There was another sound. It was the sound of the little metal pull chord on the lamp on the bedside table. It seemed like an eternity between the time of the pull and the click of the lamp.

The immediate area of the bed filled with the starkly generic light of the bargain 60 watt light bulb in the lamp. It was yellow and harsh and stung Johnny’s sleep hungry eyes. But it was also obscured by something dark. Something black. Something billowing. Something that shimmered in and out of focus. And with that shimmering was a frost, a cold, a frozenness to the air.

Johnny looked into the darkness, the blackness, the pit of cold blind nebulous air that hovered in front of the light. A stroke? A cataract? He was trying to rationalize something, anything.

In an instant, the grip on his shoulder became stronger, harder, painful. It grabbed him through the thin cotton of his jalapeno pepper print pajamas and pulled him from where he cowered in the covers. It thrust him into a sitting position.

“What is this?” He whimpered, his voice cracking like an adolescent boy.
The blackness laughed with ironic stereotypical evil laughter as it passed in an out of focus.
Johnny struggled for words, but before anything slipped off his tongue, the room was filled with a pure and blinding light, and in an instant, the figure before him came into focus.

Johnny looked at the bony hand firmly gripping his shoulder with utter horror.

“Death...” he whispered, he just couldn’t muster the voice.
Death laughed, again with his ironic stereotypical evil tone. “Yes, Johnny.”
“Wha-what d-d-do you w-w-want from m-me?” Johnny stammered.

I. By DEFINITION Movement is cited before government or state. That is why I condider the term to be dead on. If I accept your contention that it must have a state leads to the inexorable conclusion rhat fascism did not exist in Italy prior to 1922 or in Germany prior to 1933.

Let's shelve that part of it and keep to the argument:

That inexporable conclusion seems wrong to me. Fascism can be a movement within a state, but it cannot exist without a state, and it is in relation to a state. The proto-fascists argued on very nationalist grounds that their particular states were being weakened by liberal democratic forces and argued for the exercise of the supreme power of the state to stamp out these forces and reassert the dominance of that particular state. Islamist terrorists are not confined to a state or even a particular region. You can say that they are after some great "global state," in the future, but I think it is quite a stretch. As a whole, they do not have nationalist goals in anything like the traditional sense.

In practical language, the word fascism today refers to the specific governmental forms of two of the authoritarian states we fought in WWII, Germany and Italy. Any current definition of fascism is simply in relation to those regimes and whatever can be cobbled together as similar between them. Your method of argument I believe shows this. Now you can find some things that are similar between Germany and Italy on the one hand and MOST global Islamist terrorists on the other (eg. genocidal anti-semitism) and some things that are very violently different (eg. ideas of property and ownership, theories of racial supremacy). But it is, at very best, a very confusing case, so it's most clear meaning really becomes it's evocation of WWII. If that is intentional, that is perhaps why we hear other ill-fitting language such as "appeasement," a term, like fascism, that has a practical historical meaning that surpasses it's technical meaning in evocative power.

My bottom line point is that while you can make an argument for why "Islamofascism," isn't incorrect, it certainly isn't particularly accurate. There are definitely more accurate choices, and in light of that this one seems to have been chosen to liken this conflict to WWII. I think this is a big big mistake if taken seriously. It isn't very similar at all, and fighting it that way is a sure loser if you ask me. Iraq is the first test case of that, and Iran may be the second.

This year the congress appropriated 90m for the purpose of celebrating victory in Iraq. I guess they mean parades and such. It is being rolled over to next year's budget. This mindset says a lot to me about this whole approach.

I don't think it is "a", I think it is "the," because it is supposed to be a universal concept. It would take quite a while, KfK, to explore the notion of the Caliphate. It is very nebulous with only the most imperfect historical instantiations. We could look at the Turkish version, Osama's version, the views of the Caliphate in Indonesia (the most populous Islamic nation)...where do you want to go with that?

In brief, I think the best way to think about it is as the Islamic version of the Papacy in the middle ages. I would see some parralel with a notion like "The Third Reich" if that concept can be divorced from the racial identity. You could flesh that out. Why don't you have at it?

Is your suggestion in mentioning it that because of this concept, global Islamic terrorist networks are therefore "fascist," or that this concept makes this conflict more similar to WWII? Or are you going somewhere else with that?

I don't understand the connection of slave owning or knowing really old people to conservatism, nor the connection of conservatism to casting this conflict as WWII. I do understand your main thrust, which is that the threat we face is so great that alarmist language is appropriate and helpfull. I have little problem with being alarmist, and using images like beheading and melting phones and so forth. My problem is with likening it to a particular conflict that it is simply not like, and then fighting it that way. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. But those who think history repeats exactly are equally doomed. Discarding the argument that the conflict is being misconstered and mismanaged as WWII-- equating such an argument with easy going apeasement and naivete-- is in my opinion a shoddy and dangerous political maneuver that will divide us at a very bad time.

I am not saying, as the Bush backers here seem to continually hear and accuse me on, that this is not a dangerous conflict. It's pretty easy to imagine that there might be nuclear bombs going off in cities in coming years. The prospect makes me sick and makes me wonder where my daughter will be if and when that happens. But I believe rather strongly that the tack this administration taking leans towards defending against the impossible (eg. a unified Muslim World Caliphate) and working towards the impossible (military conquest of a concept). All the while the odds of the highly likely (sporadic destabilizing disasters) are only increased.

Here is the very mindset I think is so wrong:

There is not going to be any "dancing in the streets," because there is never going to be an end to this fight. This is the WWII mentality. It is not a war in the traditional sense and it will not have an end. There is also never going to be some crazed Muslim hoard that takes over America and puts us all to death by beheading. Again, WWII, and this is, imo, so simplistic and so wrong. And you may think it is a harmless mistake where you can't really lose by going over the top, but I don't.

In my opinion, if the administration is wrong, the consequences are not "dancing in the streets." The consequences are molten streets. If they are wrong--if they are fighting the wrong war in the wrong way, surrendering our values, creating and radicalizing enemies in bold and indiscriminate military strokes, rather than slowly cultivating moderate elements and transformation from within--the stakes are very high indeed.

If I am wrong, and it is possible to kill all the extremists in the world and militarily force change on their societies to prevent new ones from being created, then we would have missed a great opportunity. But it is pretty clear to me even this early, with essentially no progress yet made and a whole lot of people dead and disgraced, that at the very least you can't do this without profoundly altering what the United States stands for. Even without the long term physical risks that this implies to me, even without the suckers odds of it actually working, I'm not sure I would be interested.
