As a student of history and long-time political junkie, Chris Matthews' Leg is keenly aware of the historic implications of the Obama candidacy--and it has The Leg tingling from toe to hip joint.
Never has a person with so little experience running anything, or come to think of it, doing anything, come so close to running the most powerful nation on earth. And not since Jimmy Carter has naivete and hubris combined in such towering proportions in one person. "It's truly exciting," The Leg gushed.
"We've tried "experience" and what has it gotten us," the sensitive appendage continued. "Nothing but victory in two world wars, victory in the Cold War, and Al Qaeda shattered and on the run all over the world."
"I'm confident America is ready for a leader who doesn't know what the crap he's talking about, but says it in a truly beautiful and uplifting way. After all, we had the exact opposite for the last seven years. I've got that thrilling sense that we're all witnesses to history."

The leg has spoken: "If we vote for McCain it's like staying on the Titanic. If you don't get on the lifeboat of Obama you will DIE!"

(Chris Matthews Leg link above doesn't work for me)
Obama could pee on Matthews' leg and tell him it's raining and he would beleive it.

I for one welcome the community organizer and chief...
"Never has a person with so little experience running anything, or come to think of it, doing anything, come so close to running the most powerful nation on earth."
1) - Just look where around 100 years of combined 'experience' has gotten us with Cheney and Rumsfeld.
2) - Bush's 'experience' has netted us the most incompetent and stubborn president in recent history.
3) - The president doesn't 'run' the country.
4) - It is very debatable as to whether we are actually "the most powerul nation on earth". I would certainly hate to have to test that theory against China....either militarily or economically.
5) - There is no qualifying 'experience' that would prepare anyone to be president of the United States.
6) - We could not POSSIBLY do any worse than the president we have now!
7) - Obama has already shown exceptional leadership qualities in the way he has run his campaign.
8) - He certainly showed he was definitely smarter than 3/4th of the American People in 2003 by unequivably opposing the invasion of Iraq. Isn't it about time we got over our silly fear of "elitism" and elected a president a little bit smarter than the average Joe?
9) - Hillary Clinton also tried the 'experience' argument without success.
10)- Judgement trumps experience every time.
I'm certainly willing to take my chances. ..... Meanwhile, I hope the rest of America isn't too fearful to do the same.
1. Good reason NOT to elect obama.
2. First, that's pure opinion. Second, ditto above.
3. Really?
4. More opinion, debatable.
5. LOL!
6. Wow!
7. Big whoop. "I've been to 57 states and I have 2 more to go." BHO
8. Had nothing to do w/knowledge. Pure politics. Nothing more.
9. I'm pretty sure Hillary got the majority of the public vote.
10. See No. 1. BHO has no judgement. See Wright, Flooger, Ayers, Johnson, etc.
You do your gambling on ebay, ok? Voting for obama is gambling w/our lives!
OS, you contradicted yourself again!
First, you referred to No #1 twice, implying that you actually believe Cheney and Rumsfeld exercised good judgement.
But then you answered No. #9 with an admission that invading Iraq was a dumb decision by implying Obama got it right accidently.
hich is it Bro?
Correction, "No. #9" above should have read No. #8.
"Voting for Obama is gambling w/our lives!"
And voting for his opposition is a sure bet for the continuation of the downfall of America...already well under way under the incompetent but 'experienced' leadership of Bush.
I was referring to my no. 1, not yours.
Nice to know you are ok with gambling with our lives just as long there is a (d) in the white house......

In an effort to keep this thread relevant to the site, I’m sure both Olbermann and Matthews would agree with everything you’ve said.
It’s true that experience alone doesn’t guarantee success for presidential candidates. The president who had the most experience when he was elected (10 years in the House of Representatives, minister to Russia, 10 years in the Senate, four years as secretary of state, then minister to Britain) was James Buchanan, universally recognized as a pretty lousy president. Having said that, voting for an inexperienced candidate solely because that candidate seemingly represents change in a turbulent time can also lead to a pretty lousy president, like Jimmy Carter.
You cite fear twice in your post as why people don’t support Obama (afraid of elitism and afraid to vote for him). Why do people who oppose Obama have to be afraid of something for you to explain their opposition? Can’t there be some other legitimate reasons for their opposition? If I said people who opposed McCain were only afraid of success in Iraq, would you think was an accurate or fair assessment? Of course you wouldn’t.
The Obama candidacy is reminiscent of Carter. His comments about how Americans can’t eat all they want, drive their SUV’s and keep their homes at 72 degrees is right out of the Carter manifesto. Obama suggests that Americans have to suffer even more than we have recently in order to achieve his audacious hope.
You go ahead and vote for change. I’ll vote for improvement.

I saw that pathetic speech. It was nothing but fear mongering the whole 10 minutes I was able to sit through. mikeh doesn't see it that way, though.
Sefton, thanks for a reasonable and thoughtful reply. I don't get that very often.
I actually agree that a McCain presidency would probably be a vast improvement over the Bush presidency, and I also agree with you that there are very legitimate reasons for voting for him. My contention is simply that fear of the alternative should not be one of them.
By the way, I remember Carter well, and 1) - I see no resemblance between the two, and 2) - Carter was not nearly as 'bad' a president as he is being labeled. Continued and lasting peace between Israel and Egypt is but one example of a positive accomplishment.
Carter was absolutely RIGHT when he attempted to use his presidential bully pulpit to change public attitudes about fuel consumption and energy conservation. If we had listened and had we continually worked towards that end from that point until now, we would not be in the energy fix we are in today.

Hurray! Welcome aboard, Chris Matthews' Leg!!
We look forward to all your fervency and sensitivity!
You may not have Keith Olbermann's superhuman patellar reflexes, but he's not nearly as passionate!
You guys should see how harsh Mike is with me in the comments for "Links for 2008-06-10." It's pretty bad.
