It's hard to make out just what Mackenzie Carpenter had in mind for her piece in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. I spoke to her at length and thought I had a sense of what what she planned to write about but I've read her article a few times now and for the life of me cannot grasp the central idea.
This piece is better than most MSM pieces and does not follow the usual Olby puff-piece formula but had its questionable moments. OlbyWatch readers will note that she claims KO is up "67 percent" figure sorta like David Bauder's AP story which claimed he was up 69 percent (see A few words on ratings reality... for an explanation of why neither figure is even remotely accurate).
My pal Jay Rosen gets a mention here as well but as it fairly typical for an MSM piece there is no mention that Jay is a liberal - he is simply "a media critic and journalism professor at New York University". Yet when media critic Noel Sheppard is mentioned, the paper goes to great lengths to make sure the readers know that Sheppard is affiliated with Brent Bozell who is clearly labeled a conservative.
Of course the best part is that I am quoted which makes this an excellent piece:
Robert Cox, a New York businessman, has even started his own anti-Olbermann Web site, "OlbermannWatch.com," where he regularly dissects Olbermann's commentaries and news reports, which he calls sloppily researched.
"I happen to like NBC news," says Cox. "I grew up watching it. My sense is, though, that he's undermining the brand of NBC news and the integrity of that organization by not fact-checking stories, lifting material from other Web sites and only putting on guests he agrees with, which is totally irresponsible."
You will also see some OlbyWatch handiwork at play in piece: the use of the phrase "Rummy Rant", her reporting that feminists criticizing Keith for "disparaging remarks about women -- usually tabloid favorites like Paris Hilton", ,mentioning the Chris Wallace "a monkey posing as a newscaster" bit and the TCA event where KO gave "a Nazi salute while wearing a mask of conservative Fox commentator Bill O'Reilly"
Robert, the piece was down the middle as you can get. I'm sure anything short of an "Olbermann bashing story" will not meet with your standards for "fair" journalist.
Being a reporter and anchor, myself, the story was completely even. No tilt. A fine representation of both sides of the "Olby Debate."
Yes, James, but it's yet another mainstream media piece promoting a guy who has never, ever come anywhere close to winning in his time slot, and often finishes in 3rd, 4th or even 5th place.
The MSM loves to give KO free publicity.
Read what you want bigred. She's not promoting him, unless you consider ANY coverage as publicity.
She is merely stating facts and other people's opinion (both opinions). How that is kissing his ass is beyond me, but apparantly that's all you see in the article.
As far as finishing in 5th place... apparantly you missed the Nielson numbers the reporter quoted where Olbermann is beating Nancy Grace for second with growing consistency.
James,
You claim to be a reporter, but you are not very good at facts.
The media has given KO tons and tons of free publicity over the past several months. No matter how balanced this piece was, it is still free publicity for slimebag who does not deserve it.
Nowhere in my previous post did I saw the reporter was "kissing his ass", but that's how you paraphrased me.
Also, KO finished 5th one night last week, and 4th another night. Perhaps it is you who missed the Neilsen numbers.
James,
Since I wrote...
"This piece is better than most MSM pieces"
"does not follow the usual Olby puff-piece formula"
"an excellent piece"
Some readers might conclude that I generally liked the piece and was complimentary towards the writer. That I pointed out two minor quibbles is hardly the same thing as pining for "Olby bashing". My point about not grasping the point of the piece is that it alternates back and forth between different quotes, comments and factual statements without any clear narrative thread. If you see one in the piece please share it with me.
Dear Mr. Robert Cox,
While I must say that you are certainly a niggah... A niggah who can't write... Who doesn't know how to have fun... A New York 'Businessniggah' who hasn't gotten laid in a lomg time, if ever...
I'm very sorry niggah... You lose...
Peace be with all my niggah's,
Mike

Is this person a regular to this site or some random?? A quick check of thier ISP may help here. Not looking for personal info, just curious who would dislike Mr. Cox so much.
The point is that Olbermann continues to receive an inordinate amount of press coverage given his pathetic ratings. Both Bill O'Reilly and Anderson Cooper have had best-selling books this year which drwarfed Olbermann's in sales. I don't see either of them getting this kind of press coverage never mind that both of them are far better known than Olbermann is. His ratings are pathetic and also don't merit the kind of press attention he gets. While I'll agree that this article was more balanced than 99.9% of what I've read on him this year, I still have to question why it is that Olbermann receives so much press attention given his pathetic ratings.
Hey James,
Check out Tuesday night's ratings. 4th place for Olbermoron overall and 4th in his coveted demo.
I smell a special comment coming soon!
Last night's show sucked big time, even by Olby standards (low). He was lucky to place fourth.
Robert Cox, a New York businessman, has even started his own anti-Olbermann Web site, "OlbermannWatch.com," where he regularly dissects Olbermann's commentaries and news reports, which he calls sloppily researched.

Is our R. Cox the same "Cox" from Cox & Forkum, a conservative political cartoon website duo?!?
bigred,
Perhaps you could help me find these Tuesday ratings numbers your referring to.
I can only find Monday nights numbers... where KO was second overall and in the key demo.
They are available here every night.
http://insidecable.blogsome.com/2006/12/13/tuesdays-numbers-21/
Thank you, Jim.
That's the pattern: Olby does well on Monday night (2nd or 3rd), but usually finishes 3rd, 4th or 5th Tuesday-Thursday. He usually does a bit better on Friday when O'Reilly is off. Either way, having the same guests on night after night (Alter/Milbank/Shuster/CreepyMusto) is not exactly compelling television.
Long before I realized what a complete and utter fraud and poser KO was, I'd already gone weary of the same exact guests every single night. And even if you dislike Fox News and BOR as I do, there are just so many times you can legitimately name them as "WPITW" before that gets old too. When you compare the quality of the show he was doing in 2003/2004 with what he's doing now, there is no comparison. He actually put effort into it in the first couple of years. Now he appears to have set it on cruise control and just repeats himself endlessly. No wonder he can't put together five good days of ratings in a row.
He has the same guests, all on the MSNBC payroll, and ZERO newsmakers. On the rare occasion he lands an actual newsmakers, i.e. Clinton or Obama, he tries to spin that his softball, drooling interview was actually newsworthy.
It's really pathetic.
I love it to how O'Reilly's rerun buries KO's first run night after night after night.

Hans: This is serious-time war coverage, these days. There is no time to be running around looking for a whole plethora of guests. Keith Olbermann needs real-time sources that can be put on air in a reasonably fast fashion. No time at all for games.
I don't know if you caught Olbermann's denial that he's Howard Beale or not, but this blog post -- entitled, "What's the Frequency, Keith?" -- honors his request:
http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2006/12/what-is-frequency-keith-some-have.html
"Keith Olbermann needs real-time sources that can be put on air in a reasonably fast fashion. No time at all for games."
Ya, Herr Olbermann's wayyyyyyyyyyyy too serious a journalist for anything like playing games with the News... so many Oddball segments and stories about Brittney and Paris, and soooo little time for booking quality guests...
Oh, please. News programs get interviews with newsmakers. KO runs his same liberally biased guests show after show.
He opens every show with a Bush bashing segment, but not once has he scheduled White House spokesman Tony Snow for an interview. Why? Because only those opinions that are in line with KO's warped view are allowed on his 4th place show.

I would not even give this piece a second thought. The people that read the Pittsburgh-Post-Gazette. Are about the same number of people who show up at Pittsburgh Pirate Games.
Look there is one way we can always knock these so called reporters out of the park every time. Anybody and I mean anybody that has LISTENED to Mr. O'Reilly's radio show KNOWS he is a TRADITIONALIST!!! He says it almost every day! Anybody who has talked to O'Reilly knows this.
I think whats happening here is somebody is running a General talking points text to these people and if they put a good write up in their paper, they get a night at whatever hotel NBC puts their guests up in Manhattan. Then,if it's a really good write up they throw in dinner and tickets to a show. And if they really, really put a good write up about Keith in their paper. NBC will cancel the meet and greet with Keith.
Talk about the carrot and the stick approach!!!!
Oh Bicker Boy!
I'm sure Tony Snow would be more then happy to clear his slate to see Keith.
Is our R. Cox the same "Cox" from Cox & Forkum, a conservative political cartoon website duo?!?
Nope, but I met both of them in Nashville last year.
Dear Niggah....
It is so obvious to me that you are a stupid assed niggah who, once again (&, as you haven't challenged me on this points I made in my past blog) HAS NEVER gotten laid with a woman. I know Robert 'Reid' Cox... He doesn't know from where, but, let me put it to you this way... We went to school together for awhile... This guy is an atypical aesexual fruit! Ask him who he works for... He will tell you, probably, a law firm in Virginia... I will tell you, (or, rather scare you,) by saying that this asswipe actually works for the Federal Government as a lawyer in the Civil Rights Department! Now, I realize that for, well, EVERYONE who has written on this blog, that this, in & of itself, sounds good! I want to inform all of you that if you thought Mark Foley was bad (which you assumably didn't... judging from all of your right wing, ideologically & factually bereft BS,) you should see this character... He is really scary!
& as far as The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (& it's subscription service as related too Pirates tickets sold goes,) I'd have to say, as a resident of the city of Pittsburgh & as one who was, quite frankly, GREATLY offended by Mackenzie Carpenters obviously right-wing agenda in attacking the ONLY journalist who makes sense in what he says every night, that the Pirateas attendence is not bad enough, unfortunately, to make our buccos competitive. & that that Niggah Mackenzie Carpenter is nothing but a moron... Like that right-wing, ideologically, & factually challenged pal, M(r?). Cox, & similar to the best buddy (& unofficial sponsor of this website,) Bill O'... Yes, I read that article & I WAS OFFENDED by it... Not, as all of the niggahs on this website seem to believe, because the article was somehow 'TOO FAIR' for a good journalist, but, rather, because it was a lousy piece done half-assed by a lousy journalist.. I should have known that this was a cite for morons to congregate when I read about it in that stupid rag... But no, stupid me... I actually decided to come join you people... &, much to my despair, (however NOT to my surprise) have found nothing but closed-minded moronic ditto-heads here... It's the (lack of)intelligence of these people that I am surprised at...
Ohj, wait, I've got a real topic for us to debate in this forum: How bad was Ronald Reagan for this country, & how has his brand of 'conservative individualism' ruined this country?
Now that is the better topic to debate, because it is something real... it isn't based on opinion, but based on the FACT that Mr. Reagan was nothing but a niggah, his real parents were niggahs, & his children (all but his son Michael, who apparently, was, somehow, born WITH the braincells his father lacked...) were all niggahs too!!
begin debationg now... losers...
Love ya all,
michael
PS look up my ISP... Tell me what it tells you about me... I'm interested in knowing.... Are those famous 'FOX Police' of O'reilly's going to come & get me now, or what? lol... None of you jagoffs knows the first thing about fairness or journalism if, in fact, you find that article anything BUT insulting to Mr. Olbermann... But we already knew all that right?
