"COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN" (8:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. ET)
Host: Keith Olbermann
Topics/Guests:
Stockholm Syndrome "describes the behavior of kidnap victims who, over time, become sympathetic to their captors. The name derives from a 1973 hostage incident in Stockholm, Sweden. At the end of six days of captivity in a bank, several kidnap victims actually resisted rescue attempts, and afterwards refused to testify against their captors."
I think I may be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome because after watching Keith Olbermann on Countdown for six straight weeks I found myself agreeing with him last night. Uh oh!
#5 IRAQ WAR: Last night I found myself in the odd position of agreeing with Olbermann on the question of "what the hell is a War Czar and why do we need one now". This really strikes me as the dumbest thing I've heard coming out of Washington in a long time. I was there in DC yesterday for a conference (the reason this Countdown Roundup is late is because I was stuck on the tarmac for hours last night due to tornado warnings in New York and was too tired to stomach KO when I finally got home).
Wolfie and PJ Crowley of the far-left Center for American Progress came on for a bit to nod their heads in agreement as Keith asked "questions".
OLBYPOCRISY ALERT - Keith cited Intel Dump but qualified his source by identifying the site as a blog saying "not to take these things too seriously". As regular readers know, Olbermann lifts material from blogs EVERY DAY, rarely with attribution, and appears to take the claims of these blogs quite seriously even through much of the information is false or misleading and his sources are highly partisan and have zero journalistic credibility. So we know what kind of bloggers Keith does take seriously; what kind does he NOT take seriously? Take a quick look at Intel Dump blogger Phillip Carter's bio.
#4 - GonzoGate - John Conyers favorite Constitutional law expert once again calls for Bush's impeachment. Now he's back on the warrant-less wiretaps. Nothing new to see here...move along..move along.
#4 Wolfowitz - after predicting last week that Wolfowitz would be gone by last Tuesday, Olbermann is now predicting "sunny skies and a firing next week" which can only be good news for Paul Wolfowitz. Olbermann continues to say that "no one" is supporting Wolfowitz yet the White House, once again, came out in support of Wolfowtiz.
One person who you can be sure will NEVER be a guest on Countdown to discuss Paul Wolfowitz and the World Bank is Andrew Young, Jimmy Carter's Ambassador to the UN. As we've said before, Olbermann is presenting an utterly one-sided, highly erroneous account of what's going on with the World Bank. A long-time friend of OlbyWatch directed us to Young's recent appearance on the PBS Newshour where he was interviewed along with a Wolfowitz critic who believes he should leave the World Bank.
You will note that even the Wolfowitz critic agrees that the current controversy has very little to do with the girlfriend, the issue is being used a pretext. Young points out that Wolfowitz originally asked the ethics committee at the World Bank to recuse himself. You understand that game right? They force him to make decisions about his girlfriend, even though he asked to be allowed to recuse himself, and then when he makes his decision they accuse him of being unethical because he has a conflict of interest.
Does anyone think that Andrew Young is a friend of the Bush administration?
Now, head on over to PBS.org and read through the transcript of Young's remarks. As we've been saying here, what this is really all about is bureaucratic resistance to change, fear of Wolfowitz' efforts to to shift more power to African nations and clean up corruption at the World Bank.
ANDREW YOUNG: I think who's on trial here is not Paul Wolfowitz, but that board. In a world where tolerance is required, where women in the Islamic world are the hope of the entire planet, for them to take their prejudices -- which I agree with -- against him on the war in Iraq and resurrect it to try to put it into the World Bank political scene is, in many ways, obscene. It's sort of like Imus referring to these young women on the basketball team and ignoring all of the professional competence and all of the skills and talents that are at stake here. Paul Wolfowitz and Riza Shaha have tremendous things to offer the world. And I think, right now, staid bureaucrats who've been there 25 years bungling in the bank are trying to make him a scapegoat.
and
ANDREW YOUNG: Yes. For me, this is more like the scandal in the United Nations, where when Europe began to feel the influence of new coalitions in the third world threatening their dominance, they sought to get rid of the people who were pulling together these new coalitions.I think the threat is that Paul Wolfowitz is pulling together a third world coalition that, while it doesn't have the money, it controls the markets of the future. And the old colonial routines of running Africa from Europe will no longer apply under Wolfowitz.
#3 GOP Debate - Keith gleefully reports that Republicans are criticizing each in debates and that this is good news for Democrats, that this is a reflection of the Democrats being satisfied with their candidates. Just what we need more campaign analysis from a guy who repeatedly embarrassed his network covering the two debates on MSNBC. John Harwood, having learned his lesson, nods as Keith delivers his pearls of wisdom.
.
#2 Prince Harry not going to Iraq - canned reported from Keith Miller of NBC News
KEEPING TABS - Sophia Loren striptease threat, Bob Schieffer/Tony Snow, DC Idol contest
WPIW - kid with gun, blind guy without a gun, vote fraud now important again
#1 American Idol with Mario Malito who is less "angry" today.
"#4 - GonzoGate - John Conyers favorite Constitutional law expert once again calls for Bush's impeachment. Now he's back on the warrant-less wiretaps. Nothing new to see here...move along..move along."
Actually, this is worth commenting upon. Congress made quite a big deal out of it yesterday and it is a big in that Gonzales testified with people at the DOJ were fine with the president's wiretapping program, when Ashcroft and others were not.
Olbermann, of course, already has the Administratiion guilty of illegal wiretapping and impeached...
But here's some information, very valid, to Olbermann and Turley's discussion, that you did NOT hear and as Mr. Krile would imply, should not even expect to hear on Countdown-- the news show of the future.
As our Doug would argue, Keiths audience doesn't need to be bored by his reporting of all the details. Certainly not the ones outside of Olbermann's narrative, anyway...

Great link Cecelia
Once again....the reality does not match the intended story so the facts are simply not mentioned....
"...per Mr. Comey's testimony, nothing illegal was done, he was never threatened by White House officials, and the President told him to do what he felt was right."
###
This does NOT sound like a new "Saturday Night Massacre" as was breathlessly predicted.
Wrong again, Mr. Olbermann.
Having just read Cecelia's link to that particular opinion piece....it changes nothing in my view. However, it does serve to further my belief that to many defenders of this administration, ethics mean nothing.
Just like the Plame affair, and many others before it, the Gonzalas episode is more about ETHICS than anything else...with competance being a close second.
Some seem to believe that 'legality' is the only issue here....but I strongly disagree!
"Having just read Cecelia's link to that particular opinion piece....it changes nothing in my view. However, it does serve to further my belief that to many defenders of this administration, ethics mean nothing."
Of course not mickey, you're a brainwashed fool filled with hatred who would never let facts 'cloud' your view.
"you're a brainwashed fool with hatred"
The only 'hatred' I have is for the actions of our so called leaders when they allow greed, incompetance, misplaced ideology, and personal loyalty take the place of ethics, competance, and sound nuanced judgment.
Bu$hwipes! HAHA. I firsted AAP again. He's gonna be so pissed. He'll probably want to meet me by the bike racks after sixth period.
Think this will get a mention on tonight's show?
Conservative columnist Ann Coulter has been cleared of wrongdoing in an investigation into whether she violated Florida elections law by voting in the wrong precinct.
My guess would be no...
I miss the quiesce canines.
There's always more to it than neocons let on, eh folks?
"Conservative pundit Ann Coulter has been cleared of allegations that she falsified her Palm Beach County voter's registration and voted illegally — this, after a high-level FBI agent made unsolicited phone calls to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to vouch for Coulter.
The caller wasn't just any G-man. According to PBSO documents, he was Supervisory Special Agent Jim Fitzgerald, of the FBI Academy's Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, Va. — the closest reality gets to the serial-killer catchers on CBS' Criminal Minds..."
"...County Supervisor of Elections Arthur Anderson, meanwhile, decried what he called "FBI intrusion." He referred the Coulter case to PBSO after poll worker Jim Whited originally reported the incident.
"This doesn't bode well in terms of the public's impression that celebrities receive preferential treatment," Anderson said. "I'm curious about how anyone can justify the FBI's intrusion."..."
"...Still, Villa closed the probe April 12 without interviewing Coulter; a Realtor, whose Indian Road address Coulter used; or neighbors of Coulter's Seabreeze homestead..."

KO is an idiot. True enough. But when we have reliably Conservative folks like Joe Scarborough getting sliced and diced by folks on our team then we know we need to put down the brickbats and all get on the same bus. Because if we don't we are going to have a lot of time to moan as the Liberals flush the country down the you-know-whatter. Join me at teamconservative.com and maybe we can get this turned around.
Robert:
Nice write-up considering your travel woes. Yes, NY weather was very bad.
It's a shame Olby is so biased because he might have been a half-way decent reporter.
His show is entertaining, but hard to stomach on a regular basis.
His "List" of democratic guests offers conclusive proof that he is a leftist, political hack.
And since he was the unbridled support of NBC news, we have our own version of Al Jazeera jounalistic values in the corner news offices at 30 Rock.
It's a shame, because I actually like people like Meredith Vierra and the Bagdad war correspondent and a few others.
Olby planet sits in the far-left universe of NBC news, fully sanctioned to do the bidding of the far left news leadership that is NBC news.
I find Olbermann amusing and entertaining, but really need a break from him on occassion.
That's why my heart goes out to you guys at O-watch who keep the light on for the rest of us.
I wish no ill-will on Olby. I just wish he would admit who he really is.
I'm not crazy about this administration. I believe Bush is right on the war on terror, but woefully wrong on the execution of this conflict.
He will probably go down in history as a very poor president unless things to start to change...FAST
L.F.
poor whittle assrat, a witch hunt with no prize. More wasted tax dollars by the dems.
rk,
I think the term you are looking for is "above the law", son...
No skin off my nose: The more she talks the worse you girls appear to the general public...
"Think this will get a mention on tonight's show? Conservative columnist Ann Coulter has been cleared of wrongdoing in an investigation into whether she violated Florida elections law by voting in the wrong precinct."
It was already mentioned on Countdown. Of course, he focused on the idea that something bad had been done to clear here - not that she was cleared (which, in fairness, he did report).
"poor whittle assrat"
People who assume phonetic infantilisms into their writings in the attempt to intensify the vitriol of their attacks are typically really stupid drama queens.
Keith N: on Ann Coulter being cleared: "Think this will get a mention on tonight's show?
News flash! It was already mentioned on last night's show....and that wasn't why she made WPITW!

How sinister BlindDemorat, Ann Coulter has an FBI agent as a character witness for her. Oh no. News flash moron, usually when you are being prosecuted, you get character witness to help your case. There is a new principal in law called innocent until proven guilty. It doesn’t just apply to liberals believe it or not. Prosecutors drop cases when they don't have credible evidence, not because a FBI agent likes the defendent.
I would like to see Mr Cuntler with his rather ample adams apple slit and bleeding to death on the Iraqi's soil.
You're next, O'Leilly.
Everything's going GREAT in America!!
BUSH in '08!!!
Jeff: "You're next O'Leilly"
Will you just look...Jeff is now the official self appointed site monitor....and he's all buddy-wuddy with Robert now.
Kind of reminds you of a third grader, doesn't it? Wait, maybe Jeff IS a third grader!
You're just mad because your buddy patty/bob/nobodycares/anonyloon is gone. Guess you'll have to start responding to your own posts again.....
Jeff, according to you, I WAS AAP...remember?
According to you, I was EVERY other left of center poster on this blog...remember?
It's absolutely amazing you would even have the gall to show your face here anymore after posting nonsense like that!
I guess all the curse words you've used in the last fews days alone doesn't matter...because after all, you're Robert's new buddy-wuddy.
And no...I'm not 'mad'...I could care less...and I doubt if AAP does either.
What's amazing is a proven liar and hypocrite like you keeps showing your face. Now, stop boring me and everybody else and make some more of your posts loaded with all of this "substance" you have harped about, ok? How bout that Sandy Burglar and Pelosi? A couple of doozies.
No Jeff, I'd rather talk about how you accused me of being AAP, and EVERY other pro - Olbermann poster on this board....and how the sheer embarassment of having done that doesn't shame you like it would any normal person? And then you have the nerve to call ME a 'liar'!
Why do you want me to talk about Burger or Pelosi?...I thought this was "Olbermann Watch".
Mickey, do you see the stupidity in your 9:35 post?
No Jeff, there is no 'stupidity' in that post....but I sure do see how you keep hiding from my questions about why you were stupid enough to falsely accuse me of being all these other posters.
Falsy accusing someone of doing something when you don't have one shread of proof is a LIE...Jeff...and that makes you a LIAR!
But keep on hiding and evading...it's exactly what everybody expects from you anyway.
I was right about 99% of the names you and patty were using. Get used to it and hurry up and make one of your posts loaded with "substance" so I can shred it.
Well in fairness Mike, Jeff is what your post at 9:35 is about, so it could be argued that stupidity itself is the subject of your post.
And then you have the nerve to call ME a 'liar'!
Posted by: Mike at May 17, 2007 9:35 PM
Uh, that would be because you have lied many times, as I have seen. Hypocrisy? That's a story for another day.
Is today the day where we all talk like we are in Alice in Wonderland? Sheesh!
Jeff sez: "I was right about 99% of the names you and patty were using."
While I can't speak for 'patty', you were 100% WRONG every time you tried doing that with me!
And as for 'shredding' anything I have posted...you have yet to achieve your first 'shred'.
Jeff, I used to play chess a lot....and I was pretty darned good at it. I learned the game in Germany, where it is almost a national obsession (or at least it was in 1972). One day my brother decided to take up chess as well.....My brother and I played a lot of games of chess before he finally won a game. His tenacity was amazing.
Your tenacity amazes me as well, Jeff. It's the only thing you have. You can be wrong 100 times in a row,...yet being wrong never deters you in the slightest. You come right back for the 101st time!
However, unlike chess...when you lose an exchange on this discussion board, you can always just CLAIM that you 'won', cover your eyes and ears, and go on to the next round....the way you do repeately.
As for actually winning an argument (or 'debunking' someone, as you love to proclaim), I guess you figure if you keep coming at people long enough, you will finally actually 'win' a round.
>Your tenacity amazes me as well, Jeff.
With Jeff tenacity = a short memory.
But here's some INFORMATION, VERY VALID, to OLBERMANN and Turley's discussion, that you did NOT hear and as Mr. Krile would imply, should not even expect to hear on Countdown-- the news show of the future.

I love it when those who criticize a newsman (who, for some time now, clearly infuses HIS opinion in HIS newscast) counters by providing a LINK to a conservative MSM paper with the words "OPINION" and "EDITORIAL" in the link (this to aid us & Olbermann's "REPORTING of all the details") Priceless.
RUMPsfeld, gone...Scooter, gone...Goodthang, gone...McNUTty, gone...Gonzo soon to follow...I think they call this a "domino effect."
Chicken Blogger, I love it when those who defend a hack pretending to be a newsman ignores the fact that the OPENLY OPINION piece uses actual quotes.
From CBS news@: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/05/16/
politics/main2812045_page2.shtml :
"Under questioning by Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., Comey said he was not threatened by Vice President Dick Cheney or other White House officials who disagreed with him on the legality of the eavesdropping program.
Comey recalled that after the bedside incident he started to offer his resignation and was persuaded to wait a few days until Ashcroft could resign with him. "Mr. Ashcroft's chief of staff asked me something that meant a great deal to him, and that is that I not resign until Mr. Ashcroft was well enough to resign with me," Comey said.
On March 12 at their daily briefing of the president, Mr. Bush asked Comey and Mueller for separate private conversations on Justice's concerns about the eavesdropping program. There, Comey said, Mr. Bush agreed to do "the right thing."
"We had the president's direction to do what we believed, what the Justice Department believed, was necessary to put this matter on a footing where we could certify to its legality," Comey said of the period after those private meetings. "We did that."
What we had from KO was the heart tugging soap opera version gleaned from Jim Comey's testimony. The actual testimony to the facts of the case by Jim Comey just don't comport with the BDS version.
We have to give CBS a modicum of credit for at least mentioning at the very end that all the melodrama they hyped came down to nothing.
Grammie
Is the same douchebag still running this site or is it a new douchebag?
We can add two more Bush administration names to the rapidly-expanding "coulda, woulda, shoulda, but ultimately didn't resign in indignation" list: John Ashcroft and Robert Mueller. During this week's creepy testimony from former Deputy Attorney General James Comey about how Alberto Gonzales and Andy Card made a late night visit to the hospital room of a critically ill Ashcroft to pressure him to sign-off on the renewal of the NSA spy program, came the news that Ashcroft was so uncomfortable with the program he considered resigning. But didn't. According to Comey, Top G-Man Mueller also considered resigning over the domestic surveillance program. But didn't. If only doing the right thing had the same lure as $400,000, the resignation bonus that finally got Paul Wolfowitz to call it quits.
The dems caved.
