    February 28, 2008
I will be on NPR's Talk of the Nation this afternoon.

I am going to take some time out from the critical work I do here each day - making the world safe from the most dangerous man in journalism today - and waste it by discussing the International Olympic Committees recent decision to allow athletes and coaches to blog at the Beijing games this summer and such trivialities as the free speech implications, Chinese censorship of blogs and how issues like Darfur and Taiwan might come into play.

If you are not able to tune in live between 3 and 4 PM ET today you can listen via their web site once they get the podcast up at the NPR Talk of the Nation web site.

One of the other scheduled guests is supposed to be Tommie Smith who knows a little bit about what happens when Olympic athletes engage in free expression.

UPDATE: It's turned into media day for me with three different media appearance on three different topics. The web audio of the NPR Talk of the Nation broadcast is online at NPR.org I am quoted in a story on the new Internet Safety Technical Task Force. And yet another story on the battle between bloggers and journalists on PBS.org.

A few thoughts for President's Day

Today is the day we celebrate and give thanks for George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington and all the other great Presidents who have ruled over this country with an iron fist - and do our best to forget disastrous presidencies like those of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Anticipating no KO tonight, I've got a few notes and a sort of open thread for folks here.

Some readers have noticed we've been experimenting with various online services such as flickr, Del.icio.us, Feedburner, Technorati and others over the past year and now we're trying something that brings them all together in one place. Yahoo Pipes is a relatively new service which allows users to blend together various data and feeds into a single RSS feed. So, what we've done this weekend is to create a sort of Uber-Olby feed based on articles we "tag" using the Del.icio.us bookmarking service, Technorati searches for "high authority" blogs that tag posts with "Olbermann", our Flickr account full of KO photos, as Ebay, Google News/Blogs and a Wikipedia Watch List which monitors any changes to the Wikipedia Entries for "Keith Olbermann" and "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" which, as many regulars know are basically pro-KO propaganda managed by the OlbyLoons over at KO.org. All of these different information sources are aggregated into a single feed, auto-updated in real time and then passed through to Feedburner to display as a HTML feed. We set it up so the 5 most recent entries are displayed but you can click the "feedburner" link below it to either subscribe to that feed yourself or go back and reader previous entries. Basically, if anyone is writing about Keith on blogs, selling KO products on Ebay, commenting on a KO product on Amazon, if there are news stories about him, if someone is updating KO's Wikipedia entry, OlbyWatch will display that information here as it happens. One caution, there was a tremendous backlog of material when we created this particular "Yahoo Pipe" and it may take a few days for the software to "pull" all the old posts through the feed. So, keep an eye out but realize it is still a work in progress. If you are familiar with Yahoo Pipes and wish to suggest other feeds we might add to our Pipe post them below.

One item from an Amazon Forum for Keith latest "book" caught my eye when it came across the new Yahoo Pipe feed:

An Amazon customer wonders WHO could be flagging "negative" reviews of Keith's latest cut and paste job book. Gee, maybe the same OlbyLoons who did this with Keith's last "book" and "run" the Keith Olbermann Wikipedia entry?

Regular OW readers will recall that Keith specifically begged for positive Amazon reviews on Countdown which the fangirls over at KO.org then obligingly provided - all the while engaging in a campaign to manipulate the Amazon "abuse reporting" system to flag all negative comments. When OW encouraged readers to respond in kind they stepped up their campaign.

NOTE: It appears that my "RobertCox" account at KO.org has been deleted and every post I ever made on that site has been deleted as well. Apparently the trollgirls from KO.org did not like having their anonymous troll comments deleted over here.

Anyway, have a nice "George W. Bush" Day!

    OlbermannWatch Contributor's Note

As I am in charge of posting recaps this week, I apologize for not having Monday's, Tuesday's and Thursday's. Needless to say, they have all been DVRed. Unfortunately, I have to head out of town tonight and will not be back until the wee hours of Sunday morning. You can expect full recaps for the missed days on Sunday, including Friday. My apologies again, thanks for reading. Comments are open to whine about me.

Question for REGULAR Olbermann Watch readers

This post is NOT addressed to folks who just happened to stop by but those who consider themselves regular Olbermann Watch readers. If you are a regular reader please click the MORE link and join the discussion in the comments thread.

If you are reading this then you are identifying yourself as a REGULAR Olbermann Watch reader and so I want to hear from you.

I recently mentioned that some "blocking" software at schools and businesses is blocking Olbermann Watch. I suspect this is because in having a free and open comment policy we have allowed ANY sort of language on the site and given the nature of OlbyLoons and far-left trolls, this has resulted in a good deal of "bad" words being on the site.

I am not sure whether it is possible to do a massive FIND/REPLACE to cull through the database and clean up the "bad" words but if it is possible then I propose to undertake that effort.

That issue got me thinking about some of the trolls on Olbermann Watch. They have always come and gone and it is always best to just deal with trolls by ignoring them. As they realize they are being ignored the motivation to post - getting a rise out of others - diminishes and they move on to some other place where they can display their pathological need for attention and validation for their pathetic lives.

It is possible using the Movable Type software to block IP addresses and there are ways to use black lists and white lists and some other new features of the software to discourage trolling, the use of bad language and other unwanted behavior. I have tested comment moderation options but was never happy with them - and the MT TypeKey thing is a pathetic joke. None of it is bulletproof and a motivated spammer or troll can always find ways to get to a site that is otherwise "open" as is the case with Olbermann Watch. At the same time, putting up various hurdles combined with a general "do not feed the trolls" agreement among regular readers can reduce (not eliminate) bad behavior.

My primary interest is to have as much discussion and debate as possible. I am NOT interested in suppressing liberal or Pro-KO or anti-GOP/Bush points of view. One of the things I personally enjoy the most on Olbermann Watch is reading the comments and those comments would be pretty dull if you had to pass some litmus test in order to comment. Further, there are enough times when the comment threads really click that the wide open policy justifies itself.

My concern is that things may be out of balance. That by allowing people who exhibit bad behavior or use objectionable language to keep posting comments we DO get new comments generated which APPEARS to increase the activity of the site. My concern is always about the dogs that are not barking. How many readers DO NOT comment or who are otherwise driven away from the site because of a few bad apples.

What say you, good readers of Olbermann Watch?

    Media Matters Loves Olbermann Watch

I've noticed an increasing amount of traffic to Olbermann Watch from the Media Matters for America web site. Seems we've been added to their listed of "watched" media sites.

While there I found this exchange in the comments section of a recent post on Keith Olbermann naming John Gibson a WPIW. I was particularly interested in...

    ...the exchange after this comment:

You guys need to go to www.olbermannwatch.com It provides more facts than you want to know. * - CaseySpring / Monday April 30, 2007 03:29:37 PM EST

The next guy says "Unfortunately, I can't access via my work firewall to see what yer yammering about. It is apparently classified as a "hate" speech site."

This got me wondering whether other folks have found Olbermann Watch blocked work or school or anything like that. Of course, the MediaMattersLoon has it wrong, Olbermann Watch would not have been classified as a "hate" site but we may well have been flagged for bad language due to the constant use of bad language by the OlbyLoons. I'm not sure what it will take to "clean up" the site to remove words being flagged by blocking software but if I hear that this is not an isolated incident I might have to take some action.

The Bye-Man: Imus Dropped by MSNBC

MSNBC drops simulcast of Don Imus show

    No surprise here.

What does it say about the judgment of Dan Abrams and Phil Griffin that they've been foremost in defending their belated decision to suspend Imus for two weeks as sufficient - and why do they still have their jobs?

Meanwhile...anyone else smell a week-late "special comment" coming from Keith "don't shoot your own side" Olbermann now that the Imus is safely gone?

    Olbermann Watch FAQ

We've updated the FAQ again and posted it below. If you have any questions not covered in the FAQ let us know and maybe we'll add your question.

    Olbermann Watch FAQ

    Q. If Keith Olbermann is so unimportant why do you have a whole web site devoted to attacking him?
    A. Keith Olbermann is the most dangerous man on television today and must be stopped!

    Q. Why do you hate Olbermann more than Bill O'Reilly?
    A. We don't "hate" Olbermann...we pity him.

    Q. Why are you singling out Keith Olbermann when others [insert name here] are far worse?
    A. Keith is far worse than anyone else. He is the most dangerous man on television today (see above)

    Q. What about the Olbermann - O'Reilly Feud?
    A. What about it?

    Q. Haven't Olbermann ratings improved?
    A. From when he first launched they are up slightly, from the all-time lows in 2004 he is up a good deal off a very low base (113,000 per night in the demo). Keith had a recent spurt in the ratings between September and November and has been in decline since the 2006 election. Basically he is up more than this detractors want to admit and now as much as the hype would seem to indicate. The show is still a very low-rated show and often finishes 3rd or 4th in the ratings.

    Q. When is Keith Olbermann's contract with MSNBC up?
    A. March 1st, 2011.

    Q. What's the deal with the countdown clock?
    A. We have a countdown clock until the big day when Keith's contract expires on the home page.

    Q. When did Countdown first air?
    A. We weren't really paying attention. Technically there were two different shows, Countdown:Iraq and Countdown with Keith Olbermann back in 2003. Keith told Brian Lamb on C-SPAN, "My first show the second time around was March 31st, 2003." He ought to know so I suppose that's right.

    Q. When did you start Olbermann Watch?
    A. The site was officially launched on November 30, 2004 as an offshoot of another blog which began covering Olbermann in 2003.

    Q. Why did you start Olbermann Watch?
    A. Fear. OK. Not really. What really got me going on Keith was expressed in my post MSNBC Defines Deviancy Down as Keith Olbermann's Internet-feuled Jihad on Journalistic Ethics Continues from late 2004.

    Q. Why does Olbermann Watch have the tag line "reality-based news for the belligerently uninformed"?
    A. Well the first part "reality-based" comes from journalist and author Ron Susskind who wrote in The New York Times that a senior Bush aide used that term to describe the way the Bush White House understood the world. The last part "belligerently uninformed" comes from Keith himself who used that term in a newspaper interview to describe me and the other folks who helped launch Olbermann Watch. We kinda liked it and so adopted the term as our own. Thanks Keith!

    Q. Is Olbermann Watch really that #1 "Olbermann" blog on the web?
    A. Yep! The rankings change all the time so we always have to check to answer this question. But for the past couple of years we have been the top non-MSNBC blog during that time based on Technorati, Truth Laid Bare Ecosystem, Google and any other ranking we could find. For more than a week in March 2007 we took the site down which meant a loss of traffic, expiration of some links and an overall drop in many of the rankings. It will take several weeks for the site to fully recover but it was and is the #1 Keith Olbermann blog during that period. We have always been well ahead of all the KO fans sites and forums in terms of traffic, page views, Google Page Rank and all of the meaningful metrics by which web sites area measured. And, before you ask, yep...the OlbyLoons really, really hate that.

    Q. Didn't this Olbermann guy have a real serious head injury a few years ago?
    A. Yes. He bumped his head entering a car on the #7 train out by Shea Stadium. He told Brian Lamb all about it on C-SPAN.

    Q. If his ratings are so bad then why do you feel it necessary to devote any time (let alone an entire website) to his show ?
    A. The going battle for truth and justice has nothing to do with ratings. We are doing God's work.

    Q. Why do you make such a big deal about ratings?
    A. We don't. Keith does. As long as he and his pals in the left-wing media continue to harp on his supposed "ratings success" we will continue to point out when they are lying, exaggerating or manipulating the truth.

    Q. Why do you make such a big deal about "the 25-54 year old demo"?
    A. This is a corollary to the ratings issue. As was the case with the failed Air America Radio network, MSNBC has sought to redefine the battlefield, so to speak, by comparing themselves to their competitors in terms of a narrow slice of the overall cable new audience where the viewership gap is smaller in terms of raw numbers. They can't compete in the "P2+" or "total viewer" ratings race so they try shift the focus away from straight up audience comparisons. While ALL segments of the audience are important, and the 25-54 "demo" is used as the basis for setting ad rates it is less significant in the TV news business because the viewers tend to be older. We usually mention it in the context of Keith, MSNBC or the MSM TCA crowd promoting the demo ratings as "proof" that Keith has a large and growing audience which he does not.

    Q. Why do you make such a big deal out of "Live" and "Live Plus" ratings?
    A. This is a corollary to the ratings issue as well. At the request of the broadcast networks, Nielsen Media Research began to report new sets of ratings data that included estimates on how many viewers were recording shows on DVRs (Tivos) and watching them later. They then sought to pressure advertisers into paying for these viewers. The advertisers balked on the grounds that Tivo viewers were not likely to watch ads and the networks ultimately caved in and sold ads based only on the live data. It became an issue with Olbermann because most Tivo users are also in the Demo so MSNBC stood to gain more than their competitors because they get a larger share of their audience from within the demo. But what what made it a big issue for Olbermann Watch is that we caught TVNewser manipulating the ratings data to boost Keith's numbers; he switched from "Live" to "Live Plus" ratings in early 2006 without informing his readers and without any sort of disclaimer.

    Q. Why are you so critical of TVNewser?
    A. The blogger at TVNewser, Brian Stelter, is a well-known apologist for Keith Olbermann and a flack for MSNBC. As such as he is part of the KO Spin machine and so we like to expose him for being the hack we know him to be. We have caught him red-handed lying on his blog and even posting false statements on THIS blog.

    Q. Why do my posts appear twice?
    A. Sometimes our server cannot keep up with the heavy volume of traffic on the site so commenters will get a server error message. Instead of hitting the "back" button and refreshing the page to see if the comment appears on the site they resubmit the comment and it appears twice (sometimes more depending on how determined they are). Someday soom we hope to move to a bigger server and get some better software (you can advertise on our site if you really care!). We moved to a new, more powerful server in January 2007 and this problem has almost entirely disappeared.

    Q. Is Keith Olbermann the "Edward R. Murrow of our generation"?
    A. No.

    Q. Does Keith Olbermann speak truth to power?
    A. Only when he is talking to a light bulb.

    Q. Did you delete my comment because you disagree with me?
    A. We never delete comments because we "disagree" with them no matter how idiotic. We delete spam. If your posted a perfectly legit comments and it deleted that would have only been the result of an error and we would try to fix it if you tell us about it.

    Q. How come all you do is write negatively about Keith?
    A. We don't. We have always been willing to allow any pro-KO point of view on the site including comments, guest posts and contributors. We have a standing offer, open to anyone including OlbyLoons, to accept KO-centric guest posts. Ideally they would be about 250 words and reasonably well-written. They can be from ANY political view point but the person has to provide a name or screen name and some way for readers to contact that person like an email address (hotmail or otherwise). We might publish a post anonymously but it is not likely. We recently added Doug Krile as a contributor to write Pro-KO posts.

    Q. You keep saying that Keith "lied", can you back that up with proof?
    A. Yes. Just read the site every day and you will come to see that he lies pretty much every time he opens his mouth. Sometimes we even make lists but with Keith it is hard to keep current on his latest lies and distortions. Like I said, keep watching Countdown and keep reading Olbermann Watch. You might also want to check out his infamous Hoosier Gazette story. For a sports guy, even we were surprised to catch KO out on this story when he began claiming that Bill O'Reilly lied about his college football career at Marist College.

    Q. You say that Keith lifts materials from blogs without attribution, can you back that up?
    A. Sure. These days, as part of the marketing strategy for the show, Keith has been better about crediting blue blogs like Think Progress, Media Matters for America and Crooks and Liars but he has lifted material from all of them. Here's one from Media Matters that got my pals over there steamed up.

    Q. Does Keith Olbermann read this blog?
    A. Of course, all time time. He used to come in via the msnbc.com Secaucus server but wised up and now comes in via an anonymizer service. He is a regular.

    Q. Come on! You mean that Keith Olbermann actally knows about this site?
    A. Yep...and he has bitched about it many times in the press including The New York Observer, The Hartford Courtant, and talk radio. He has also made numerous indirect comemnts about Olbermann Watch. We have also been prominently mentioned in KO stories from the Associated Press, Online Journalism Review, The Washington Post, PBS and many more.

    Q. You claim that Keith lifts material from Olbermann Watch, is that really true?
    A. Yep. Sometimes we put little codes in things so we can track him like when he lifted some radio show audio from OlbyWatch. Or the time he reworked something I wrote on logical fallacies and used that in his opening monologue. Or shortly after I linked an Op-Ed piece I wrote for the McClatchy newspaper chain on Holmes' dissent in Abrams - the famed "marketplace of ideas" dissent.

    Q. Why do you display a picture of Keith Olbermann giving the Nazi salute?
    A. As a sign of his hypocrisy. There are two versions on this site. One with a Bill O'Reilly mask (that one is real) and the other is with an Adolph Hilter mask (I photoshopped that one) Keith has editorialized on the use of Nazi imagery by others yet has often done the same thing himself. The Nazi Salute image is just a classic example of Olbypocrisy. We sent the picture to the Anti-Defamation League and the ADL condemned Keith for it.

    Q. Why do you keep using the phrases "infamous, deplorable", or "discredited sports guy"?
    A. I will let J$ answer that one. He writes "Our favorite phrases for Keith are ones he uses on others. He referred to 'the infamous, deplorable Matt Drudge' when telling a lie about him, so we put the phrase into the rotation. Similarly, Robert Novak was identified not as a columnist, but as 'the discredited columnist', Roger Ailes a 'Fat Ass', Chris Wallace a 'monkey', etc. The latest addition to the rotation: 'slovenly political hack'." Many of Olbermann's most outrageous personal attacks are documented in The Olbersaurus.

    Q. What is the Olbermann Manhood Quotient?
    A. Keith made a big deal about Bill O'Reilly when the O.J. book controversy erupted. In addition to lying that O'Reilly didn't criticize his own network, Keith insisted that anyone who is critical of others should be just as critical of his own network, or he has "no manhood". So we are holding Keith Olbermann to his own standards. He attacks Fox (and occasionally CNN) based on items he lifts from his favorite blue blog sources, but you won't find him going after MSNBC, despite the fact that those same sources routinely do. Periodically we tally these discrepancies and report the Olbermann Manhood Quotient. The last time we checked, it was limp, or so we heard.

    Q. What's with the sound effects, like [Ding!]?
    A. Keith is praised by the gullible as a brilliant wordsmith. In fact, he relies on repetitive, hoary cliches, along with special OlbySpin terms. So sometimes we'll ring the bell when he uses terms like "escalation", "throw under the bus", "proverbial", "Nixonian", "metaphor", etc.

    Q. Why do some people on OlbyWatch reference Keith Olbermann and a phone booth?
    A. On his radio show, shortly before leaving to become White House Press Secretary, Tony Snow said you could fit all of Keith's friends inside a phone booth. We thought that was funny. What makes it funny is that its kinda true.

    Q. Why are you obsessed with Keith Olbermann?
    A. Are we?

    Q. Don't you have something better to do than obsess about Keith Olbermann?
    A. Not that I can think of.

    Q. What's the deal with the labels on certain comments?
    A. As noted on the site "To assist clear-thinking OW readers we have implemented a color-coded warning system to quickly identify inane comments made by the tinfoil hat brigade. Kooky comments will be clearly marked easy-to-recognize Loony-Level warning icons. No longer will you need to spend your precious time trying to understand the nonsensical ravings of lunatic minds. When you see a Loony-Level warning icon just skip right down to the next sensible comment." Unfortunately, too many OlbyLoons took to posting gross images on the site so we had to disable to the HTML in comments and so those labels are no longer visible on the site. If we ever get new software maybe we can fix that.

    Q. What's an OlbyLoon?
    A. Generally, any person who is a fan of Keith Olbermann or otherwise takes him seriously. If you have ever said "He's the Edward R. Murrow of our generation" then you are an OlbyLoon. If you have ever said "Keith is speaking truth to power" then you are an OlbyLoon. If you have ever said "you go, girl" while watching Keith deliver a "special comment" then you are an OlbyLoon. If you come to a site dedicated to mocking Keith Olbermann and leave comments on the site bitching about how unfairly Keith is treated on that site then you are an OlbyLoon. If you get into an argument with the editor of this site you are also probably an OlbyLoon; at the very least you are most likely wrong.

The DSM IV criteria for the diagnosis of "Olbyloon Disorder"

    * 101.00A/2 Olbyloon Disorder / Olbermannia (see also, Bush Derangement Syndrome)

    A. A pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of non-leftists such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

    1. suspects, without sufficient basis, that non-leftists are exploiting, harming, or deceiving him or her

    2. is preoccupied with unjustified doubts about the loyalty or trustworthiness of non-leftists

    3. is reluctant to confide in others because of unwarranted fear that the information will be used maliciously against him or her by Olbermannwatch

    4. reads hidden demeaning or threatening meanings into benign remarks or events

    5. persistently bears grudges, i.e., is unforgiving of insults, injuries, or slights to Olbermann

    6. perceives attacks on his or Olbermann's character or reputation that are not apparent to others and is quick to react angrily or to counterattack

    7. Stubbornly defends every statement from Keith Olbermann.

    B. Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a mood disorder with psychotic features, or another psychotic disorder and is not due to the direct physiological effects of a general medical condition.

    Q. Do you really have a Keith Olbermann Book Club?
    A. No. That was just for fun.

    Q. What is the "mini-blog"?
    A. It is sub-section of the site created using a Del.icio.us (Yahoo!) service that turns bookmarked web pages about Keith Olbermann into a smaller version of the main blog. That mini-blog is spliced into the main RSS feed for the site.

    Q. What's the deal with the RSS feed?
    A. RSS is the greatest thing since sliced bread and the BEST way to read Olbermann Watch. You can read all about it here

    Q. What's the deal with the limericks?
    A. I don't know. One reader started writing them and then lots of other folks joined in. We will update the complete list periodically.

    Q. Why is Bob Cox so much smarter than all the OlbyLoons?
    A. It is a combination of things really. Cox is very, very smart. And most OlbyLoons are very, very dumb.

    Q. Why do you list Olbermann fan sites on your blog roll?
    A. We believe that the best way to expose OlbyLoonThink is to provide out clear-thinking readers an opportunity to see OlbyLoons in their natural habitat.

    Q. What the deal with Olbermann and Wikipedia?
    A. I debated Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales on the failure of the "Neutral Point of View" policy to deal with entries such as those for Keith Olbermann and Countdown with Keith Olbermann which are co-opted by OlbyLoons seeking to promote their sycophantic view of Keith Olbermann and their far-left political agenda. You can learn more on the PBS.org site.

    Q. Why do you say Olbermann is partisan when he is just telling the truth about you $#%@!! Repukes! and your @!!%@@* Chimp! and your $%^^&!!war!!!!!!!
    A. You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!

    Q. Why do you make such a big deal about Olbermann's refusal to have dissenting points of view on his program?
    A. It is just one of many ways in which we highlight the obvious liberal bias in the show. J$ keeps a running tally of guests of different political persuasions. Almost all guests and analysts are liberal/Democrat. A very easy way to get on Countdown is to register as a Republican, get yourself elected somewhere and then criticize Bush. Keith's bookers will be wining and dining you faster than you can say "Katy Tur".

    Q. What is the deal with Olbermann's orange face or "man tan"?
    A. Keith has had problems with the make-up people who "do" his face before he goes on the air. Some nights his skin tone is decidedly orange. This problem has dissipated somewhat since Olbermann Watch readers began pointing it out and we made fun of him.

    Q. Why is Olby gone half the time?
    A. Keith is a big believer in using all his vacation days, sick days and personal days. And strangely, his co-workers at MSNBC never seem to complain that Keith is not around enough.

    Q. What's the deal with Olby and 22-year old23-year old girls?
    A. No comment.

    Q. Why all the references to Olby and the bathtub?
    A. John Gibson used to fill in for Keith on MSNBC. On the radio one day, Gibson said that one of the reason he guest-hosted so often is that there were many days when the MSNBC limo would go to pick up Keith and he would be in his bathtub and refuse to come out. Word on the street is that he was not speaking metaphorically.

    Q. Why does Olby have such a man-crush on Joe Wilson, Dana Milbank, John Dean and Howard Fineman?
    A. Keith likes these men. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

    Q. Why does Olbermann have David Brock write his script every night?
    A. Keith is very busy in the afternoons bathing and doing an hour on ESPN radio with Dan Patrick.

    Q. Why is David Shuster considered a serious reporter?
    A. Who said that?

    Q. Why doesn't Olbermann just have Jason Leopold guest host for him?
    A. Leopold refuses to jeopardize his journalistic reputation by appearing with Keith.

    Q. Is Countdown supposed to be a news show?
    A. Ironically, yes.

    Q. Why does Keith hide under his desk?
    A. Because he can't fit under the coffee table.

    Q. What's your policy on comment moderation?
    A. We generally do not moderate the comments. We will delete/ban if someone is spamming the site or otherwise being disruptive. Usually they will get a warning. Occassionally we edit a comment for length (for example, someone repeateing the words "Keith Olbermann rocks!" 400 times may be cut to just 4 times). Sometimes, if I am in the mood, I will not give a warning. Overall, it's just best that folks stay on topic and not be annoying - right, left or otherwise.

    Q. Do you review all comments?
    A. Sometimes. Just remember, there are no absolutes.

    Q. Do you read all comments?
    A. Sometimes.

    Q. Why do some comment threads say "this comment thread is now closed?
    A. Because once the spammers find open threads on a blog they keep pounding those threads with comment spam and I think we all get enough Viagra and Free Poker as it is.

    Q. How long do you keep comment threads open?
    A. As long as possible but that usually means 2-4 weeks.

    Q. Why do you close some comment threads and not others?
    A. We try and close them all after a month unless they are active. Sometimes we miss a few. Have you ever SEEN the admin side of a Movable Type installation. It is a really pain to work with.

    Q. Has anyone affiliated with this website ever touched a woman?
    A. Not sure.

    Q. Do frequent visitors to this site suffer from the same genetic disorder?
    A. No. Each visitor has his or her own disorder.

    Q. Who are you idiots?
    A. We are the smartest people in the world who have taken time out of our busy day to enlighten the masses.

    Q. Exactly how many moonbats does it take to keep Keith on the air?
    A. Not many, judging from his ratings.

    Q. Would forcing Gitmo detainees to watch Olbermann's show be against the rules of the Geneva Convention?
    A. Clearly.

    Q. Are you as stupid as you sound?
    A. Probably.

    Q. Why do you sometimes display a picture of David Shuster upside down?
    A. We post it upside down because he has been so thoroughly, utterly discredited. And besides, he turns the truth on its head. It is, as Olbermann might say, a "metaphor"

    Should MSNBC Fire Don Imus?

Last week our own J$ posted an audio clip from John Gibson playing comments made by Don Imus on MSNBC about players on the Rutgers women's basketball team which have been described as racist.

Listen for yourself and let us know what you think.

Here's the video of Imus' racist comments and his second try at an apology from this morning.

    New Olbermann Watch Ad Campaign

As part of the newly relaunched Olbermann Watch I have been asking for (and getting) some really nice support from other clear-thinking bloggers out there. One in particular is Terri at Webloggin who is running a lower resolution version of the ad below on some of the sites he manages. I am hardly a graphic designer as long-time readers know based on the old site design but it's not terrible is it?
(note: you might be able to watch it better if you right click and open the image in a new tab)

    ow-blogadFINAL.gif

As they are helping OlbyWatch, I would encourage readers here to go check out the blogs, see if you can find our ad and say hello over there.

    OlbermannWatch.com Update

As mentioned in the comments the other day, we've been making some changes to the site. After deciding to bring OlbyWatch back from the dead we decided if we were in for a penny we ought to be in for a pound so we are going to actually try and promote the site and see if we can monetize it to then promote it even more.

Here's a list of some of the recent changes...

    - Layout
    - Masthead
    - Web Server
    - Favicon (the little pic next to the URL in your browser)
    - Google Ads
    - Text Link Ads
    - OlbyWatch YouTube Channel
    - Bookmarking/Sharing Chicklets (del.icio.us, Digg, Fark, My Yahoo, etc.)
    - Technorati's "view blog reactions" on each post

And here's stuff we put back in from the old site...

    - Recent Comments
    - Blog Ads
    - OlbyWatch Surveys
    - Blogroll/Keith Lovers (better organized)
    - Blogroll/Keith Watchers (greatly expanded)
    - updated KO Countdown Clock (boo!)
    - OlbyWatch Book Club
    - KO Mini-Blog (del.icio.us link roll)
    - Red Meat Mini-Blog (del.icio.us link roll)
    - OlbyWatch in the News (updated)
    - RSS Feed Chicklets (expanded)

Comments or suggestions are welcome. If you have questions about any of this let me know and I will endeavor to explain here.

These days we are bouncing between 1,300 and 1,700 unique visitors a day. As a first step in promoting Olbermann Watch we would like to bump that up north of 2,000. If you want to support the site and help us push through the 2,000 makr there are a couple important ways you can do that:

    1) support our advertisers - if you see a link that interests follow it.

    2) bookmark/share using the new "chicklets" - we want to be visible in places like Del.icio.us, Digg, Fark and all the rest so if you use any of those services for sharing posts that interest you please make it a habit to "click the chicklets""

    3) watch our videos and go rate them on YouTube.

    4) if you have a blog please blogroll us and ask your blogger friends to do like wise.

    Thanks for your support.

    Brilliant Article on Keith Olbermann

In what may be the best article ever written about Keith Olbermann, Robert Zeliger of Gannett's Journal News (Westchester) interviews the world's leading authority on Keith Olbermann for the LoHud's Suburbarazzi blog.

In Olbermann Watch decides to keep on keeping on...It's never been a better time to hate on Keith, Zeliger writes:

Robert Cox, the founder of Olbermann Watch, the site that obsessively (some say neurotically) tracks everything the MSNBC host does on his primetime show, isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Last week, he announced his site would be shutting down, after NBC decided to throw wads of cash at Olbermann. But Cox quickly changed his mind after receiving hundreds of passionate emails (and a flood of press attention).

    Clear-Thinker Letters to the Editor

Through the dark times when Olbermann Watch was shut down, it was the letters from our loyal and now suffering readers that gave us the courage and determination to continue.

    Subject: NOOOOOOO

OW was my favorite web site. I checked it at least twice a day. I thought you were just kidding saying it was going to end. I feel like Keith won. Very depressing.

    - Becky
    ===================================

    Subject: WHAT?!

So I go to visit one of my favorite sites this afternoon, olbermannwatch.com, and it moves me to a RIP page. Is this just a bad joke? You are letting the liberal olberidiots win by shutting down your site. I can understand your reasons for wanting to close the site down, that it is sometimes counterproductive to the mission of OW in that it gets more people to watch Countdown and therefore--possibly artificially--increases his ratings. Even so, it saddens me to see this site being shut down.

Though I rarely posted due to the nonsensical ramblings of many "olbyloons" I visited the site every morning to keep my eye on what Olbermann was doing so that I could more accurately know about his biases. There were many times that I referred people on billoreilly.com to OW to help show them they type of person Olbermann is. I am now going to have to watch the segments of Countdown on msnbc.com, like I usually do, and pay more attention to what he says and to what his guests say.

Truly, I hope you all will reconsider, although it seems like this decision is fairly final. But I will continue to hope. Good luck to you all.

    - Justin
    ===================================

Subject: Sad to see you go

You guys put a smile on my face.
Great job & Good luck in the future!

    Subject: Say it Ain't so

In the wake of the end of Olbermannwatch.com I dedicate this one to you

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=dwnqqj5Q1BU

    - Mary
    ===================================

Subject: sorry to see you're gone

I have been an avid reader of Olbermannwatch.com for some time now and looked forward to your daily report on Keith's latest idiocy each morning. I am sorry to see you have taken your site down.

    - Kevin
    ===================================

    Subject: Please Don't!

I hope you'll reconsider the closing of olbermannwatch.com. While not a regular Countdown viewer, I read your site daily, and appreciate all the homework you've done exposing the hypocrisy and arrogance of the most biased "news" show on television. I'll miss it very much if it's really gone for good.

    - Dave
    ===================================

    Subject: Dullberman

Say it ain't so, Joe. Olbermannwatch was one of my daily reads. I don't see any indication of "more harm than good." Any person or sites that point out Dulbermann's hypocrisy is sure to do more good over the long haul. I implore you to reconsider and bring Olbermannwatch.com back. It isn't over. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, no! And it ain't over now. Don't give up. Don't ever give up.

    - Joe
    ===================================

    Subject: Re: OlbermannWatch signing off...

I totally understand even though I'll REALLY miss your site a LOT!!

Good luck with anything you do in the future!

    - Paul
    ===================================

    Subject: No way!

I will really miss this site. I will not watch the show, so I need this site to keep up with the crazy shit this guy pulls. If the decision is up in the air in any way, I for one would really like to see the site continue. Thanks

    - matt
    ===================================

    Subject: Thanks

Sorry to see Olbywatch go away.

I just wanted to offer my personal thanks to you for the public service you have done over the years in exposing the hypocrisy, bias and lack of journalistic integrity that is Keith Olbermann.

I wish you well in your future endeavors.

    Good luck and God bless.

    - Bob
    ===================================

    Subject: Please Keep Olbermannwatch ALIVE!

I could not stand to watch his show so this is the only way I can keep tabs on his spin.

    Please reconsider!

    Thank you,

    John
    ===================================

    Subject: Thank you

I want to thank you, and of course Johnny $ for your valiant efforts these many months. OW had become a daily must for me. Though I never posted, I thoroughly enjoyed the recaps by Johnny and you own observations concerning the malodorous one. Almost as enjoyable was the daily reassurance that the far left continues to rant, rave and make no sense. “They” are simply not serious people. It is surely frustrating that the MSM and the vitriolic, venomous left may continue to ignore KO’s incredible shortcomings as a “journalist”, his breathtaking hypocrisy, and his complete disregard for truth. As we clear thinkers are aware, there is no more intolerant, hateful and disingenuous coterie than those who refer to themselves as progressive.

Again, your efforts were appreciated by more decent people than you probably know. Thank you, and take heart; the ultimate truths are on our side.

    - Mike
    ===================================

    Subject: Closing Down Site

Now it seems Olbymoron won. I went to this site first every night before any others. This site opened my eyes to the fact that Olbermann is a fraud, a monkey posing as a newscaster. Without your site I would have never known that. I hate to see him "win". Now he'll be unstoppable.

    David
    ===================================

    Subject: Farewell Olbermannwatch!

    Sigh. Sniff sniff.

    - H
    ===================================

    Subject: Thanks!

I had fun posting on olbermannwatch and will miss it.

    - anon
    ===================================

    Subject: DRAT!

Thanks for the effort and the site!

It was fun but you may be correct. Perhaps when he does implode you could just post a greatest hits page that makes up the quirky backbone of the internet.

Kudos especially for hosting a wild west open forum!

Truly few people have cojones like that on the internet.

    - anon
    ===================================

    Subject: Thanks

Covering Olby as long as you did is heroic enough. I honestly don't know how Johnny $ could sit thru his show everynight. Thanks for the site, it was a daily read for me and best of luck with whatever is in your future.

    - Dave
    ===================================

    Subject: Please come back.

You were a beacon of truth and light and all those things that the Olybloons THINK that Olbermann is but really isn't. We need a forum to point out his lies and distortions. You saw how he would react to things that were said about him on Owatch, you have to KNOW that it made an impact. Olbermann's ratings went up because he began to pander to the extreme left. It won't last. I believe Owatch made a difference and it needs to exist in cybserspace. Please reconsider.

    - anon
    ===================================

    Subject: Thanks

Thank you so much for all you’ve done with Olbermann Watch.I will miss what has come to be an important part of my day.One day KO will implode or explode and you will have the last laugh.

    - Bill
    ===================================

    Subject: shutdown

Well, this stinks, because I only discovered your site about 2 months ago. Whatever are the girls at OlbermannWatchWatchers or whatever it was going to do now?

    Alex
    ===================================

Can't believe you are going to let a propagandist like KeithO run around without any checks and balances. Surely it made your stomach churn to watch him blurt out his deceptions, but you did a great documenting them. Now he has broken his leash. Look out. We can only hope he gets hit by a car.

    - Benson
    ===================================

    Subject: Shame....

It's a shame to see you go. I went here because I couldn't stand to watch the show.

Good luck on your new endeavors!

The depth of this man's stupidity is staggering -- I'll miss OlbyWatch, but I understand your rationale. I think you are right about this. I watched this site for about a year. It was fun to see someone knock this asshole down on every one of his stupid positions. He will eventually crash - and has left a trail of so much idiocy that will prevent him from ever rising again.

Thanks for the site - but I think you are doing the right thing.

Subject: Regarding your Removal of Website

I can say with 100% certainty that I was quite disappointed to come home today from work and find the website no longer with us. Beyond the distain for Mr. Olbermann's "journalistic ethics", I truly found this forum to be a valuable asset for the debating and exchanging of ideas.

In spite of contracts being renewed, I do believe that there is a place in the cyberworld for what you have brought to all of us. Without question, I would respect your decision if you chose to not bring it back to life, but hope that you have second thoughts.

If, in fact, you do choose to leave it vacant, I truly want to thank both you and J$ for the thankless job you have done over the last several years shedding light on a brand of hypocrisy that had been ignored all too often.

In any event, I wish you nothing but the best.

    Subject: Re: OW

A great site is gone, and Olby might just refer to it by name in a victorious Dean-esque tone now that it no longer exists. I sincerely hope the shutdown was not a financial decision as it would have been easy to get funding for it from fans. It wouldn’t surprise me if one of them would buy the site outright if offered the chance. Cox’s reasoning was a bit weak for the closure IMO, slightly higher ratings and press love are no reason to disband.

    ===================================

Closing your site is the media equivalent of an immediate pullout of U.S. forces from Iraq. It is an admission of defeat. If you cannot maintain the site due to your other obligations, then so be it and I wish you good luck. But if it is, as you state in the RIP, due to your concern that the site has done more harm than good....then I totally disagree. The blueblogs and MSM would have promoted Olby and facilitated his success (modest as it still is) no matter if your site existed or not.

We (anti-Olby forces) have no where else to go...perhaps you could post some alternatives to your site if there is no way you will return. Is there anyone else who does what you do? If not...that is exactly my point!!!! DON'T DO THIS!!! Regardless of whatever you choose, good luck and GREAT THANKS ;)

Yes, his new contract is a blow to all of us who support decency in broadcasting. However, with people like Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Laura Ingraham, Shawn Hannity, Mark Levin, Mike Gallagher, Rush Limbaugh, Neal Bortz, Micheal Savage, Michelle Malkin, and Don Imus “OlbermannWatch” will never die. Plus, if Olbermann continues with his charades I may have to add Anderson Cooper to the stated list. Thanks for the fun and for the late night cure to the worst person in all of news broadcasting.

    Subject: olby

First, great job on the olby site. I only recently came upon it when a friend (I use the term loosely), who happens to be an olbyloon, told me about it. I started out just as a reader, saved me from having to have to watch it, one of the best things about it! Then, I jump into the posting pool, after discovering there seemed to be more olbyloons than olbydislikers, to put it nicely. You have to wonder about the people who so wildly defended him, given the crap he puts on the air and some of the crap he doesn't cover.

    Subject: Re: Shutting Down Site

I have enjoyed your daily deconstructing the Misinformation Channel's (MSNBC) Countdown with Keith Monkey-in-a-Suit. I understand your stated reason for shutting down. Maybe you also are weary of fighting the good fight. But for some reason that escapes me he has been given a new four year contract and will be seen on the regular NBC news program. The fact that he is spreading like a malignant cancer is no reason to stop calling him on his lies. I would be even more inclined to inform your readers each night of his lies, misstatements, etc. But that's just me.

    - J
    ===================================

    Subject: Thank you

You and "Johnny Dollar" did a great job with the site. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to sit there, night after night, listening to all of KO's half-truths and condescension, and slander of our government. It's just hard to believe that NBC has elevated Keith to such heights, with the new contract and new exposure. Kind of like "when good things happen to bad people".

I just read that the ratings for Brian Williams are down 570,000! That's a huge amount, and shows that people ARE leaving NBC in droves!

Anyway, I wanted to express my appreciation for the site.

    - Joann
    ===================================

The abrupt nature of the shutdown sure was disapointing (and not particularly sensitive to the site's fans). And Robert's letter also left something to be desired... it had me thinking that the OWatch site had been hacked and that an Olbyloon was spoofing a Robert Cox shutdown letter.

If the decision to shut down was financial, I wish we would have had a chance to contribute to help the site contine.

Olbermann Watch is needed now more than ever with Keith now being elevated and lauded by the mainstream media. I’m sure you saw the recent article in Rolling Stone entitled, “Keith Olbermann: The Most Honest Man in News”. Granted, Rolling Stone is not exactly fair and balanced, but given Keith’s reputation, the title simply hilarious.

My mom and two sisters are hopelessly liberal who think Keith is “awesome” – who knows how many more misguided individuals there are out there. An Olbermann watchdog site is needed now more than ever….Keith’s assault on honest objective journalism must be stopped. Until now, Olbermann Watch was a force for good out there. You simply can’t throw in the towel right now. Please reconsider.

I am disappointed that you've decided to discontinue OlbermannWatch. It was a major useful forum to document Keith's disinformation campaign. I understand your decision and respect it. I've noted the major crowing pro-Olbermann and liberal extremist sites are exhibiting at the moment complete with their own lies not only about the site, but your reasons for taking it down as well as what it contained. This seems to be the norm for liberals and is another reason why I find liberalism so distasteful. But I really do not believe your site was the reason Olberbut's ratings have gone up. (but his ratings are still dismal) I wish I was not raising a family and could afford to take the time and money to setup another site like yours. Your site was important even if it did attract undue attention to OLB, it still put out the truth, and the truth is in very short supply in the media and sadly congress.

The best humanitarian won. Watch the show you might learn something. I feel sorry for anyone who does not succeed or fulfill their goals. In your case I feel sorry for not reaching your goals (not about Olbermann but in general ... if you can understand that) but more for your orientation or lack of it toward humanity. I never heard of your .com until now. It was Olbermann who brought me to his show every night. His presentation of issues as they truly occur, his humanity, his caring, his intellect, his humor, and his ability to laugh off those who do not in anyway want to grow in intelligence or awareness. May you be granted the ability to see the light and move toward it. I guess people who care can win even in this pathetic, unfeeling, unintelligent, right leaning political climate. Good luck to all; and, try to see the truth, lose the hate, and learn that hating only begets hating! Perhaps you should consider a new website dedicated to soldiers in the field having proper armor, leadership, and important survival necessities. Remember the returning vets too as to their proper medical and emotional treatment. Perhaps visit a vet and say THANK YOU!

... you think YOU are the reason that KO's ratings are
increasing and that YOU could have created a backlash
that would have gotten him cancelled? I'm having a
hard time deciding which is bigger: your egotism or
    your arrogance.

I'm a firm believer in vigorous debate and the clash
of ideas. I've occasionally read your reviews looking
for reasoned arguments that KO's stories were not
newsworthy or his facts were wrong. All I saw were
name-calling and snide remarks. To fight ideas, you
need ideas of your own. Case in point: the most recent
Special Comment (oh, and I can spell, too, by the
way). Your review consisted of sarcastic listing of
KO's camera shots and not one word rebutting the
    substance of KO's remarks.

I could go on, but I've wasted enough time on you
already. KO has not only outlasted you, he'll outlast
this disastrous Bush administration, hopefully along
with the rest of the country.

Rest assured your pathetic site will not be missed.

    Dear Mr. Cockx,

So, who do you support? George Bush? Dick Cheney? Alberto Gonzalez? Dick Rumsfeld? This is the most heinous, deadly, wimpiest regimes that has ever governed in any Country in the History of the World. That is no exaggeration, and is painful for me to admit, or accept. I am a proud American, but am ashamed, and frightened to death by what George "The Murderer" Bush & Co. has done to this once proud nation. Bush and Cheney need to be impeached immediately to avoid the complete and utter destruction of the world as we know it.

Are you so freakin blind you do not see what is going on in this world? Are you happy your rights are being stripped to the bone by Torture Boy Gonzalez? We, the ever powerful, almighty United States have killed over 600,000 Iraqi civilians which you never hear about on mainstream media, do you?. What can you possibly not see? I had never heard of you until a real website, Raw Story caught my eye. Anyone that would start a website against a proud American such as Mr. Olbermann, and the vast majority of the American population that feel the same way he does, has some serious issues. Me being a proud American that just begs for the truth, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, Go fuck yourself, Bob "suck my" Cox

It wasn't founded on the idea that someone would get struck by a divine inspiration and know everything, right from wrong. The reason you failed is because the truth will out. Olbermann tells it like it is, I suppose you'd rather ingest the propaganda and lies that FauxNews dishes out. Whatever. Subject: The Case For Impeachment

The people of this great nation deserve a government that promotes our interests and is accountable to our laws. Yet Congress and the Bush administration have consistently evinced a deliberate, flagrant, arrogant disrespect for the law and the common good. Rather than pursuing policies that benefit the American people and further the cause of justice and peace, many of our nation's political leaders have betrayed a breathtaking dedication to a culture of corruption that encourages blatant dishonesty and willful disregard of US and international law. We are here today to raise our voices out of deep concern for our nation â€" and for our world.
That's what true patriots do. Patriots speak up when their nation is suffering tragically from corrupt, incompetent, destructive leadership. Patriots demand that their leaders be held accountable to the law and to the electorate. Patriots call on their elected representatives to impeach their president if he abrogates his responsibilities, violates the law, or evinces a cruel disregard for basic principles of human dignity, in violation of international treaty obligations.
Impeachment of the President of the United States is not to be undertaken, as in the case of Andrew Johnson, simply because of partisan disagreements regarding policies or presidential appointments, or, as in the case of Bill Clinton, because of a partisan desire to exploit a personal violation of the law not involving grave breaches of official responsibilities or serious abuses of power. However, impeachment and removal from office, a vital protection against evisceration of the balance of power among the three branches of government and against betrayals of trust and abuses of power injurious to our nation, should be pursued when, as in the case of George W. Bush, a president misleads Congress and the American people in taking our nation to war; authorizes and supports the kidnapping, incarceration without charge, and torture of human beings; demonstrates utter contempt for the rule of law; and blatantly violates fundamental constitutional protections intended to safeguard individuals against governmental abuse.
Many nations throughout history have been ruled by corrupt, despotic, dishonest leaders. To some, this is simply the way of a world in which, as expressed by the ancient Greek historian Thucydides, "the strong do what they will, and the weak do what they must."
Our nation, however, has prided itself since its founding in fighting against, and distinguishing ourselves from, the sort of tyranny, cruel immorality, and disdain for the rule of law exemplified by George W. Bush. Our nation's moral standing in the world, our nation's principled commitment to basic freedoms and individual rights, our nation's essential democracy â€" all now depend upon a conscientious, non-partisan determination that our representatives in Congress will, with integrity and without partisan bias, make it clear that a president will not be permitted to hold the office he has abused by egregiously violating the trust, the laws, and the essential principles upon which our country was founded and our Constitution was based.
Anything less than full accountability through the impeachment process betrays our history, our principles, and our notion of what it means to be an American. Anything less betrays the sacrifices so many brave men and women have made to secure freedom and the rule of law in our nation and around the world. If Congress continues its pattern of timid inaction and fails to impeach the president, future generations of Americans will have cause to fear the rise of another corrupt president who will find encouragement from President Bush's legacy of lawless, authoritarian governance and flagrant fraudâ€"and who, as in the case of President Bush, at least so far, will not be held to account.
Consider the corruption and dishonesty that have led our nation into an unnecessary war, based upon false justifications. Consider the lies that have led to the deaths of over 650,000 people, with many more having been seriously maimed, brain damaged, or rendered mentally ill. As a result of this war, our nation's reputation throughout much of the world has been destroyed. We have many more enemies bent on our destruction than before our invasion of Iraq. And the hatred toward us has grown to the point that it will take many years, perhaps generations, to overcome the loathing created by our invasion and occupation of a Muslim country.
The invasion and occupation of Iraq has been tragic at every level. More than three thousand American lives have been taken; tens of thousands of US servicemen and servicewomen have suffered serious injuries; hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis have been killed and maimed; many billions of dollars have been wasted; our country is viewed throughout much of the world as a rogue nation that ignores with impunity international law and basic principles of decency; and the future safety and security of our children and grandchildren have been placed at great risk because of the increasing hatred and resentment toward our country in much of the Muslim world arising from what is reasonably perceived as an occupation of a Muslim nation.
Our nation was led into this tragedy through dishonesty â€" either explicit lies or by means of withholding vital information â€" by President Bush and members of his administration. A few examples make clear the astounding violations of trust and abuses of power by President Bush, each of them meriting impeachment and removal from office.
On September 7, 2002, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bush met with members of the press at Camp David. President Bush referred to a "new" report from the International Atomic Energy Agencyâ€"the IAEAâ€"allegedly stating, according to President Bush, that Iraq was "six months away" from building a nuclear weapon. "I don't know what more evidence we need," stated the President.
He was lying. There was no such report. In fact, numerous IAEA reports consistently denied any indication that Iraq had any nuclear capability, and the IAEA's chief spokesperson stated that no such report had been issued by the IAEA.
President Bush further betrayed the tremendous trust bestowed upon him after the events of September 11, 2001 by instilling in many of us the fear that Saddam Hussein was seeking to purchase nuclear materials from an African nation. In fact, much of the US intelligence community disagreed. Just as an issuer of stock defrauds investors by withholding material information about a corporation, so too did President Bush defraud our Congress, our country, and much of the international community by failing to disclose information that was provided to him and which was directly contrary to his representations about Hussein's supposed efforts to build nuclear weapons.
In his January 28, 2003, State of the Union message, President Bush stated: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." He obviously limited his statement to what "the British government" supposedly had learned because he knew, but did not disclose, that our own intelligence services disagreed with the statement.
In an October 2002 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), presented at a White House background briefing on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, "Key Judgments" included an assessment "that Saddam does not yet have nuclear weapons or sufficient material to make any." President Bush failed to disclose that assessment to Congress and the American people. To make matters worse, he did not disclose the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Researchâ€"known as INRâ€"conclusion in the October 2002 National Intelligence Estimate, that "the claims of Iraqi pursuit of natural uranium in Africa are, in INR's assessment, highly dubious."
The failure by President Bush to disclose that conclusion to Congress and to the American people rendered his statement about Hussein seeking to purchase uranium from an African country fraudulently misleading. That is clearly an impeachable offense.
The fraud about Hussein building up a nuclear capability did not stop with the phony Niger story. During September 2002, Condoleezza Rice and President Bush represented to the public that Hussein was purchasing aluminum tubes to enrich uranium for a nuclear weapon. The next month, a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) was delivered to the President. That document virtually screams out the view of various intelligence agencies that the tubes were of no use in a nuclear program. That did not stop President Bush, however, from stating in a major speech the next month that "Iraq has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes and other equipment needed for gas centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons."
In a January 9, 2003 report to the UN Security Council, the IAEA reported that the aluminum tubes were not directly suitable for the manufacture of centrifuges. Again, not allowing the findings of the IAEA or of various US intelligence agencies to get in the way of his fraud upon Congress and the American people, President Bush outrageously represented in his State of the Union Message on January 28, 2003 that "Our intelligence sources tell us that [Hussein] has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production." No greater cause for impeachment can be imagined than misleading our Congress and misleading the American people about whether we are facing a nuclear threat while leading our nation to a tragic, illegal war of aggression.
The fraud was dramatically compounded when a so-called summary of the NIE was distributed to Congress, stating, falsely, that: "All intelligence experts agree that Iraq is seeking nuclear weapons and that these tubes could be used in a centrifuge enrichment program." The DOE and INR dissents, which expressed the accurate situation, were omitted. That omission rendered the representation to Congress, and to the public, false and misleading â€" a fraud clearly meriting impeachment and removal from office.
The tragic, bloody invasion and occupation of Iraq, by order of President Bush, is a clearly impeachable offense, violating the UN Charter, the Kellogg- Briand Pact, and the Nuremberg Tribunal Pact. All of these agreements are international treaties that the US has signed. Under Article VI of the Constitution, international treaties are, along with the Constitution, the "supreme law of the land." In carrying out the invasion and occupation of Iraq, President Bush violated not only numerous international conventions, but also US domestic law.
If there is any hope for the United Nations and international law to further the cause of peace, the provisions of the UN Charter prohibiting wars of aggression must be honored. To permit President Bush to be unaccountable for his contemptuous disregard of the UN Charter would not only undermine the rule of law, but would set a disastrous precedent destroying the very essence of the UN Charter â€" to provide for the peaceful resolution of disputes between nations.
In addition to the treaty obligations of the US under the UN Charter, the Nuremberg Tribunal Charter, to which the US committed itself, provides that the "planning, preparation, initiation or waging of a war of aggression or a war in violation of international treaties" is a crime against peace punishable under international law. In short, the invasion and occupation of Iraq, a war against a nation posing no imminent threat to the United States, was and continues to be a crime under the Nuremberg Charter.
To describe President Bush as a war criminal is not hyperbolic. He has blatantly violated every relevant treaty and constitutional provision in leading the US to a so-called "pre-emptive" war against Iraq, without any justification in law or in fact. He must be held accountable, through impeachment and removal from office, or the many violated treaties and constitutional provisions are nothing more than paper and pretense.
Following September 11, 2001, President Bush illegally authorized the warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, in clear violation of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution and in direct violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. After engaging in the practice for more than two years, President Bush misled the public by stating that "any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires â€" a wiretap requires a court order." It was not until a New York Times reporter broke the story in December 2005, that Bush admitted he had authorized warrantless wiretapping through the National Security Agency. He also claimed, in complete disregard of the US Constitution and relevant domestic law, that what he was doing was legal. Last August, a U.S. District Court judge declared that Bush has violated the First Amendment, noting, "It was never the intent of the framers to give the president such unfettered control, particularly where his actions blatantly disregard the parameters clearly enumerated in the Bill of Rights." A judge on the FISA panel even quit in protest of the Bush administration's outrageous violations of the law.
Impeachment and removal from office is the only appropriate remedy for a President who asserts such abusive, authoritarian power, in contravention of fundamental rights and liberties embodied in the US Constitution. It is the only means by which we can make it clear in the future that no President can so casually override our precious freedoms.
President Bush has also tremendously undermined the moral standing of the United States by allowing the CIA to kidnap people in other countries, incarcerate them without charges, and torture them. His shameful dereliction of duty in this regard is a blight on our nation's honor that can be remedied only by impeachment.
Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen, was deported to Syria from JFK Airport. Once in Syria, he was beaten with electrical cables for two weeks, then imprisoned in an underground cell for the better part of a year.
Muslim cleric Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr was kidnapped in Milan, Italy, by US and Italian intelligence agents and sent to Egypt, where he was tortured during his four-year detention.
Khaled El-Masri, a German citizen, was kidnapped by CIA agents and flown to a secret prison in Afghanistan, where he was tortured during his five months in prison there. Apparently after it was discovered he was not who his captors thought he was, he was taken to Albania and left in a forest. To this day, he has no idea why he was kidnapped, imprisoned, and tortured.
Those are among approximately 150 foreign nationals who have been victims of "extraordinary rendition." Under this CIA program, intelligence agents kidnap people and send them to secret sites abroad for interrogation. Numerous people detained under this program have experienced severe physical and psychological torture, and inhumane and humiliating treatment. We are left to ask: What has our great nation become when our president orders and condones such atrocities?
The practice of sending a person to a country where there are substantial grounds for believing he or she will be tortured is clearly prohibited by the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment, which, as an international treaty to which the US is a party, is the "supreme law of the land." A separate federal statute also prohibits the practice. The CIA's role in kidnapping and imprisoning people without charges in countries infamous for torturing detainees, such as Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jordan, and Uzbekistan, constitutes a clear violation of US and international law.
Bush administration policies and statements stripping detainees of basic protections under international law have led to the torture and murder of prisoners, many of whom have never been charged with any crime. Consider the case of Abed Hamed Mowhoush.
Mowhoush turned himself over to US forces in Iraq in November 2003. Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer, who did not receive anything other than "sparse" guidelines about how to conduct prisoner interrogations, received a captain's memo saying there were no specific rules of engagement for interrogations in Iraq. Captured detainees were considered "unprivileged combatants," a status the Bush Administration had suggested meant detainees were not to be afforded the protections of the Geneva Conventions. With little guidance and the sense that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to Mowhoush, Welshofer called in a team that beat Mowhoush with sledgehammer handles. Later, Mowhoush's hands were bound, he was struck repeatedly in the painful spot near the humerus, and was doused with water. Finally, Welshofer shoved Mowhoush, who was wrapped with electrical cord, head-first into a sleeping bag. Welshofer sat on Mowhoush's chest and blocked his nose and mouth. Mowhoush, whose autopsy revealed "massive" bruising and five broken ribs, died of asphyxia due to smothering and chest compression.
The torture and killing of Mowhoush is only one of dozens of cases of murder â€" and hundreds of cases of cruel torture â€" at the hands of US personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo. Given the scale and moral depravity of these circumstances, Congress must investigate the extent to which President Bush has been directly involved in orchestrating the unconscionable treatment of foreign nationals detained by US personnel as part of the "war on terror" or the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
While we urgently need to know the precise extent to which President Bush directed US military personnel to torture detainees and prisoners of war, we already know the President has utterly abrogated his duty to ensure the laws of the United States are carried out. Under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, the president must "take care that the laws be faithfully executed." With respect to the treaties and other laws prohibiting torture and other mistreatment of detainees, President Bush has utterly failed to meet his constitutional duty. President Bush even added a signing statement to the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 that states, contrary to the separation of powers so crucial to our constitutional system of government, that he has the sole authority to interpret and enforce the act. For his gross dereliction of duty in not ensuring the faithful execution of US law, President Bush should be impeached and removed from office.
In addition, under the Nuremberg principle of "command responsibility," President Bush's failure to stop and punish atrocities renders him culpable for them. For that, he should be held accountable through impeachment and removal from office. The Nuremberg principles are not to be applied solely to the vanquished. They are to be given effect as to all who subscribed to them, including the United States.
Sexual humiliations, incarceration for years without charges being brought, lit cigarettes put out in detainees' ears, inmates hanging by their arms, brutal beatings, attacks by unmuzzled dogs, false executions, sensory deprivations, psychological torture, waterboarding, dozens of killings, and other forms of heinous torture of human beingsâ€"if these actsâ€"consonant with Bush administration policy yet in violation of numerous treaty obligations and US domestic lawâ€"are not deserving of impeachment and removal from office, nothing ever would be.
The lies and the callous immorality of President Bush, and the outrages on human dignity he has perpetrated or countenanced, are a disgrace to our great nation. The President has weakened our country and sullied our reputation around the world. The time is long past due for the American people to stand up and speak out against this disastrous presidency and the Congress that refuses to hold it accountable. We are here today to say, "No more!"
    No more Iraq war.
No more God-is-on-our-side religious nonsense to justify this immoral, illegal war.
No more torture of human beings.
No more denial of the right of habeas corpus.
No more kidnapping of people and sending them off to secret prisons in nations where they will be tortured.
No more glorification of torture by the entertainment industry.
No more centrally-owned, hysteria-driven, corporate news media complicit in selling the Bush administration's lies to the American people.
No more unconstitutional warrantless wiretapping of American citizens.
No more manipulation of national intelligence for political purposes.
No more manipulation of our news media with false propaganda.
No more authoritarian assertions of power by the president.
No more silence by the American people.
This is a new day. We can unify in our insistence upon the truth, upon peace-making, upon more humane treatment of our brothers and sisters around the world.
We will continue to call for the impeachment of President Bush, a most appropriate response to his blatant abuses of power. We will continue to resist the lies, the deception, the outrages. We will insist that peace be pursued, and that, as a nation, we help those in need. Let us join together to break the cycle of hatred, of intolerance, of violence. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
We urge Congress, be silent no more.
We urge all Americans, regardless of party, be silent no more.
Let impeachment be the first step toward national reconciliation â€" and toward penance for the outrages committed in our nation's name.

    Four More Years!

After making the painful decision to shut down OlbermannWatch, we gathered the entire OlbyWatch team for a post-mortem off-site at The Greenbriar a fabulous five-star resort nestled in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. Amidst much laughter and tears, we spent the weekend de-constructing what went wrong in our quest to end Keith's career and what we might have done differently. It wasn't until Monday morning, when we returned to our now near-vacant Olbermann Watch offices that we learned the full extent of the rejoicing among the blue blogs at the demise of Olbermann Watch.

In reviewing the intentional misinformation, misrepresentations, vitriol and other negatives being written on numerous anti-OlbermannWatch blogs and by anti-OlbermannWatch bloggers we were astounded but frankly not surprised. By the time lunch rolled around we were beginning to have second thoughts. Clearly, if the OlbyLoons were THAT excited about our decision to close Olbermann Watch we must have been doing something right. There were whispers among the staff that maybe, just maybe, we had been a bit too hasty.

The words of one loyal Olbermann Watch reader rang in our ears

"Are you kidding me??!! How can you close now? He's NOT letting up! You're the most and best experienced at giving K.O. to KO! We need our best troopers on this mission! Get your butts back in those chairs and slam those keypads! Do we have to Patton-slap you back to the front???!! "

The more we thought about it the more realized this clear-thinking reader was right. Now is when our country needs us most. If Olbermann Watch was not going to speak to truth to Olbermann, who would? The whispered question "four more years?" became an affirmation and then a rhythmic chant. Like a sleeper awakening from a deep dream we saw our mission and sailed into it. Archives, packed up in boxes and sent to the warehouse, retrieved, RAM memory upgraded on now dusty CPUs and pencils sharpened. Recommitted to our vital mission to expose the heinous malfeasance of Keith Olbermann and his sordid staff from the Newshole.

So tonight, we give you our loyal readers this solemn pledge.

This is what we are going to try to do. It is the resolve of the entire staff of Olbermann Watch-every man of them. That is the will of all clear-thinking Olbermann Watch readers and the nation.

Olbermann Watch and its loyal readers, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their right to bring truth and light to the words and deeds of Keith Olbermann, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

Even though large tracts of the blue blogs and many old and famous newspapers have fallen or may fall into the grip of Olbermania and all the odious apparatus of the dreaded liberal media, we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in the blogosphere, we shall fight on the RSS feeds and in podcasts, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the ether, we shall defend our blog, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight in the comment sections, we shall fight on the left-wing internet forums, we shall fight in the discussion groups and in the streets, we shall fight in the A-List blogs; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this blog or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then fellow bloggers beyond the seas, armed and guarded by truth and justice, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the uber-bloggers, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the this vital community of Olbermann Watch readers.

SPECIAL ALERT: Has the time come to shut down Olbermann Watch?

    ***SPECIAL ALERT***

With the recent announcement that NBC Universal has signed Keith Olbermann to a new multi-million dollar, multi-year contract, the time has come to consider whether Olbermann Watch continues to serve a valuable role as a watchdog site. We may have to consider that as the most prominent and most important Keith Olbermann web site in the world, we have actually helped Keith by raising awareness of Countdown and keeping Keith's name in the public eye.

Keith's current contract expires on March 1, 2007.

I would ask all clear-thinking readers to consider the matter between now and then and take a moment to register your opinion in the new OlbermannWatch Poll posted in the right rail. During this difficult time, I would ask that the OlbyLoons please refrain from commenting on this post or spoofing the polling data so we can come to an accurate understanding of the views of our loyal supporters.

Answer to previous OlbermannWatch Poll: How much is Keith Olbermann worth to MSNBC?

    7,322 answers have been submitted.

$4 million a year sounds about right 16% (1218 votes)
$1 million a year, his current contract, was fair 2% (177 votes)
Keith is priceless, give him whatever he wants 51% (3769 votes)
Keith is worthless, fire him 29% (2158 votes)

The correct answer is Keith is worthless and should have been fired.

    WOW Losing Steam

After a promising start, the most important blog in the world - the one dedicated to ME!!! - has posted just once in the past 10 days. Sadly, I discovered why. The blog has been revealed as yet another pathetic attempt by the old "Gal Pals" clique to continue their long-standing campaign to silence OlbermannWatch. Longtime readers will recall that the "Gal Pals" are a group of frustrated spinsters obsessed with imagining that Keith Olbermann is expressing his love for them by wearing different color ties and blinking in Morse code before going to commercial break. Before OlbyWatch was even launched they attempted to organize a campaign at Democratic Underground, Air America Radio and elsewhere to flood OlbyWatch with troll comments and vile personal comments about me any my family. As you can see, going on year three, their campaign has worked wonders. Olbermann Watch is the number one Keith Olbermann blog in the world and our traffic is up 4,542% since we first launched the site in November 2004.

Thanks girls! Keep up the good work!

WOW - the Most Important Blog EVER!!!

It's about time! Finally, an OlbyLoon has come to see the importance of a blog dedicated to ME and nothing but ME (OK, he also mentions J$ too, darnit) ! ! ! Actually this is the second such blog but imitation if the sincerest form of flattery.

Be sure and check out the new Watching Olbermann Watch blog where you will find KO's new right-hand man (or woman), Lieutenant OlbyLoon, Jr. keeping watch on the man who is...

...widely recognized as running one of the most virulently right-wing presences on the internet

He is looking for dirt on either me or KarmaBites1 (apparently in OlbyLoonLand all KO Critics are blogging from under the same "grassy knoll") so me sure to drop Lt. OlbyLoon a message at watchingolbermannwatch@gmail.com.

    Olbermann Watch FAQ

A reader pointed out that we ought to have an FAQ so that when new OlbyLoons show up on this site we can point them to the FAQ to get replies to the shopworn questions they typically ask after first arriving at this site. I am adding a link to this post at the top of the home page and will update it and modify as I build up the FAQ. Add any suggested questions in the comments section.

Here is where we stand now:

    A. Somewhat, but not much.

    Q. When is Keith Olbermann's contract with MSNBC up?
    A. March 1st, 2007.

    Q. What's the deal with the countdown clock?
    A. We have a countdown clock until the big day when Keith's contract expires on the home page.

    Q. When did Countdown first air?
    A. We weren't really paying attention.

    A. Last time we checked. The rankings change all the time but we have been in the Top 10 for the past year, have been the top non-MSNBC blog during that time as well. More recently we jumped ahead ahead of Olbermann's own "bloggerman.com" site. We seem to go back and forth with Keith's Wikipedia entry and we are still well behind Keith's bio on MSNBC.com and the Countdown home page on MSNBC.com. However, those are web pages not entire sites. So whether we are #3 or #4 or #5 on any given day, we are definitely the #1 site and the #1 blog. We are also well ahead of all the KO fans sites and forums.

Someday soom we hope to move to a bigger server and get some better software (you can advertise on our site if you really care!)

    Q. How come all you do is write negatively about Keith?
    A. Because after years of asking, we have not found a single person willing to write postively about Keith.

    Q. What's the deal with Olby and 22-year old girls?
    A. No comment.

    A. Probably.

Tech Issue: No More HTML in Comments

A brief note on HTML in comments and the display of images from other sites...

I originally enable HTML in comments so folks could link to a site they might reference in a comment. I have now disabled this feature because what started out as a sometimes amusing use of images became a bit of flood and became both boring and gross. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your POV), the only way to do this is to uncheck a box in the configuration for the site and rebuilding the site. Having done so I now see that ALL the html code in all the comments has been disables so none of the images contained in past comments is available. C'est la vie.

For those who expressed their dismay about the images being added to the site you might be happy to know that whatever effort those folks went to in order to post images is now wasted effort - they are all gone.

KO goes of deep end over "Smear Merchant" critique

J$ has the video of O'Reilly's "subtle" shot at Olbermann. He goes on to make my point:

O'REILLY: Hold it. But it goes further than that. They mean nothing. They're smear merchants, and they always get theirs. But there's a powerful corporation behind them. And it's a corporation that allows its airways, paid for by all of us, to be abused.

The Olbershphere weighs in on BOR and KO's reax:

Media Matters - BOR Attacks KO
Relevant Torture - Bill-O and Geraldo Rivera's Moustache digress in their discussion of Mel Gibson so Bill can get a few things off his mind
ICN - “If mentioning Olbermann by name gives him more publicity then doesn’t talking about not mentioning him by name do the same thing?
TVN - Olbermann reacts to O'Reilly
    Newshounds - Olbermann fires back
Crooks and Liars - has the KO video.

Ed. note: Olbermann Watch strikes again - KO used the line "like shooting fish in a barrel" parroting a line used on Olbermann Watch just a few days ago. Keeping reading us Keith!

    OlbyWatch Housekeeping

As an anti-spammer measure, I went back and closed all the comments up until June 30th. If I accidently closed an actively commented upon post please send me an email.

I added a promising new site to the blogroll: Keith Olbermann is Evil

Another reminder that the best way to read OlbermannWatch is by subscribing via RSS. You get both the main blog posts and the "mini-blog" posts from Deli.cio.us. If you have questions about using RSS drop me a line. If you just can't bring yourself to try it (trust me you will like it) then make sure to check the mini-blog whenever you visit OlbermannWatch to get the complete picture of what is going in the Olbersphere.

PS, "Olbersphere" is a great term I first read over at KeithOlbermann.org. h/t to Salome. Who says you can't learning something useful on an OlbyLoon site.

    BloggerCon: I'm in San Francisco

I am at CNET HQ in San Francisco for Dave Winer's BloggerCon IV and then heading down to Monterrey for a long weekend to celebrate my 20th wedding anniversary. I will try to check in from time to time but, in the meantime, try and play nice while I am traveling.
