" to get KO booted because "KO makes the misadministration look bad"..so much for the so called objectivity at NPR.
Regardless,,,let's all hope Cohen is correct in his assessment
Cohen's remarks on NPR sound a lot like a pre-emptive strike for when KO's LOW RATINGS get him fired. Cohen is the guy who became convinved that Donahue was cancelled because it was somehow out of sync with the the rest of the country on the Iraq War. Now KO has to be "stopped" because he is making the Bush Administration "look bad". Ha! KO should have been fired a long time ago for making NBC News look bad.
Cohen is only the latest in the line of people preparing talking points if/when KO gets the boot. They are saying it's becuase he is speaking truth to power. Most sane people say it's because of pitiful ratings.
Also, I like the line about how Cohen has never met Olby, yet still loves him. Funny. Karma Bites1 at for thisreliefmuchthanks.blogspot.com met him and now hates him. Coincidence?
I think the leftists are making a huge mistake by making Olby their "spokesperson." How long before he self-destructs as he has at every single other job he's ever had?
What can i say? I hate Olbermann!
When Olbermann goes the way of Err America next March. Who is the leading candidate to replace him?
I imagine MSNBC will bring in one of those child molesters or prisoners they are always having on the air these days following Olby.
rico,
I think MessNBC will run prime time prison footage. They seem to have an obsession with prison documentaries.
They're currently pimping (hard, very hard) statutory rapist Debbie LaFave.
My guess...a primetime block devoted to all the gorgeous TILFs across the land.
Ratings talk and BS walks. Keith, you're DOOMED.
Jeff Cohen was (I believe) a co-founder of FAIR, the leftwing media watch group, and most recently was the press secretary to Dennis Kucinich when the congressman ran for President.
In sum, he's about as hard core a lefty as one can find. And even he acknowledges that Olbermann is "pandering" to his crowd.
No more evidence is needed of Mr. Olbermann's dishonesty ("I have no agenda"), but we'll add this to the indictment anyway.

There's an AOL poll rating newscsters...

Scroll down, KO is one of the newscasters and Almost 60% of the voters have never watched him. ROFLMAO
Vote or Die!
Poor Keith -- he's always last, even in the survey (#11/11)! How did they come up with these choices anyway?
"I think the leftists are making a huge mistake by making Olby their "spokesperson." How long before he self-destructs as he has at every single other job he's ever had?"
That is a good point. They should run a whole network of these schmucks so when Olby has his "fallafel" moment, others can take up the banner. But I thought most of you guys already believed that the whole "media" is made up of these people anyway. No?
I've read Jeff Cohen's book. He did found FAIR using money he won in a lawsuit in California. Apparently the police were spying on him and his friends and he caught them. He is most certainly a card-carrying lefty but writes about how he was seduced into becoming a part of the very media he had set up to expose as a fraud.
The book is actually pretty interesting if you are a cable news junkie it's got a lot of inside baseball stuff but good stories about Pat Buchanan (he was with him at Crossfire), how Fox News Watch was created and how he left for MSNBC to do Donahue. You might be surprised to learn he has a lot of good thinks to say about Fox News and almost nothing good to say about MSNBC.
A theme that runs through the book is that the cable news networks put people on TV who they claim are "from the left" but that as someone who really is "from the left" he felt the people who were supposedly lefties were, in fact, moderates (Michael Kinsley and Bill Press are two he singles out). He believes that the reason for this is that the media is "corporate" (read "conservative") and does not really leftists (like him) on TV. You might say that since he was on cable TV for so long his own case disproves his point; he would answer that he was only let on TV when surrounded by moderates posting as lefties and conservatives and that when MSNBC put a "real" lefty on TV (Donahue) they shut him down.
I'd say one thing for sure, if Cohen is praising Keith and saying that Keith is pandering TO HIM that's a very clear signal that whatever denials Keith may care to make, the lefties all know he is a lefty.
Jeff Cohen was communications director and not press secretary for Dennis Kucinich.
My error (FWIW).

FYI, Olbermann just said on the Dan Patrick show that he'll be "revisiting" his 9/11 speech and that he'll also be on the Today show tomorrow morning to promote his book, save democracy, preserve the flame of freedom, et cetera.
The hard hitting Matt Lauer will interview him.

update on the poll --
KO -- out of Total Votes: 64,929
only 6% voted Perfection.
I voted "train wreck" because I didn't want to die.
Olbermann will be on TODAY tomorrow morning hawking his book with Matt Lauer.
That's the problem with the libs. Their "spokespeople" (Cohen, Rosie O'Donnell, Olbermann, Michael Moore et al) are always so easy to dislike that I doubt many would want to vote with their side.
That's the problem with the cons. Their "spokespeople" (Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin et al) are always so easy to dislike that I doubt many would want to vote with their side.
Your comment makes no sense. I doubt many liberals would know who Jeff Cohen is if they tripped over him. Rosie O'Donnell hasn't been on TV in years that I know of. I don't remember hearing anything from Michael Moore since the 2004 election season. Olbermann is at least on TV.
ROsie? You mean the ROsie who had a show and is now on the View? That Rosie? The Rosie who thinks that Radical Christian are JUST AS BAD as Radical Islam?
She is insane.
That's the problem with liberals. their spokesmen like Schumer, kennedy, pelosi, levin, clinton, feingold, OLBERMANN, the entire Hollyeird liberal set, the socialist party, moveon.org, democratic underground, GLAAD, are so repulsive and repugnant and anti American I doubt anybody in their right mind would want to either listen to them or vote for them. Onky morons support liberals.
Very nice. Someone else posted as "Missy" at 5:55 p.m.
Go get your own screen name!!!
Democrat Chicago Mayor Daly Vetos Living Wage:
When asked about it by a reporter "why did you do it Dick" responded "look with the dead persons voting block going my way who needs the living wage voters."
Mayor Daly: what second ammendment? guns are outlawed here so Chicago is the safest city in America?
Hes a real New Yorker that Mayor Daly. LOL. Daly doesnt want honest citizens to be able to defend themselves. But the goblins are armed and dangerous.
Of course they don't want armed citizens to be able to defend themselves as liberals they are on the side of the criminals!
Well they need their votes. "Felons for Feingold"
"Gangs for Gore", "Creeps for Kerry", "Pedophiles for Pelosi", "Murders for Mccain", "Crackheads for Clinton"........
don't forget ovaries for olbermann- the feminist olbermann abortion society.
Abortion killing liberals since 1973. See every cloud does have a silver lining.

Did you not read the LAW (supported by SEVENTY YEARS and over 200 court decisions) that the states have the power to regulate and/or prohibit guns as long as it is not an absolute ban?
And as for being on the side of the criminals - that is patently absurd and I will not respond to such a vague argument.
you just did little buddy and what part of "shall not be infringed " can you not warp yourlittle liberal mind around? Oh and some of the liberal states ans cities DO have complete bans, Chicago, NY City,Washington DC, ya know all the really "safe " cites. If gun control really worked Washington DC would be the safest place in America. And just because 70 years and as you say 200 court cases support it most certainly does not mean it is right. There are plenty of instance where tha courts have been wrong. You aslo don't realize that the democrats supporting anti -second ammendment laws is one of THE main reasons dems keep losing elections.
