On the other hand, if you believe the show has become so doctrinaire its host couldn't think on his feet about a breaking news story that doesn't fit his desired template of evil Chimpy McBush-tlerburton if his life depended on it, then Olbermann's decision to avoid scooping his network rivals makes perfect sense. Recruits With Criminal Records Up 65% In Last Three Years!!!!

The number of waivers granted to Army recruits with criminal backgrounds has grown about 65 percent in the last three years, increasing to 8,129 in 2006 from 4,918 in 2003, Department of Defense records show.

During that time, the Army has employed a variety of tactics to expand its diminishing pool of recruits. It has offered larger enlistment cash bonuses, allowed more high school dropouts and applicants with low scores on its aptitude test to join, and loosened weight and age restrictions.

It has also increased the number of so-called "moral waivers" to recruits with criminal pasts, even as the total number of recruits dropped slightly. The sharpest increase was in waivers for serious misdemeanors, which make up the bulk of all the Army's moral waivers. These include aggravated assault, burglary, robbery and vehicular homicide.

The number of waivers for felony convictions also increased, to 11 percent of the 8,129 moral waivers granted in 2006, from 8 percent.

Suicide van bomb shakes Baghdad

The explosion set fire to dozens of cars parked nearby
A van crammed with explosives has exploded near a college in western Baghdad, killing at least 16 people.
The van exploded in Iskan, a poor area with a large Shia population but where Shia and Sunni live and study together.

At least 45 people were injured in the attack, which reportedly took place in a car park between the college and a large food warehouse.

Correspondents say this is the first substantial bombing on the west side of the river this year.

Elsewhere in Iraq, the US military said one of its soldiers was killed in combat in Anbar province.

Regular attacks

The College of Economic Science educates Iraqis from a range of backgrounds, with some Christians alongside Shia and Sunni students.

The blast, shortly before 1000 local time (0700 GMT) destroyed one house and severely damaged others, police said.

The Associated Press reported that a booby-trapped ambulance was also found near the scene of the blast.

The attack is the latest in a string of deadly incidents in Baghdad.

On Monday a series of car bombs in markets in the centre of the Iraqi capital killed at least 76 people and wounded 164.

Thousands of extra US troops are heading to the Iraqi capital to bolster Iraqi forces in a "surge" against militants and bombers.

The Olbermann-lovers have difficulties in seeing Olbermann as he really is. They like to create elaborate fantasies about him. As has been pointed out here, when the Nazi salute photo came out, the Olbermann fan blogs were filled with accusations that it never happened, that the writer and photographer engaged in an elaborate attempt to "swiftboat" Keith and that the photograph had been photoshopped. Then Keith went on the Tonight show and laughed about making such an offensive gesture with Jay Leno. Classy KO. Classy. Oh yeah, Heil Hitler salutes are comedy genius. Not.

Then when Jossip wrote that he had taken Katy Tur to the Al Gore film premiere, and one of his co-workers confirmed that they were dating to Jossip and filled in the Jossip blog owner on who she was (2005 graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara and the daughter of a former co-worker of Keith's), the Keith fanatics cooked up an even more elaborate fantasy about the relationship. Why he wouldn't be interested in such a young girl! No way would he have any interest at all in a 20-year old girl. Keith liked more "mature" women. Based on what, we have no idea, but there you go. Why one even posted what they imagined was a phone conservation between Katy's father as he asked Keith to show Katy the sights of New York City, purey as a father figure of course, and as a favor to her dad. But then came Keith's admission that he was living with Ms. Tur. And one would presume that in spite of Keith's "performance" issues, that this is not a plutonic relationship since he calls her his girlfriend. So there went their theory that Keith wouldn't be interested in a woman just out of her teens. But was there ever any acknowledgement from the Olbyists that they ahd been WRONG yet again about the off-air Keith? Of course not. They aren't capable of such self-reflection. Time and time again they've been confronted with the truth about his on-air versus off-air behaviors and by now, it ought to have dawned on them that a great deal about what they've projected on to Keith Olbermann as being really like is totally wrong. But you'll never get them to acknowledge that.

The latest fantasy was over the Anderson Cooper attacks. When people pointd out that Anderson Cooper had been around the globe countless times to cover stories and was in fact a "real" journalist, unlike the ex-sports guy Keith, they just swore he "can't" go into the field to report stories because of mysterious physical ailments, yet they can't seem to quite adequately explain how it is that he can fly to L.A. to do talk shows or to Florida to attend Spring Training yet can't fly to cover a real news story in the field. Those sorts of contradictions don't seem to bother them in the least.

Yes, but what Benson is referring to is the fact that the Chicks are way down in popularity with the loyal CW fan base-- those that listen to CW on the radio and attend concerts. Many country stations don't play Chicks music anymore and aren't about to start just because the Chicks collected some hardware doled out as a political statement. The Chicks cancelled concerts in the following cities on their most recent tour:

Tampa, FL
Sunrise, FL
Des Moines, IA
Knoxville, TN
Fargo, ND

At other venues, seating was reconfigured to theater seating to accomodate smaller crowds and some venues were relocated to smaller sites.

To be fair, the Chicks did sell out their first show in eight minutes and had to add a second show-- in Toronto, Canada. That tells you as much as you need to know.

Crysler is struggling because of their lack of concern for quality, not "overpaid Union Worker"

I personally swore off Crysler products 5 years ago when my Intrepid kept blowing it's water pump every 30,000 miles or so (a $700 repair). Crysler would never admitted there was a problem, but I know from other reliable sources that this was common - one of the many 'bugs' that they built into their cars. The dismal prices ot their used cars reflects this philosophy.

Since then I had probably been personally responsible for the lost sales of at least 10 Crysler vehicles.

Their's was the typical American business disease so prevalent today; Short term profits over quality or service!

My company is actually in direct competition with a unionized company that has been laying off union workers EVERY quarter. You Dems don't seem to see the corruptness in the unions that drive product prices up to a level that makes the mother company collapse.

Live in your little communist world, it makes more unemployed democrat voters. Chrysler did not collapse from weaker products... its from overpriced products.... years in the making.

This is another example of a liberal lie. There is no such thing as cutting funding in Washington for any program. The only thing that is reduced is the pace at which the spending goes up. For example if the government "cuts funding" for midnight basketball, that means the spending increase in the program for this year will only go up by 8% instead of 10%. Who "ate crow" when OJ was acquitted? It was simple a miscarriage of justice.

The justice system is an imperfect animal and is supposed to work off creating "reasonable doubt", something that certainly seems possible in the Libby case.

Most of us are watching the Libby case somewhat closely to try to get a clearer picture of what was going on behind closed doors in the run up to the war, and not in a rabid desire to see a lower level official convicted. Guilt or innocence in Libby's case will not change that.

The tune of Olbermann will take a 180 degree turn if Libby is found not guilty. Keith with the help of Slippery will explain how this was a trial only about Libby lying, not about Rove, Cheney or the Bush administration. It will be declared that nothing was learned and all was a waste. The exact opposite will happen if Libby is found guilty. The whole Bush administration will be painted and found guilty. Joe Wilson will be elevated to national treasure. Fitzgerald is seen as a hero by liberals (remember Fitzmas?).
