"COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN" (8:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. ET)
Host: Keith Olbermann
Topics:
Guests:
You couldn't beat this opening spiel with a stick. Just moments before calling the McCain campaign "liars", Herr Olbermann himself spewed that Obama's visit to the troops was "cancelled by the Pentagon"! Say what? Even Obama isn't making that claim! Never fear. Keith reversed himself and said the opposite before he even got to the first commercial break. But which one is true? For our purposes it doesn't matter, because one of them is Another Olbermann Lie.
Philly:
Meltdown regular Butchie Madcow [tonight playing a political scientist --J$] claims the media is "covering" for McCain. Olby calls the media sleazy for not criticizing McCain's ads. More left-wing propaganda and outright lies on the Hour of Spin.
MikeH:
The media IS covering for McCain.....If you don't believe it, explain the CBS "mistake" last week substuting the wrong answer for the right question?.....Explain his being given a pass on confusing Al Qeada with Iran?.....Explain his being given a pass when he said 'I didn't love my country until I was deprived of her company' while running Michelle Obama into the ground for saying virtually the same thing?.....Explain "Chechoslovakia".....Meanwhile Obama is being criticized for daring to look too presidential.
J$:
While you're asking McCain to explain Czechoslovakia, perhaps you could address the same question to Keith "Czechoslovakia" Olbermann!
Quads:
In the segment that featured Rachel Maddow, Olby Planet was in a complete counter-clockwise spin once again defying all physical aspects of reality and logic. It was almost as if Superman, Lois Lane and Great Caeser's ghost took off together from the Olbyplanet spin center and reversed the rotation of the earth. Maddow, clearly playing the role of Lois Lane, claimed that McCain was getting a pass from the media and that Obama was the one under constant scrutiny from the press. CrazyLegs nodded in agreement, but clearly had his mind was elsewhere as he now feels like (with Maddow) he is playing the role of Kris Kristopherson in "A Star is Born."
Great Thanks:
I like how Jimmy Legs had Obama's campaign advisor on (and not just any advisor, the Senior advisor!) to respond to McCain "attack" ads. I'm trying to remember if Olbermann had a McCain advisor on to respond to the lunatic ads that said McCain wanted the war to last 100 years. Probably not, since Keith himself lied that McCain wanted "our troops fighting and dying in Iraq for 50 or 100 years." [Naturally, we have updated The List! --J$]
J$:
I like how Oralmann turned to factcheck.org to back up his claims that McCain's ad "lied". How many of the problems that site found with pro-Obama ads has Bathtub Boy reported on The Hour of Spin. Here's a hint: Zero!
In the #3 segment (Olby and The Perfessor) we started the clock as soon as The Perfessor began to speak. How long would it take before he would claim there was some sort of federal crime? [Ding!] Less than two minutes!
Observer Dan:
1. Olby was far too tickled with himself when teasing the worst segment involving Rupert Murdoch and the funny pirate voice.
2. Olby was far too proud of himself when exclaiming he really wanted to use the 'F' word when telling W to shut the hell up.
These behaviors remind me of perhaps the same kind of glee Michael Jackson would get watching youngsters ride his merry-go-round. Creepy.
Quads:
In the Number 1 Story in the Countdown, the ever narcissistic Olby showed a way-too- long clip of his alleged acting talents on a segment titled Ham Chowder. Olby, appearing to be playing the role of Falstaff in a dark comedy, was clearly looking for an opportunity display his acting wares in the hope of hosting SNL before Karl "Dancing Machine" Rove. The noises heard in the studio this time were not of the stagehands laughing on cue, but rather SNL's Lorne Michael's barfing into a nearby trash can.
Mike C:
In the Media Matters Minute, Rupert Murdoch...again! It's like a broken record. This time, it's regarding Fox Business Network. Olbermahn gleefully reported FBN's low ratings. He should thank Cablevision for that. They're in no hurry to add the channel to its lineup. And don't they have a partnership with MSNBC? Still, I'm grateful they added 15 HD channels today, including FNC HD. Back on OlbyPlanet, "most minor league baseball teams do much better than that." CNBC good, all things Fox bad. Next.
Dick Morris. Unflattering vidcap. Mock impression. Normal voice for unnamed person asking interview questions. (sarcasm, smirk): "Sure, great. Unleash a massive, possibly nuclear Middle Eastern war just to keep the Republicans in power." Keith TV-14 Olbermann uses Morris' first name with anatomical implication. [ding!]
Lt. Col. Allen West, U.S. Army (Ret.), who is running for Congress in Florida. Yes, Jane Fonda Olbermann went after another serviceman. West turned down an interview with al Jazeera. Fat Ass giggled while explaining Sec. Chertoff and "some guy named John McCain" appeared for interviews on there. Confirmation, please. "We have no idea if Col. West has won any medals for paranoia." "Republican Florida Congressional Candidate Allen 'A TV Network Plans To Kidnap Me' West!" Keithy loves those troops, but only if they have a D next to their name, represent far-left causes, speak ill of the current administration, or turn against said administration. What a guy.
APPENDIX: LTC West's campaign website.

Dogs That Did Not Bark:
Keith continues to prove what a conceited, dishonest pseudo-journalist he is, refusing to correct or apologize for his Wednesday lie about Bill O'Reilly. For that matter, we're still waiting for a correction to yet another factually inaccurate smear: his Thursday claim that Duncan Hunter (an R, natch) wanted to go out and slaughter "endangered animals", i.e. wildebeests. The wildebeest, also known as the gnu, is not--as any first-year zoology student knows--endangered. Not anywhere in the world. Another example of "Man on Fan" Olbermann ratcheting up the rhetoric with a lie to concoct a smear against--surprise!--a Republican. Also while he was insulting Rupert Murdoch tonight, it was interesting to note how careful Keithy was to avoid mentioning that FBN ratings today are on a par with what FNC was doing at this point in its history. That's Too Much Information on OlbyPlanet.
Katy Turic:
Once again Olby toots his own horn
The most self-centered hack ever born
Olby's Soup cameo
"News" anchor... new low
Compared to Murrow, Keith is just porn
And that's The Hour of Spin for this, the 813th day since the declaration that "Karl Rove will in fact be indicted".
Great thanks to all our OlbyWatch recappers who contributed!
I second the thanks. Way to go, team!
"Obama's visit to the troops was 'cancelled by the Pentagon'
Yep.....a lie....even the NYT does not support that spin:
"But two days before the visit, Pentagon officials told the campaign that only Mr. Obama would be allowed inside the medical center in his capacity as a senator. The adviser who had intended to join Mr. Obama, Scott Gration, a retired major general in the Air Force, was told he could not go along because he was a volunteer campaign adviser.
"Mr. Obama was asked by reporters to explain the matter on Saturday in London.
"'That triggered then a concern that maybe our visit was going to be perceived as political, and the last thing that I want to do is have injured soldiers and the staff at these wonderful institutions having to sort through whether this is political or not or get caught in the crossfire between campaigns,' Mr. Obama said. 'So rather than go forward and potentially get caught up in what might have been considered a political controversy of some sort, what we decided was that we not make a visit and instead I would call some of the troops that were there.'"

The quote: "what we [the Obama campaign] decided was that we not make a visit...."
Will there be a correction tonight by Keith Olbermann on his error as a journalist? Doubtful.
The facts are simple to understand. The Pentagon reminded the good Senator about the need to avoid making the visit look like a campaign stop and he said HE decided not to take the chance and cancelled. It was the Senator's decision not to go and people can judge him for such a decision and assess his motives as they please....it is a free country.
I personally think that since he could not have the visits covered with TV images, like his visit with the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, he thought it would not be a plus PR-wise and decided to move-on.....not a good reflection of his priorities.
But again, I am not surprised the old-time politician feels the need to have everything recorded for his adoring masses to consume....
VERO POSSUMUS!
When Olbermann chastised one of the FNC guys for saying Obama got no bounce from his Germany speech, well, read it and weep, Keith:
July 29 (Bloomberg) -- Republican John McCain gained ground in a poll that found Democrat Barack Obama's trip abroad didn't broaden confidence in his ability to be commander-in-chief of the U.S. military, USA Today said.
The USA Today/Gallup poll conducted July 25-27 showed Illinois Senator Obama with 47 percent to 44 percent for Arizona Senator McCain among registered voters, down from the 6 percentage point lead Obama had in a similar poll last month.
oh noes!
