Far-Left Demonstrates Its Vision of "Free Speech": Olbermann Fires Dana Milbank for Obama Criticism
EDITOR'S NOTE: Milbank is now disputing Olbermann's account, saying that his deal with CNN has been in the works and had nothing to do with Keith's ire over the Obama "symbol" story. See links/updates at the bottom of this post.
Any remaining doubts that might have existed among viewers of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann that Keith, the show, and his network, are in the tank for Barack Obama have been erased with Olbermann's declaration that Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank will no longer appear on MSNBC. To unspin the spin, Olbermann fired Milbank after four years of head-nodding to Keith's every utterance for having the temerity to not agree with Keith as to whether
Milbanks "symbol" story was accurate.
In
a post yesterday, Daily Kos blogger Keith Olbermann said that Milbank's decision to leave MSNBC for another network "saved [Olbermann] an increasingly difficult decision". Milbank is
going to CNN.
Olbermann writes:
Dana Milbank of The Washington Post, who notified us today that after four years appearing with us, he had accepted another television offer.
This saved your crack Countdown staff an increasingly difficult decision.
For nearly a week we'd been waiting for him to offer a correction or an explanation for his column from last week in which he apparently reported an Obama quote without a full context turned the meaning of the quote inside-out.
Then he called criticisms of his column "whines" even though the dispute was over whether Obama said the self-deprecating: "It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign -- that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have just become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions" -- or only the part about "I have just become a symbol..."
We had decided not to have Dana on this news-hour again until this was cleared up, and, sadly after some very happy years, he's apparently chosen to make that cloud permanent.
Good luck, Dana.

America is starting to get a good look at what "free speech" will look like under the far-left junta which will take power if Barack Obama is elected, giving Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid supreme power in the United States with control over both houses of Congress and the White House.
Reporters are fired for failing to "correct" stories that paint favored candidates in a bad light. [Olbermann fires Milbank]

Even maxed-out Obama supporters are
thrown to the wolves. [HuffPo attacks HuffPo contributor for publishing Obama's "bitter" comments]
Ralph Peters says it very well in
his recent NY Post Op-Ed:
The extreme left loves to pretend it stands for freedom. It never has and never will. From the Reign of Terror in Paris onward, its core agenda has been the tyranny of egomaniacal intellectuals. The hard left hates an open debate - especially these days, when it's out of new ideas.
My first thought on hearing about the Milbank "symbol" story was "he's done" at Countdown so I can hardly say I am surprised. What does surprise me is the unprofessional manner in which Keith announced Milbank's departure: a blog post on Daily Kos? A transparent attempt by Keith to "break up" with Milbank before Milbank "broke up" with Keith. Does it get more juvenile? I particularly love the idea that Keith states that it was Milbank's refusal to "correct" or "explain" his article that led to his firing. Earth to Keith - he did not make his report on your show! If Milbank is to be accountable to anyone it would be his editors at the Washington Post who published his piece - and they are standing by his reporting (what does this say about all the other WaPo reporters who appear on MSNBC?). As we all know, Keith has such high journalistic standards that he cannot even tolerate having a guest who wrote a piece for another media outlet that Keith believes requires a correction.
Of course, as long-time OlbyWatch readers know, the sole criteria that determines air time is a guests willingness to smile and nod their head while Keith asks a rambling "question" in which Keith asserts opinion after opinion and then closes by asking the guest if they agree with him.
A New TV Drinking Game?
This gives me an idea. Here's a suggestion for those far-left loons who hang on Keith's every word. How about a new drinking game for college students where every time a guest says "that's right, Keith" you chug a beer. Every time a guest says "exactly, Keith" you do a shot. If a guest disagrees with Keith you to run to the bathroom, throw up, and start over again.
Finally, let's give credit where credit is due. Hats off to Milbank for refusing to kow tow to Olbermann's narcissism.
UPDATE: Stay Classy Keith!
Unable to leave it alone, Olbermann has to disparage Milbank, claiming he is now making less money, and disparaging former MSNBC and NBC employees who leave to go work at CNN.

Who said "bigger and better"? All I said was "another" tv offer.
I'll leave it for him to announce it, but if it's what I'm told it is, it ain't better.

Yup, CNN. That always works out well for people who used to be on MSNBC and NBC.

UPDATE:
Milbank calls Keith a liar
Keith responds, calls Milbank a big liar
Milbank ups the ante,
calls Keith a "liar, liar", says Keith's pants are on fire.
This is the height of Olbermann's hypocrisy in full display. But I'd bet my 401K that his fans are claiming Olby's brave and all that Murrow crap they like to spout.
Playing everynight on MSNBC...
Puppet Show
&
Keith Olbermann
I Don't think Dana will be talking anytime soon. I'm would imagine there are some juicy stories as well as e-mails between the two, that Dana has since printed these diddy's out and has them secured in an undisclosed location.
But, it really serves him no good.....at this point, to put even further stink on Olby.
Frankly, this Wikipedia nonsense really rankles me. It's bad enough that far-lefties dominate what information goes into peoples' entries, but these same propagandists that prop up liberals also abuse their editing power to destroy non-liberals, Bill O'Reilly being my favorite example. Carefully read over his Wikiquote page and you'll see what I mean. Disgraceful.
The thought police are growing more aggressive.
Those that think like Keith Olbermann, who refuse to leave the demogoguery behind and engage others with different opinions and beliefs, are the rule on the left, not the exception.
Free thinkers will continue to avoid going on COUNTDOWN and we will all see that the variety of guests will continue to decrease. What is the purpose of the show other than promoting the agenda of the radical left?
Thank you Robert for wading through the comments and finding the actual exchange. Olbermann is the most classless A$$hat in showbiz. Yes SHOWbiz, can anyone imagine Brokaw, Gibson, even Couric saying such crap about a fellow "NEWS" collegue.
And yes Media Critic, you would win back your 401K, here's one of those loving blind-eye "Keith is God" comments from Olby's adoring "Leonas" at the fangirl site Blogging Olbermann:
"No wonder Keith wished Dana “Good Luck” if he is going to be opposite Countdown. I would have said, “Lot’s of luck, buddy.”
Why is it that so many people, especially men, cannot admit it when they make a mistake? ( One of the things I do admire about Keith. He corrects things and does not allow them to become a big deal. Perhaps when one is that large there is no need to protect one’s manly image.)
This was not forcing Dana to support Obama but holding him to journalistic integrity not to distort what had been said to give a totally skewed impression.
Wondering if I now need to sell my copy of Homo Politicus at a garage sale, and thinking, NOT, as I loved the book."

---------------I love it when she says "One of the things I do admire about Keith. He corrects things and does not allow them to become a big deal." Yeah, that's right, Keify "corrected" himself pretty good over the McCLELLAN flap, lets see, it took him about 3, 4 days to not have it be a "big deal." teehee! ....seriously, these people are ripe to join a cult.
If you really want to see Wikipedia bias, just read the Olbermann entry.
For more on that, read my debate with Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales on this very topic over at PBS.org:
Wales Discusses Political Bias on Wikipedia
http://tinyurl.com/f7xcw
"Conservative blogger Robert Cox, who writes the National Debate blog, told me he was amazed at the quality of Wikipedia and thought it was a great resource. But there was something about the free online community-generated encyclopedia that was getting under his skin — what Cox believed was a liberal bias in many hot-button topic entries, despite Wikipedia’s principle of giving a neutral point of view (NPOV).
Cox felt there was a liberal tilt to the entry on George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and the partial-birth abortion entry, to name a few. Plus, at one point, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales invoked the dreaded WP:OFFICE command — basically a unilateral edit done only by Wales — to tone down a scathing liberal point-of-view entry on the conservative site NewsMax.com."
Robert, Have you tried to make any edits since that conversation? It seems his page has been streamlined, somewhat. They now include Katy Tur. Perhaps you could add her age, 24, and that she is a "FREELANCE" reporter, and daughter of Bob Tur, which are ALL facts and see if they take it out. (I would also add a link to Huff Post or New York Observer about how Ms. Tur got her "job" 'wink, wink' ---but I know THAT would be removed).
From "Personal Life" on Olbermann's Wikipedia Page.
Originally from New York City, Olbermann grew up in Westchester County, attending school at Hastings-on-Hudson. Keith Olbermann is of German ancestry. [1] He was raised in the Unitarian faith. [2] Olbermann lives with Katy Tur, a reporter with WPIX-TV, in New York City.[3]

BTW, how can they estimate Olbermann's personal wealth at 14.2 million. He overpaid 4 mil for his condo, he was RENTING before that, he doesn't pay his taxes, and his salary was NEVER confirmed at 4 mil, (that is what HE floated out there), maybe he's counting his vast BASEBALL card collection in that 14.2 million fugure....
Maybe Milbank will get Nancy Grace's job at CNN... and compete directly with KO. Seems like they have to do something with that time slot.
I hope Milbank exposes Olbermann for the fake that he is!
looks like 'ole Olby is digging in deeper to his hole of lies...BONUS, Milbank give a shot to MSNBC...
Keith Olbermann responds to Dana Milbank's statement to TVNewser that his departure from MSNBC, "predated" a column he'd written about Barack Obama and that "nothing occurred along the lines Keith described."
Olbermann tells TVNewser:
"Dana appeared with us the night before his column appeared with the truncated Obama quote — and did so under the terms of his contract which both he and MSNBC obviously considered still in force. After the column, he contacted us, joking he was glad I hadn't put him on the "Worst Persons" list, and then discussing with the producers coming on to clarify or explain what he wrote. Out of appreciation for his work for us, I had delayed a permanent decision on whether he should again appear on Countdown. Dana used this time to make another deal, which he told us about the day before he appeared on another network."
Milbank also responded to FishbowlDC's Patrick Gavin, and seems to take a swipe at Olbermann: "The CNN contract was negotiated long before the Obama column. It's just that CNN's a better fit for me and my philosophy of holding all parties to account."

--------------Perhaps Dana should thank Olby for giving him all this free press for his CNN gig...keep on digging Keify...teehee..
If Milbank is getting less money from CNN, that means either he really wanted to get the hell away from MSNBC or CNN does not think much of him (or both). Given Milbank's frequent appearances on Countdown, I don't think MSNBC was trying to get rid of him. Having a lot of contributors helps create the illusion that many viewpoints are being provided, even if those contributors all have similar viewpoints.
Speaking of illusions, KO is trying to make this all about Milbank's column and a "failure" to explain or correct, and ignoring the simple fact that his contract with MSNBC merely expired and Milbank moved on. In doing so, KO is trying to make everyone believe he has total control over his surroundings: everyone wants to be on Countdown, and if they don't do what KO wants them to do, KO has the power to banish them unilaterally.
“And for my next trick, I’ll be number one in the unborn to 17 demo!”
Now this from Milbank:
"The CNN contract was negotiated long before the Obama column. It's just that CNN's a better fit for me and my philosophy of holding all parties to account."

Ouch. THis may garner the former Olby fav a wprst person mention!
cee:
That's a funny comment from Millbank, but the truth is that over the past few years, he's only attempted to hold one side accountable. At least when he appears on Coundown, that is. I'm not familiar with his work for The Washington Post.
Bill, Milbank's last op ed showed he is willing to call them as he sees them and not allow Democrat party spin to interfere. The next day recants that tried to spin Obama's comments as actually self-depricating were anonymous and from supporters. The "cloud" Olbermann imagines is arguable and Milbank obviously knows frow where Olbermann speaks (Olbermann is in the Obama campaign's pocket).
my, my, Olby's minions are busy...seems by Monday AM, Milbank's Wiki page now included this:
Milbank was criticized for a July 2008 article in which he allegedly misquoted Barack Obama and as a result portrayed Obama as "presumptuous" [7][8]. MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann stated that Milbank would not be allowed back onto his show until Milbank wrote a retraction. [9] Milbank subsequently left Oblermann's show for another show on CNN,[10]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_Milbank
------------------------Dana better get ahead of this, Olby is getting the upperhand in the boldface lie spin war...
I will check in later. I am taking Mrs. OlbyWatch to see her favorite singer/sex symbol - Sting.
I have 12th row tickets for The Police/Elvis Costello at Jones Beach for tonight. Olby will have to wait.
To repeat KO's quote: "After the column, he contacted us, joking he was glad I hadn't put him on the "Worst Persons" list, and then discussing with the producers coming on to clarify or explain what he wrote. Out of appreciation for his work for us, I had delayed a permanent decision on whether he should again appear on Countdown. "
Contrast that to "For nearly a week we'd been waiting for him to offer a correction or an explanation for his column from last week in which he apparently reported an Obama quote without a full context turned the meaning of the quote inside-out."
KO can't keep the truth straight for 24 hours can he? Did Dana not offer an explanation/clarification/correction, or did KO just decide he didn't want one, since the Kossacks were already in full-throated uproar on this? Which was it Keith?
The NY Times web site appears to be down right now. Haha.
Milbank won't be back on the show
Because Olby can't keep him in tow
He has opinions
Unlike Keith's minions
That bob up and down like Keith's ho
Here's a user comment from MediaBistro from a user named IrishLightning. It's beautiful:
At first I heard of this I thought it was the Bitchy Queen dropping Milbank for uttering an anti-Obama thought in his column, thus crossing Keith in a way that is not survivable. It explained to me Andrea Mitchell's nonsensical statement that MSNBC was actually helpful to NBC news. I assumed she had seen the fate of those who cross Keith even tangentially and thus she was so scared of him it forced her to make those statements. But now it looks as if this was a Milbank move and that he decided he was tired of being a left wing shill for the Olberman/MSNBC left wing propaganda machine. Olbermann is the Sith Lord of Left Wing propaganda. Like all bitchy queens he is the Master of office politics. At first his toxicity is inebriating and seductive until you are fully ensnared and the poison starts to eat away at the soul of your credibility (think Eugene Robinson or any guest he has on from the Nation) and you look in the mirror one day and realize you are fully on the dark side with your master Olby-one Keith olby. Good for Milbank to find some shred of decency and objectivity that had not been extinguished by his years of minstrel like performances on Countdown. Another broken and failed relationship for Olbermann. Another bridge burned by his incendiary snarkiness and complete lack of bonhomie. Will Milbank be an asset to CNN? Not in his current gollum-like form he had taken from the hours spent desiring to have his Precious--facetime on Countdown. But over time, he will have a chance to cleanse his sole of the Olber infection and reconstitute himself as a journalist with self-respect that he may have been before his sad descent into the world of Olbermann's delusional political house of mirrors. Dana, congratulations on breaking free. Good luck to you. The road back to respectability will be long and hard but you are now free to breathe the clean air of legitimacy far away from the toxic fumes that have overtaken the MSNBC operations.
So now, all of a sudden, Milbank is some sort of hero? With all of that head nodding and "yes, Keith." "Ha ha, exactly, Keith." "You're right on, Keith." "I love you, Keith." Maybe Dana Milbank is in the process of starting to think on his on, but since I've only seen him on Countdown, I still, until he changes my mind, consider him a hack.
Milbank still might be a hack, but at least he was man enough not to let Keith get away with smearing him.
Hey Robert, hope you and the Mrs. OW had a great time at the Police concert. You are a good husband for taking Mrs. OW to see Sting, even though he's pushing 60, most women find him pretty sexy...
Thanks Scott, excellent comment and good catch!
To me the single most absurd feature of this entire incident is Keith's notion that a Washington Post reporter has to answer to Keith for something the reporter wrote for the Washington Post which Keith believed to be inaccurate or misleading. Just the idea that Keith is concerning himself with someone else's journalistic integrity is mind-bending.
Anyone think The Wolfman will ever be able to conqueror his dominate obsequious gene and say something contrary to Olbermann?
Dana Milbank and Craig Crawford have.
What regular is next to be banned from Countdown?
I think now that the Hillary bashing has somewhat subsided, and will Milbank gone, seems Craig Crawford is back on Countdown.
