I'm not sure what the process or procedure was (neither does Olbermann; but ignorance never prevented him from opining on things); but my guess is that, if this account is true and accurate, this vast amount of information was sifted by computers for key terms and for certain addresses.

Not all - or even most - of the material was looked at. The government doesn't have the capability of checking every e-mail or phone call. Even if they did, it would be a waste of time.

More important during this discussion, of course, is that the intent of the government was not to spy on dissenting Americans or to stifle opponents of the Administration or government. All of these actions came in the aftermath of 9/11 (and other attacks overseas, of course) and were undertaken out of sincere concerns of followup attacks.

There is no evidence anywhere that these measures were done to suppress dissent or eliminate opposition at home.

The enabling laws and other procedures in Nazi Germany were entirely passed to suppress domestic opposition.

Surely Olbermann sees this?

Yes, the motivations of the Administration does not eliminate the dangers of abuse of these powers. But the motivations must be considered when someone tries to make analogies to the actions by dictators.
