Seems that Basra, absent any political structure or effective government, is now effectively controlled by competing Iraq-war lords. The city has effectively fallen into a Taliban-like condition.

That seems to me to raise two (2) issues:

#1

If the US "surge" is having an effect in Baghdad, it is likely to be temporary unless the political situation is resolved. Even the Bush Administration has admitted that political progress is stalled.

#2

Because of #1, the US has two (2) options:

(a)

Retaining a significant force, at the risk of more US deaths and injuries and at the sole expense of the American taxpayer for an indefinite, but very, very lengthy time.

(b) Give up on Iraq being the shining beacon of democracy in the Middle East and impose a military government.

Actually, we're probably faced with (a) and (b).

And, despite the exhaustion and over-stretching of our military, we are going to have to "rev up" our presence in the true trouble-spot, Afghanistan. By territory, over 50% is back in Taliban control.

Looks like we're in one terrific Bush/Neo-Con quagmire, and the "Surge Is Working," the "Surge is Working," RNC/FOX talking points are beginning to ring as hollow as they are.

I realize this lacks the importance to the Righties of Olbermann's skin hue, but I felt we should at least throw this out to some of the intelligent reader and posters on this site.

Ah, patriotism....the happiness derived that there are LESS American troops dying in Iraq and there is military success in helping a people attain freedom of religion and thought in the face of the alternative....totalitarianism in the form of radical islam......That happiness is unatainable by people like Olbermann, Trent and Mr. blank-FLUCKER.......

Oh me oh my.....what a sad state of affairs.....20% of the population has to abandon the desire for freedom for all because that is at odds with their personal political agenda. The rest of us will just be glad Iraq is less violent and continue to support the policy that made it possible.

This is the most insane post I have ever read on OW. This seems to be a talking point for the right. So anyone who looks at Iraq progress skeptically or suspiciously or realistically obviously hates freedom?
The problem is NOT the military. Of course with military presence violence can be contained or at least displace for a while(green zone anyone?). And remember the last time a small victory was declared? (a certain presidential candidate in a certain Baghdad market)
The real test is what is happening politically.

And by the way, someone ask John Gibson how we won the war back in ‘05 and now again in ‘07.

Looking at "Iraq progress skeptically", does and should come about without an invitation...

How about giving the slightest suggestion that you're looking at it a bit hopefully too. After all, wouldn't be it be nice for them and us if a political solution as well as a military one comes about?

As a bit of reassurance....this wouldn't change the fact that serious mistakes were made by the Bush Adm. or change an argument about any policy that has ensued from the war.

What I find dismaying is the suggestion of a constant struggle to find a cloud in the silver lining without first giving off any indication that of the slightest bit pleasure over even the smallest of good news.

You're going to have to get some good writers to make Capon's material ring true.

There's an off-kilter quality to it. It sounds like something Capon thinks real guys say and real guys do.

We've all seen female impersonator such as drag queens, but Capon is a male male impersonator.

I think actor Tony Randall could evoke that pathos and would have been perfect for the role... Too bad he's dead.
