"COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN" (8:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. ET)
Host: Keith "Czechoslovakia" Olbermann
Topics:
Guests:
Lies, smears, attacks, distortions, all in a days work for Oralmann, and tonight was no exception. You'll see how dishonestly he slants the news, with the help of a brain trust of the bluest cast of characters yet assembled for a one night stand on The Hour of Spin.
seattleJohn:
Story # 5 "McCain over exceeds authority, already"
In attacking McCain, it's becoming standard practice on Olbyplanet to first attack Sarah Palin... tonight is no different, in a speech Palin says "Palin and McCain"... and that slip of the tongue earns Fat Ass's wrath.
With the Palin smear out of the way... Olby jumps on McCain for saying he would fire the head of the SEC. Olby says a President can't just fire the head of the SEC - er, unless it's for cause Which means that McCain *could* actually fire the head of the SEC. Keating Five [Ding!] reference. Guest Howie Fineman nods and smirks at Oblytard's "sage" remarks... more Palin sexist smears... she's agressive and "wants to be the star of the show". Howard says he *agrees* with Keith's troopergate analysis (that's right, another Palin smear discussed) - so, you KNOW he was "Great thanksed!"
J$:
Of course the all-knowing Oralmann once again lied got his facts wrong (we're feeling charitable tonight). And so did Pundit when he claimed McCain got it all wrong. Not only can the President fire the SEC Chairman for cause, he has the right to demote him from the chairmanship (and leave him on the committee). In other words, fire him from his job as SEC Chairman. Countdown: when they don't lie, they don't know what they're talking about.
SeattleJohn:
Story #4.5 - "McCain fast changing rhetoric"
Keify bellows McCain "flip flops"! Chris Kofinis (the adulterer Edward's campaign 'strategist') hammers home on dem talking points [Yes, we have updated The List --J$] - McCain will be 4 more years of the evil Boooooosh! zzz-zzzzz-zzzzzz Campaign Waterloo... campaign is a strategic free-for-all... it's tone deaf. zzzz-zzzz-zzzzz McCain has no core convictions... zzz-zz-zzzzzzzz. Olby brings up Palin and Troopergate *a-gain* - and of course they all agree that it's bad for (can you guess?) the McCain campaign.
Story # 4 "Where in the world is Spain?"
Kiethy claims that McCain is confused multiple times and mixing everthing up during an interview on the Radio... he then plays a clip to demonstrate how out of it McCain is - except the clip doesn't demonstrate that at all (Olbyloons fall for this kind of stuff?).
Guest Steve Clemons - says McCain had a "Sarah Pailin moment" (bonus Plain smear in a McCain segment) in that he wasn't ready to talk about Spain. Olby screams "McCain flip flop" "lockstep with Bush"! Steve says that this McCain non-screw-up is much worse than just being in "lockstep with Bush". Ooooooh, you know Olby was happy!
J$:
Clemons fits the profile for a guest on The Hour of Spin: far-leftist whose website encourages readers to read such distinguished publications as OlbyFave Talking Points Memo, and that bastion of respected journalism, Washington Monthly, where one can read such articles as "The Republican War on Voting" and "McCain's Pain in Spain" (hey, that sounds a lot like one of Olbermoronn's bon-mots tonight...coincidence?) What, Edward R Olbermann didn't tell you any of this? He rarely lets the gullible viewers know what hacks his guests are.
Something else that didn't fit the spin from Oralmann and his parrot: the person who interviewed McCain denied that he got confused, or didn't understand. He just didn't want to answer the question. Oops, TMI on OlbyPlanet.
The #3 guest was cut from the same cloth. But you already knew that. This is The Hour of Spin after all. Melissa Harris-Lacewell (love those three-named wonders) appears with Bill Maher, and writes for such mainstream publications as Huffington Post, Slate, and The Nation. She gives public advice to Barack Obama on such respected websites as Democracy Now! 'Nuff said.
SeattleJohn:
Story #1 "Fox Lobs Pailin Softballs"
Olbermann mocks the "Fixed News" [Ding!] interview of Sarah Palin as 'softball' (that he complains about a softball inteview with a straight face is unreal and quite a feat). Then, out of nowhere, Olby injects a clip of someone on Fox saying the word 'tits' (in an interview about Palin) for no apparant reason other than Keith being a perv. Olby then plays a hacked up clip of the Palin interview... and cracks jokes that aren't funny.
ramjet:
Why would someone use 62 seconds of quick edits, repetitive phrases, quite possibly repeating the same clip numerous times and smirky ridicule rather than actually showing a full clip of a "softball" question and the answer?
The Factor:
Does Olby really want to get into who lobs softballs at guest? Do we need to pull clips of Olbermann and his blue dress interview with Obama?
MikeC:
In the Media Matters Minute, O'Reilly Attack #512. Keith "Man on Fan" Olbermann's "glorious" Blue Blog Source was Slate. Billo the Clown [Ding!] "Billo's [Ding!] claims about the number of times he's said shut up on TV." The "claims" varied depending on the interviews Bill has done over the years. The Ted Baxter voice was used when quoting what Slate said BOR said in interviews, including "six times in 12 years" in this week's Time magazine. Here's the full quote. But most of the times listed, and read on the gotcha paper, were in jest about a non-guest to a neutral guest, in passing about a non-guest to a neutral guest, or in the Talking Points Memo. Jeremy Glick! Dave Kopel of the Rocky Mountain News was listed, but he was filibustering and deserved it.
Worser was the Virginia Republican Party for some event they're having. George Allen! Macaca! [Ding!]
Worst was Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, Hillary supporter now backing McCain. Oh, God, no! Obamamann basically labeled her a hypocrite for calling the people Obama referred to as "bitter" as "rednecks." Also, for calling Obama an elitest while she is married to royalty on a "3,200 acre estate ascot in Buckinghamshire north of London!"
And that's The Hour of Spin for this, the 866th day since the declaration that "Karl Rove will in fact be indicted". Great thanks to our OlbyWatch recappers who did such an assiduously good job tonight with a thoroughly thankless task!
To back up with J$ says on the firing of the SEC Chairman...
Interesting comment from a lawyer affiliated with the Weekly Standard magazine regarding whether McCain *could* fire the SEC Chairman...
"Contributor Adam White, an attorney, writes in explaining that McCain's critics are completely wrong:
It's true that the SEC is an "independent agency," and that the statute creating the SEC (specifically, Section 4 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934) doesn't expressly state that the president can fire SEC commissioners.
But the law on this point is well settled: As the D.C. Circuit reiterated as recently as last month, in Free Enterprise Fund v. Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, 537 F.3d 667, 668-69 (D.C. Cir. 2008), "[m]embers of the Commission, in turn, are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate and subject to removal by the President for cause; its chairman is selected by and serves at the pleasure of the President."
The courts have never said that Congress can completely prevent a president from firing officials of an independent agency. At best, Congress can limit the president to firing such officials only "for cause," and the term "for cause" is generally interpreted pretty broadly."
Fat Ass lies again!!!
Two corrections to my contribution:
1) "depending on the interviews Bill has done with other media outlets or publications over the years."
2) "Buckinghamshire".
Doesn't it seem kind of ghoulish that the Olbyloons, including Olby himself, are so gleeful over the market meltdown? Anything to their base's or candidate's benefit is good to them.
I didn't watch Part 1 of Hannity's interview with Palin last night because I couldn't stand his voice or doctrinaire style. Tonight, I bit the bullet and watched Part 2. I actually thought it was pretty good. At least on this night, Sean didn't seem so bad to me. For one thing, I didn't know he played ice hockey growing up, which he admitted at the interview's conclusion. I'm still waiting for "The Factor" interview, though. Maybe after the VP debate two weeks from tonight.
The t-word slip occurred on "Fox & Friends" this morning. Another *pretend* walk-off followed. LOL
Here's is the fuller quote of BOR addressing what I call the dreaded two words:
"I've said 'shut up' to people six times in 12 years and they all deserved it. They were either bloviating or filibustering or lying. 12 years on the air, six times I've said it, and this is a big far-left mantra. (mocking voice and face): 'He always says shut up!' These people never watch the show. They don't know who I am. They're zombies. Night of the Living Internet. (makes a zombie expression.) And, so, I gotta put up with this, but, that's what's going on."
I call it "the dreaded two words" because when I hear him say it, no matter the context, I know that Olby & Co. will end up using it as a gotcha. And what happened tonight? Rip 'n Read quoted "glorious" Slate's tally of all utterances, no matter the context, of those two words.
The interview was conducted in "The Factor" studio one day last week, an hour or so before air time. You can tell because there's a clock on the TelePrompTer behind BOR. I think that's Studio A, which is also where "America's Newsroom" and "Red Eye" eminate from. I could be wrong.
I forgot to mention that the fuller quote is in the Time video here:

My sentiments in Olbyspeak:
Does this, his childish recap of Gov. Palin's interview , at long last, finally, please!... once and for all put to rest the myth that Mr. Olbermann is an honest journalist, and if so, doesn't that eviscerate any remaining shred of credibility, how ever thin, that was clinging to this self-proclaimed truth teller and the MSNBC campaign of biased political reportage?
Goodnight and good riddance!
Ramjet,
Olby's been demoted, so any semblance of integrity or illusory attempt at fairness can now go out the window.
The Goon has no reason to hide his true self anymore.
Caution and leftist temperance have been thrown to the wind. Obama-Into-The-White-House is his only edict now.
If he loses his job for it, so be it. He knows he'll always have a throne to sit in at Kos.
He has already been exposed for the Fraud he always was. It's just a matter of time before NBC finally pulls the plug on him. (Assuming they have a measure of integrity left......)
Whoops she did it again..KO's GirlFriday beat him in the ratings...
CABLE NEWS RACE

Now that MSNBC know they have someone who get the same Ratings as KO..that has to make Bathtub boy a little nervous. New Murrow indeed.
Speaking of ratings, right on que, paranoid Olbermann runs to DailyKos to "explain" Rachel Maddow's ratings, plus reminding everyone why Donahue was cancelled, ratings. Man, this guy is sooooo predictable....if JS doesn't mind, I'm pasting Olby's entire comment:
Common Sense Says: Duh
This is the new Republican meme: people are "rejecting" Countdown because Rachel gets higher ratings some night. It's a classic forest-for-the-trees thing. Since she started, my ratings are up 50-75%. It doesn't matter who has more on a given night. I'll be the one applauding loudest if she gets more every night.
Even if I was as shallow as somebody here suggests, you need to look a little bigger-picture.
This is our schedule, 8 PM-Midnight Eastern:
8 PM Me
9 PM Rach
10 PM Me
11 PM Rach
It's not just that I'm her lead-in; she is also my lead-in.
When I do really well at 8, she's likely to do really well at 9. If she does really well at 9, I'm likely to do really well at 10. If I do really well at 10, she's likely to do really well at 11.
So if she does better at 9 than I did at 8, I will do even better than I otherwise would have at 10, etc.
I did better than she did on Monday. She did better than I did on Tuesday. I did better than she did on Wednesday. But the point is, we're talking viewership totals above 1,500,000 in each of these hours, and "demo" viewerships in giddying numbers: 500,000; 600,000; 700,000. The shows are really profitable at something like 185,000 "demo" viewers (25 to 54's).
Also, I must again protest the Donahue Legend. For purposes of contrast, in his last month on the air in 2003, he averaged 439,000 viewers (tops at MSNBC at the time). Not demo viewers, total viewers. Rachel and I are talking to audiences three and four times Donahue's at his peak. He didn't help his longevity by his political stance, but he was cancelled because his ratings did not justify the expense of his show, which was probably more than Rachel's and mine combined. Here is the requisite link to Bill Carter's contemporary article in the NYT.

BONUS:
Olby provides a link to a 2003 NYTimes article about Donahue. Funny, I think the NYTimes can re-work an MSNBC press release with the best of 'em...but it is funny that Olbermann had to go find that article, like it wasn't already bookmarked by him...too dam funny.

Sorry, I forgot to provide the link to the actual story Olby was commenting on. It was just a simple congratulations shout out to Rachel, but Olby had to make sure he wasn't eclipsed by her spotlight and had to inject his long stupid rambling pathetic comment. LOSERS say ‘what’…
Trust me, this isn't so much about ratings, it's the perception that Rachel his 10X smarter than Olbermann. Here's a comment from a Kos blogger that is really the reason for Olbermann self-absorbed comment:
"To my mind, the trajectory of the two MSNBC programs is clear: Rachel's show is going to be better than "Countdown," and soon. Part of this, I think, is that Rachel Maddow is very likely the smartest person on cable news."

more great comments that’ll have Olbermann plotting Ms. Maddows demise…teehee:
My dirty little secret...
Can I admit it? I'm not a huge fan of Keith Olbermann. I'm super grateful that he's been on the air, don't get me wrong, but his style grates on me sometimes, and I catch him in hyperbole too often for my tastes.
But I love Rachel Maddow! I knew she was going to do well. She is so talented.

I gotta say...
she made me go out and buy a new sound card for the computer. Cable system doesn't have MSNBC so I'm limited to watching online, but even Olbermann withdrawal didn't drive me to the computer store. It took Maddow. I wanted to see the if the hype around here was justified.
It was worth the $35. She's great.

Not to say I told you so, but I told you so:

"At least finally the bathtub boy will not be bragging about his ratings anymore."-kb
Here's a prediction for MikeH's amusement:
Low Blow KO will take credit for Mz. Maddow's ratings.
His crappy ratings are driving him crazy. He is constantly getting his ass kicked. Correction, since he is a complete ass, I change that to say he is constantly getting the part of his body on the backside, middle kicked.
Olby the clown is getting desperate. I wouldn't be surprised if Keith "Czechoslovakia" Olbermann changes the name of his show to The O'lbermann Factor.
Ash, are you Ashley from J$P? I should know this; the "Czechoslovakia" nickname for Keith is a dead giveaway. Welcome to OlbyWatch.
On other note, I forgot to mention that in Olbermoronn's Worst nod for Lady Lynn, he applied OlbyLogic, deducing that the "bitter" crowd would like what Obama called them better than her referring to them as rednecks. In other words, Obamamann thinks Lady Lynn's term will drive people to Barack. Don't try to make sense of it. It's OlbyLogic.
