And yes, Jeffy, I definitely served. And yes Jeffy, I know exactly what war is, as well as what bombs are for that matter. I was stationed for a year at one of the biggest Vietnam War bombing bases for North Vietnam in Tahkli, Thailand, during the Vietnam war. The roar of several hundred planes taking off every morning was something to behold. Some didn't come back. On top of all that, my father is a veteran of three wars. I even visited him in Saigon in 1971. All of This might have something to do with why I am not as impressed with big bombs and military solutions the way you people who have never served seem to be so starry eyed about.

Don't try to explain to me what war is, because you can't begin to comprehend what I know about it, "moabs" aside!

March 21, 2007 -- Gov. Corzine admits he's spent a lot money on his former squeeze, Carla Katz. But he won't say how much and what for, insisting it's private.

During his 2005 run for governor of New Jersey, it came out that Corzine had given Katz a $470,000 interest-free loan. He later forgave the loan - and paid $160,000 in gift taxes Katz then owed.

Now comes word that Katz recently paid $1.1 million for a luxury apartment, just two floors below one the governor owns. She also recently began extensive renovations on a country house estimated to cost at least $500,000. And she's spending $44,000 a year to send her two kids to out-of-state private school.

All this on yearly pay of $102,000.

Then there's her law-school tuition. The Newark Archdiocese has launched a probe into whether there's any link between the generous scholarship awarded Katz by Seton Hall Law School and the nearly $1 million Corzine gave to the university. (Seton Hall denies any link.)

Corzine won't discuss the gifts, except hypothetically - sounding just like O.J. Simpson in that "If I Did It" book. What's clear, though, is that he wasn't telling the whole truth when he supposedly told "all" about his ex-girlfriend in '05.

Ordinarily none of this would matter. Corzine is entitled to a private life. But Katz isn't just any ex-girlfriend. She's president of Local 1034 of the Communications Workers of America - which represents fully half of the state government's unionized workers. And she just got finished negotiating a landmark labor agreement with the state.

Here's where things really get interesting: The agreement provides for hefty wage hikes, in return for the union's first-ever givebacks. That suggests the union got no favoritism from the gov. But Katz is calling on her members to reject the deal.

It gets even better. The deal was negotiated by Corzine aide David Beckett, who worked for the firm of lawyer Barry Szaferman - who, in turn, is listed as the agent for the company that bought . . . Katz's apartment.

That Jon Corzine and Carla Katz won't talk isn't surprising. But that they fail to grasp the blatant conflict of interest inherent in this situation is astounding.

Actually Cecelia, it actually distresess me a little that you think I ever implied a comparison between Janet and any of thoise tyrants. I don't believe I ever did that, partially because I have mostly tried to avoid WWII analogies because I don't think they are at all relevant to today's situation. Some have brought up such analogies to me in the past, and I can't remember exactly what I might have said in response.

However, one exception on my part is when I mentioned in my 3/16 post that I believed people like Jeff would have been the same kind of people that blindly followed Hitler in and before WWII Germany. I was expressly referring to Jeff, and not anyone else on this board, and I stand behind that.

In looking back, I see that Sharon took offense to that remark, and that distresses me a little as well, because I respect Sharon, and in no way did I mean that remark as applying to her, or anyone like her. I consider Sharon very reasonable.

That in a nutshell, is probably why most philosophy classes advise against using WWII metaphors at all.

In Janet's case, I made what was intended to be a light hearted quip implying she was a 'groupee' to Johnny, but I certainly was not prepared for how offended she was about that, and therefore I didn't take her susequent replies very seriously. If you noticed, I DID actually apologize for that after it occured to me that she really had been offended. There was also that 'humanity' thing which I think got overblown too. Overall, I respect Janet, but I wish she wasn't so sensitive.

1) - Tax cuts for the wealthy, even though we are fighting a war we are not even paying for.

3) - Pushing for things like TORTURE, for God's sake! I never thought I'd see an administration in MY country defend or resort to such things. Were supposed to be the good guys. For some reason, his base rabidly supports him in this endearvor.

I could plenty more individual examples of the above and break doen those three into many more examples, but you should get the point. This man was re-elected with 51% of the vote, that means 49% of the voting public didn't vote for him. A sizable percentage of that 51% simply voted for what they percieved to be the lesser of two evils, or what they might have described as two extremes. The 2000 vote was even closer, not to mention that he actually lost the popular vote.

I can't see where this president has made a single attempt to bridge the gap between parties, instead he has done everything one could imagine to worsen our divide. 'Partanship' to him has always meant "go along with me or you are an obstructionist". I'm 55 years old and I don't recall any time in my lifetime where the political divide was as bad as it is today.

There are times in the last six years that I have wondered why we even have a Congress, which is SUPPOSED to be a co-equal branch of Government.
