I am going to take some time out from the critical work I do here each day - making the world safe from the most dangerous man in journalism today - and waste it by discussing the International Olympic Committees recent decision to allow athletes and coaches to blog at the Beijing games this summer and such trivialities as the free speech implications, Chinese censorship of blogs and how issues like Darfur and Taiwan might come into play.
If you are not able to tune in live between 3 and 4 PM ET today you can listen via their web site once they get the podcast up at the NPR Talk of the Nation web site.

One of the other scheduled guests is supposed to be Tommie Smith who knows a little bit about what happens when Olympic athletes engage in free expression.
UPDATE: It's turned into media day for me with three different media appearance on three different topics. The web audio of the NPR Talk of the Nation broadcast is online at NPR.org I am quoted in a story on the new Internet Safety Technical Task Force. And yet another story on the battle between bloggers and journalists on PBS.org.
Critical Work ? ROFLMAO... Your check from Faux news may not be complete, but I am sure they will still pay you... I mean since you have NO ads.. nor request for ads.. What is your reason for wasting all this money on something so insignificant How about coming clean ,, I know that is something most flying monkeys do not like to do
Geez,, this place gets less traffic than Johnny Two Cents place does... Does the check come from Roger Ailes or Rupert Murdoch ?

Yes, but you understand that is exactly what the Gang of Four have long wanted? A place at which they can put forth opinions which, however derivative and trite they may be, can go unchallenged. Stroking their tender egos is far more important than a vibrant exchange of ideas. I am sure when this cite becomes but a distant memory, they will still be pleased that the ideological purge was a success. The end of OW: Cecelia, Grammie, Cee and Jeff/Royal King/Olby S***s win!

Wow.... I doubt even Patsy or Why would characterize their 10,000 posts under 150 identities as "a vibrant exchange of ideas"...
This site will flatline when Olbermann gets yanked for being enough of a left wing bomb thrower that even other lefties see what an idiot he is. I suspect that Robert Cox and Johnny Dollar will give us updates on how Olbermann is doing under psychiatric care, drooling all over himself and continually repeating, "Resign, resign, resign,etc..."

The gang of four won't "flatline" like the 10,000 will if the site ever disappears. There is a scene in the The Passion depicting Satan horribly shrieking when he realizes he is defeated by the sacrifice of Christ. I can picture a similar style of shrieking if this site ever converts to a new system, or "flatlines." (Don't read into that too much; there is no intent to make Robert into a savior.)
Come to think of it, there may be a similar shrieking at the Clinton residence next week. Is Olbermann still explaining his Keith number for the race? I don't know if Rachel Maddow has changed her position or not but after the last debate, she seemed unimpressed with Obama and expressed that it is the usual politics which will un-inspire the party.
1. The purpose of the 10,000 is to come to OW and act like a jerk.
2. If that venue is taken away, the mission of the 10,000 is aborted. (We have seen evidence of the anger when banning occurs.)
3. What will happen if there is zero opportunity for being disruptive? Shrieking like the devil. (vivid description if you saw the movie.)
4. Speaking of shrieking like the devil (transitional idea), the Clintons are about to lose. We know how much they love to lose.
5. What happened to the Keith number? That was before the switch to Obama, oh I forgot.
6. Rachel Maddow- Obama supporter- not happy with Obama. Should have been a new paragraph, but after all, it is was just a bovine statement. Don't feel like you have to respond.
I swear I did not see the Drudge Report until 1 minute ago. How ironic.
-"Just like I said before, much to Bovine's embarrassment, Butt Face cannot ban me."
Let me clarify the banning statement. Banning occurs, but it is only temporary because there are ways around it. When the banned commenters reappear, they make comments like yours.
-"at least until Butt Face forks out another penny to upgrade The Crapper. Then see what happens. Say "hello" to the echo chamber."
I expect that the upgrade will occur. If not, my life goes on. My level of happiness with my existence as well as my purpose in life remains the same. If it does occur and becomes an echo chamber, why do you care?
-"It took you, what? something like 3 days to "register" at the baba site."
I have no idea to what you are referring. I think this site came into existence in 2004. I started commenting in fall of 2006.
-All of that is incidental, former BU$HWIPES turned into Neo-McCainians is the current laugh shtick.
The president of Bush ends. Support for a new one begins. I gave my perspective of McCain at a time when he was considered finished, probably even by you. I noticed your failure to respond to the fact that Rachel Maddow expressed discontent with Obama after the debate. But, I guess that may lead to vibrant debate.

With just basic monitoring (SOP for most comment boards) the site has switched from being a circus/playground for the insane clown posse who didn't have a shred of respect for the site, for Bob and Johnny, or for their "loyal opposition", let alone "a vibrant exchange of ideas". That "gang" tried every shenanigan in the book to trivialize the comment board and to muscle the place away from its owner and turn it into a graffiti scrawled stage for derisive "performance art".
I was always particularly bemused by their comments about not giving a fig about Olbermann, and not bothering to read Johnny's blog, but only being here in order to argue politics (commandeer the discussion). Yet 90% of their posts were devoted solely to upbraiding RK. Oh yeah, they aren't trolls...
The moment of truth came with Clucker, himself, admitted that the site wouldn't make it without some sort of structure, and admitted THAT only to try and gain info on where Bob was going with it.
If there's one thing folks should learn here it's to NEVER over estimate the maturity, intelligence, or cordiality of the Insane Clown Posse. Certainly never entertain for one second the notion that they are benignly intentioned.
If the site "flatlines", it's flatlines... Bob has said that the trolls just numbered two or three people. Obviously, when one troll is writing 6000 posts a year, anonymously and with a myriad of nom du jours, the site is alive via artificial means in the first place. It was time to pull that plug and to see if the patient can function on his own. It had to happen. Again, as a charter member of the clown posse said, the site wasn't going to make it the way it was going.
Not to wear out the patient analogy.... but though OW is in a period of transition, it's a much healthier and geniune place, and the prognosis is good.
Excuce me again. Answering my comment about Rachel may lead to "a vibrant exchange of ideas."
"Obviously, when one troll is writing 6000 posts a year, anonymously and with a myriad of nom du jours, the site is alive via artificial means in the first place." (Cecelia)
That seems to have escaped our commenter. The prognosis IS good. That is why we hear the death rattle of the posse, whose prognosis is not so good.
I'll just answer myself about Rachel Maddow and the segment of the population she represents with this analysis. The disillusioned progressives have Nadar to turn to. McCain is going to lose the fringe of the conservatives that will never trust him enough to vote for him. Seems to be a wash for the fringe on both sides.
Who is left? Conservatives who say they will hold their noses and vote for McCain (I think McCain's mother said that about voting for her son; if she did, what a hoot), moderate Republicans who like McCain, die hard democrats who will stay loyal to the party, moderate democrats who like Obama, and the fight for the independents. Will McCain get any Huckabee supporters? National polls show a tight race.

OBAMESSIAH!
Cee,
I was surprised by Rachel Maddow's apparent defection from the Obama camp after the debate. I didn't follow the debate that well, but she perceived Obama as promoting the usual politics and said that the party is not going to be fired up anymore. She listened critically, as someone actually looking for change, and apparently didn't find it.
This is the nature of Obama's campaign, Sharon. It is very shallow and narrow in both history and specific policy.
He is hoping for identification politics..."vote for the first serious black candidate." Period. For the thoughtful and rational, this eventually does not work because then it only really is about the person, a cult of personality, if you will.
This is a political tactic and has been used previously.
I am glad to see someone on the left finally express such objectivity....Obama has been given a pass for too long simply because of the id politics and "hope/change" mantra.

You're going to have to characterize the vast majority of blogs that do allow comments as being "hate sites" then, partner, because they all purge comments for various reasons.
If a site that counters a particular person's political agenda, makes it a hate site, then you're going to have qualify any anti-Bush site as such.
How about OW being a hate idiots site? In which case, you'd qualify.

That depends. Is it a Democrat? Is a Democrat in a dress or a Democrat who is not white? Is it a Democrat who is running for office? Is a Democrat running for office who might stand a chance of being elected (Sorry, Ralph...)?
What comes with it? Do I get some nice medals, a big ring or maybe ceremonial robes?
It's a very exclusive club. Of course, no one else wants to join, but the exclusivity should be price enough!
The far right and racisim. Not everyone on the far right is completly racist. First off that has to be made clear and certainly not everone in the more moderate portion of the republican party is a racist. However, this portion of the party seems to be shrinking as the far right every day seems to gain more control of the party.
Now an intersting thing that is happening in this election cycle, is that the far right are attacking Clinton for being a racist. The thing that is ignored by those archetects of the southern stagedy (bugs bunny sp) is that Clinton, made a reference to Jesse Jackson's win in South Carolina. Lets compare that to Republican actions in South Carolina.
IN 2000 after stunning victories over George W Bush, John McCain looked well on his way to the party's nomination, but then somethign happend. A push poll was going around asking (playing on racism)
whether voters would vote for McCain, if he had fatherd a black baby out of wedlock. Suddenly the tight race began to shift in Dubya's favor as racist Republicans offended at the very notion of a illegitamet black baby as the child of a president promplty voted for George Bush. The McCain camp was so troubled by what happend that they thought of rejecting this racist ideolog completl and joining the democratic party.
Now it seems there is another issue of african garb, with Obama and charges of racisim. the right wing leaning drudge claims it came from a Clinton staffer. Now no evidence has been presented that this is true but the right swallows it up. (Again this goes back to filters and about how right wingers will take the gospel from far right sources as mother's milk.)Now again, this is the far right eager to excuse any racist statements that are made by members of their party by claiming "But Clinton does it too" Again with no proof and no that that even if it were true it is no excuse to continue with the racial attacks.
You are good! Glad to have you on the side of what is good, decent and right in the world and in our nation.
Thank you! I sincerely appreciate that.

Any evidence the McCain black baby thing came from a BUSH STAFFER?
Can someone tell me the difference between Nixon trying to get elected by allegedly appealing to the prejudices of southern white people, from a former president trying to get his wife elected by appealing to the prejudices of southern white people?
Yes, but it is a rather hard argument to understand. It would just give you a headache, and you'd still be ignorant.

Well, take twos aspirinis and try...
More on the far right and race. Before I begin writing this I must point out that one expects the right, particularly the far right’s response to be rage in virtually all cases of disagreement. Some will outright attack some will surprise you and be down right reasonable. Note: That is the exception.
Also be prepared for the fact that the far will never change their mind. If you respond to their posts, one must do so with the knowledge that you are arguing for any reasonable people in the middle who might be reading. Lets say it again, the far right will never ever change their mind. Only their tactics.
Now in cases of race, the pattern I have noticed is that the first tactic by the right is that Clinton does it so we can too. If you point out, one, that far worse examples have been perpetuated by republicans in the past. they will ask you for evidence ignoring there own lack of evidence in the Clinton matter.
Far more egregious however, is ignoring the most important point in determining which party is the more racist (aside from the fact that one party ran a women, an African American and a Hispanic and one did not) is how effective such strategies are within each party. When Bill Clinton made a passing reference to jesse Jackson the result seems to have been that Democrats shifted more and more to Barack Obama. When Clinton’s may or ma not have alluded to Barack Being A Muslim there is no evidence of a shift in support with Democrats in fact the opposite seems to keep occurring. However, when Karl Rove (we’ll say may or may not to be fair) Ran a push poll on McCain suggesting he had an illegitimate black child. Republicans were suddenly voting for Bush in droves.
Finall here is the most important piece. The far right will accuse you of hypocrisy for not denouncing Clinton (even if ou say ok they were wrong) But will never ever, ever, ever, denounce Karl Rove For what he did to McCain. Then it is politics or an ubstanstiated allegation Which is Why MCCain almost switched parties Cause he too was convinced of Rove’s innocence.

First of all, be aware that the left will make certain admission while trying to seem like they are not making admissions.
The admission here seems to be that Clinton has acted in a way the poster deems is wrong. Rather ...the Clinton campaign has acted in a way the poster would have no difficulty pointing out as wrong, if it the Clintons were Republican.
Next, it should be noted that the left will always engage in apple and orange comparisons. We have no idea of the number of southern white Democrats who would have voted for Obama rather than Hillary had they not heard Bill Clinton's appeal. We do know that the Afrrican American vote put him over the top.
Will the Clinton's campaign's dissemination of the Barak photo help her? Well see.... and the standard for dastardliness seems to have changed from whether it's important or provable that her campaign did it... to whether not it effects the Democratic masses... :D Ah...leftists... never let it be said their arguments aren't malleable... :D
p.s. LONG BEFORE HRC or Obama... Elizabeth Dole... Alan Keyes...
Sometimes just sometimes you will see an interesting point made by a far right republican that show something akin to insight into their own worldview. Note: This is very rare as the far right are not noted for insight but instead for there ability to find interesting ways of channeling their rage (often they will copy your posting style)
In this case I am speaking of a point made regarding Clinton, in which the far right has pointed that it is difficult to test whether Clinton’s supposed race stragedy (where he mentions Jessie Jackson by name and says Jessie won a primary when he was running for president) was effective due to the diverse nature of the Democratic party.
This is of course is to any reasonable person insane. (note: reasonable means not the far right)
First off the data belies this, since SC more and more older voters and working class voters have been drifting towards Obama. Secondly Clinton mentioning Jesse Jackson by name was nowhere near as egregious as the heinous actions taken by Karl Rove Naming McCain as the father of an illegitimate black child, and still the drift occurred as more of these democrativ voters went Obama.
Now take this compared to an excellent point made by one on the far right that we do not know how effective this is in the multi Cultural Democratic party, where as we knew right away in the virtually all white Republican party that Rove’s strategy was highly successful. In the republican primary there was no doubt Rove’s race baiting worked. The thing is you will never see a republican denounce this.
7. You have to be against capital punishment but support abortion on demand.

Oh...and as far as condemning the McCain black baby thing, does George Bush count as a "far rightwinger"?

I had that conversation in mind (regarding Ford and Obama) earlier today but got distracted. Thanks for the reminder.
Grammie,
It is incredible that a representative of Planned Parenthood would express no concern as to the motivation of a donation. I wouldn't be surprised to see the link pulled from youtube.

The police were NO WHERE in sight. That's not the best part, ready for this? Medea Benjamin yelled and I quote "Marines!" she actually yelled for our help because this man had stepped out of his car. Who suffered? Go get mommy to read the article in full to you. The commy pinko was protesting the Marines, somebody drove by and spit, she creamed her jeans and yelled for the Marines to help her. See the irony?
"Demanding correct behavior?" Is that what the commy's are trying to do? Can you prove that? Do you have to pay to be a pinko or is it a free membership?
The pinkos are using violence to keep people away from the recruiting office. Which is why several of the commy's have been arrested. Read much? Keep defending the America haters and the enemy, it shows who you really are.
Is this waht you mean by "correct behavior?" The commy's and you treat illegal mexicans and terrorists a hundred times better than the men and women defending their right to make asses out of themselves, loser!

This is TOO funny!
Allah be praised!
A protester seeking to end any protection from the marines that are there to protect her, screams FOR HELP from the marines when somebody spat at her (Allah forbid!), and this un-American traitor above (10:51) condemns the one known as "olby sucks" because he observes the obvious irony.
Now how UN-AMERICAN can you get?
Now if that was my army of terrorists (which this 10:51 poster obviously loves) we would have beheaded her, and stuck her head on a stake for all to observe with NO complaints from this fine un-American poster.
Amazing to me how I haven't been able to stage even more attacks on your country with the likes of these protesters and the 10:51 poster.
Well unfortunately the president has not joined the ranks of the weak like 10:51 and the protesters, but Allah willing that day will come when the new president is elected in November.
Too funny! Potesters yelling for the ones that protect them to get out, and then run to these same protecters when they are spat upon. Allah only knows what they'll do when I call for an all out attack on this weak country!
Call for the druggies and hippies, and maybe they'll use harsh language to fight back, or even worse shower us with flowers...
Allah is good!
Akuba!!! Ayeee!!!!
Allah only knows what they'll do when I call for an all out attack on this weak country!

They'll blame Bush for "not doing enough." That's a no brainer, OBL.
