Ever since the world learned on CNN that Rosie O'Donnell was leaving The View, rumors have been swirling around the daytime diva. Yesterday, Roger Friendman of FoxNews.com reported that NBC, along with CBS, was in the running to sign O'Donnell:
Rosie O'Donnell is walking away from "The View" the undisputed winner of what has been a nightmare situation for ABC. Rosie already has had offers from NBC and CBS for daytime shows to counter "The View," sources say.
In today's New York Daily News, Richard Huff reports that the cable television networks are also in competition to sign O'Donnell (including Fox News Channel) but that MSNBC makes the most sense sending shudders through the OlbyLoon Sisterhood.
Cable news insiders yesterday suggested she could talk to the Fox News Channel. An actual deal with Fox News might be a long shot, though, because that would put O'Donnell on the same channel as her nemesis Bill O'Reilly. However, giving O'Donnell a prime-time talk show on a news channel isn't such a wacky idea, says Syracuse University popular culture Prof. Robert Thompson. "If I were MSNBC, I would really be courting her to go up against O'Reilly," Thompson said. "For so long, they've been looking for a different perspective."
If you are saying that Rosie will replace Olbermann on MSNBC, you are out of your mind. She may follow Countdown but not replace it. DREAM ON
Are you kidding? MSDNC would love to put Rosie up against O'Reilly. Countdown to No Ratings is getting destroyed every night. Why would MSDNC want to fight for third place with losers on CNN and Headline news when they could capture 2nd place behind O'Reilly? Rosie would pull the same zombies that followed her to the Spew. Rosie attracts the left wing couchasoraus rexes that Olbermann can't. Olbermann only attracts the left wing Star Wars nerds.

(Be afraid... Be very afraid...)
anon 5:56 PM wrote "If you are saying that Rosie will replace Olbermann on MSNBC, you are out of your mind. She may follow Countdown but not replace it. DREAM ON"
I am not SAYING anything dopey. I am linking two stories that both talk about Rosie signing with NBC. One of the stories quotes a Robert Thompson speculating MSNBC ought to put Rosie on against O'Reilly.
We report, you decide - in this case whether this seems plausible.
I think if NBC signed RO to do a talk show, the show would air on CNBC or MSNBC. If she were to air on MSNBC, they would move Olby's show. It wouldn't take much to bring in higher ratings than Keith Anally draws. And she would draw an even larger audience of far left-wing asshats and 9/11 conspiracy theorists than Olby does.
Anyone who says that this should happen has taken one too many blows to the head.
1) K.O. just signed a brand-new four-year contract. There is NO WAY that MSNBC is either going to eat the contract or move him to another slot after shelling out that much bread.
2) You keep saying the KO gets clobbered in the ratings WITHOUT acknowledging that vast stretches of the country DO NOT GET MSNBC on basic cable. CNN and Fox News are constantly available as part of basic service, but MSNBC is often sent to the "upper-tier" digital packages or not offered at all.
3) Rosie is just as polarizing to the left as she is to the right - most of us can't stand her because she is shrill and buys into WAY MORE conspiracy theories than all but the most whacked-out people. She can't work in "mainstream" because she appeals to the fringe.
4) NBC as a total entity is bleeding cash like crazy. The network's programming is dead last, it has few viable hits and is asking several shows to retool or take cuts just to stay afloat. In this environment (and taking into account the money just spent on Tiki Barber and Keith), it makes no financial sense to take on ANOTHER big-name-with-equally-big-salary.
Anon 8:03 PM makes good points - and no one here is suggesting this is GOING to happen - but the math is really simple if Keith has a four-year contract worth maybe 10-12mm then NBC would simply to have to calculate that Rosie would be more than make up for the cost of taking Keith off the air.
But they don't have to do that anyway. They could offer Rosie a package which includes daytime production opportunities , NBC Dateline specials on topics of her choice plus a cable slot of some kind. That might mean four nights a week at 9 PM (bye, bye Joe). Or they might just move Keith to 9 PM not fire him.
I was more interested in your statement #2 because it sounds like you work in the business or otherwise have some first-hand knowledge.

I am not doubting you but can you provide more details? Is there any kind of charts or maps that can explain this in greater detail?
Yes Robert you are right and might I add that all Cable companies have websites with their tier packages on the site. So I think it should be very easy for Anon to show us.
Annon is partly right. I stayed in a motel in Georgia last year that didn't have MSNBC. And they didn't have FNC either. Only CNN. YIKES!
If one is unfortumate enough to live in the bible belt, MSNBC is NOT carried on SuddenLink or Cableone. However FOX Noise is carried. Had to get Direct TV to get MSNBC... which I did.
Fox News is NOT offered in my basic sattelite service, I have to pay extra for it and it's worth every penny....

I wouldn't watch The View at gunpoint, but it seems Rosie did a lot to energize that show. The ratings sure went up.
I think a battle between O'Reilly and O'Donnell would be terrific. FOX could promo it with a reinactment of a scene from the movie The Quiet Man.
They could have O'Reilly's John Wayne character picking up Rosie's Maureen O'Hara character and trying to throw her on the bed, but maybe pulling out his back in the process or something.
It could work..

Jeff can only function with the "official White House" news station.
Guess what news station is only permitted in Air Force One ?

MSNBC will be hosting the Republican debates with a cohost who explicitly stated tonight that all the candidates would be there "LYING" tomorrow.
The FOX finger pointing stuff.... can you say... OVAH....
I knew you could... :D
"says Syracuse University popular culture Prof. Robert Thompson"
Oh my god, this guy is still there? HE taught ME in media studies a thousand years ago!
He's smart and knowledgeable for the most part, but ultraconservative and increasingly out-of-touch with shifting trends. Which, I guess, appeals to his peers, who are exactly the same.

Well, Prof Thompson said: '"If I were MSNBC, I would really be courting her to go up against O'Reilly," Thompson said. "For so long, they've been looking for a different perspective."'
Sounds plausible to me. You get someone who sent The View's ratings through the roof to go up against your big 8pm competition.
If that sounds "out of touch with shifting trends", you must be the person who has been making the programming decisions for MSNBC...
Mitt Romney has stated that his favorite book is by L R Hubbard.
Add scientology to the reasons he won't be president !
Wrong again fat ass.

How wrong you are, as usual. When I need a change of pace, I grab some Beck or some Savage. You know, REAL news. If I need a laugh I try to catch Softball. When he starts slobbering all over himself I usually go back to work.
How eclectic ! Fox, Beck and Savage !
You may be the only one left in American not knowing it's all the same schlock !
Where is tonight's Countdown episode review for May 2nd 2007 ?!?!?
Judging by this news story, MSNBC should forget about replacing Keith with Rosie at 8 p.m. and think about replacing him with Mel Kiper Jr.:

I think it would be safer to say you are the only one to think that!
Your site kinda sucks, Keith Watchers?
You really need to get a life, countdown is really a very informative show. I guess some people are just born to hate.
