Earlier this afternoon we received the following email from Google:
Dear olbermannwatch,This is to notify you that we have removed or disabled access to the following material as a result of a notification by NBC Universal claiming that this material is infringing:
Keith Olbermann Disses Donald Trump on Carson Daly Show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxY2UQXz5vo
Please Note: Accounts determined to be repeat infringers may be terminated. To avoid this, please delete any videos to which you do not own the rights, and refrain from uploading infringing videos. For more information, please visit our Copyright Tips guide.
If you believe this claim was made in error, or that you are otherwise authorized to use the content at issue, you may file a counter notice. Information about this process is here.
Be aware that there may be adverse legal consequences in your country if you make a false or bad faith allegation of copyright infringement by using this process.
Sincerely,
The YouTube Content Identification Team
A short time later the entire Olbermann Watch channel was permanently deleted.
We have not seen the DMCA filing from NBC Universal but the only complaint we received from them was regarding an old interview of Keith Olbermann by Caron Daly. These videos have been online for years now, the Olbermann Watch channel had well over 1 million views and over 1,000 subscribers. It is also worth noting that some nearly identical videos of Keith Olbermann are still online now; a quick search shows over 11,000 videos when you search for "Olbermann" on YouTube.
We have responded to YouTube's Copyright department asking to see a copy of the DMCA complaint and contacted our lawyer.
Consider this Round One.
And then NBCU said to Keith: "You're welcome, my liege."
Seriously (though I was partially serious above), what's going to happen to all the videos embedded here at OlbyWatch?
Unbelievable.
Proof that the Leftist "Progressives", champions of tolerance, are in fact, the intolerant and fascist ones.
I'm struggling to understand why the entire channel was removed. I'm sure you'll fill us in with the juicy details as they come.
We're all behind you, Mr. Cox.
Tolerance is what the libs claim
But when you beat them at their own game
They change the rules
Because moonbats are tools
And they always need someone to blame
Seems like fair use to me
Whoa folks lets be reasonable here, there's a great chance there isn't a conspiracy going on. In fact I'm 100% sure there isn't.
I use to be a very heavy YouTube watcher. And over the years one of the biggest complaints was copyright mostly coming from channels themselves. In fact some companies are very protective of their content. NBC, Comedy Central, and Fox first come to mind. Usually people who post anyting related to those guys get removed.
I've been subscribed to a lot of channels and have seen this happen. Someone posts something funny ( and it is probably ) and later gets banned cause it was from network tv. They're very stingy on this.
One video that comes to mind is the Dick in the Box skit from SNL. It always got removed not too soon after being posted.
The reason they're so protective is they don't want full episodes spawning up on YouTube. Chances are someone flagged it for copywrite and it got taken seriously.
I've notice NBC material will disappear pretty fast. But I've heard the outcry from YouTube channels who wrongly met this fate. And last year a lot of the more popular channels were standing up for these people.
Problem is YouTube has really tight copyright rules. So its best to know who's safe to post and who isn't. But NBC, Fox, Comedy Central are the biggest ones who take the matter too far.
Did anyone check to see if KOS was gloating over this? I'll bet they're just having a big time blast..but like Robert said..."consider this round one" and it's going the distance.
With this move, NBC has restored the "good" name of Keith Olbermann prior to today. If only somebody had backups of the videos, or copies of them via RealPlayer. RealPlayer has the ability in Internet Explorer (and I think Mozilla Firefox, too) to download flash video to be saved to your (in general) hard drive.
